APSU BaseballTuscon, AZ – Following a sophomore campaign that saw him tie the Austin Peay State University (APSU) home run mark, junior outfielder Parker Phillips has been tapped as a First Team Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Monday.

With his first team selection, Phillips becomes the fourth Govs player to earn preseason All-America honors since 2005. He is the first Governors player known to receive first-team preseason honors and the first to earn any preseason national recognition since utility man Alex Robles earned second-team honors from Collegiate Baseball in 2015.

Phillips, of Collierville, Tennessee, rapped 19 home runs during the 2018 baseball campaign, tying the Austin Peay record set by Nate Manning in 1996. He also became the fifth Governors hitter to hit 10 or more home runs twice in their career and enters the 2019 season with 31 career homers, seven shy of breaking the APSU career record set by Lance Wampler (37 HR, 1997-2000).

While Phillips’ prodigious home run totals grab all the attention, he compiled an impressive season elsewhere. His .667 slugging percentage led the Ohio Valley Conference and ranked 19th nationally, he also had 62 RBI (36th in Division I) and was hit by a pitch 15 times (64th).

But Ohio Valley Conference foes have even more to be concerned about as Phillips did his greatest damage in league play last season. His .943 slugging percentage led all OVC hitters by 171 points thanks to his 17 homers in league action. Parker also posted a .381 batting average that was 10th in the league.

Austin Peay opens its 2019 regular season schedule, February 15th, when it hosts a three-game series against Kentucky
