APSU Men's BasketballClarksville, TN – The easy part is over—now, Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s basketball team embarks upon the grueling Ohio Valley Conference slate, beginning Thursday night, January 3rd, 2019 against Eastern Kentucky in the Dunn Center. Tip off is at 8:00pm.

The Govs have not lost to the Colonels in the Dunn Center since the 2016 season but will also be making just their fourth appearance on their home court this season.

They’ll open the OVC schedule at home for the fourth straight season and the ninth time since the turn of the century.

As conference play gets underway, the Govs—picked fourth in the preseason by the conference coaches and SID’s—will take on an Eastern Kentucky outfit picked sixth in the preseason, but which has not made an appearance in the OVC Tournament since 2015.

About the Eastern Kentucky Colonels

Eastern Kentucky just broke its single-game scoring record with 145 points in its last contest–granted, it was against Brescia out of the NAIA, but still. That’s a lot of points against anyone.

Three-time All-OVC standout Nick Mayo has been the fulcrum around which the Colonels rotate since arriving on campus in 2015; he’s turned up the volume even more as a senior, with career-highs in scoring (23.3 ppg), rebounding (8.6 rpg) and free-throw shooting (90.0 percent) as he pushes for another All-OVC finish.

In his career against the Govs, the Maine native is averaging 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 1.3 steals and 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the floor in three contests.

Last Time Out Against Eastern Kentucky

Six of the nine Govs active for the game scored in double figures as Austin Peay fended off a late Eastern Kentucky charge in a 90-84 win in the Dunn Center, January 25th, 2018.

Then-freshman Terry Taylor scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to aid the effort, and Austin Peay’s 15-of-16 showing at the free-throw line during the second half helped ward off any hopes the Colonels harbored for a comeback.

Keep An Eye On

A win would give the Govs three straight victories against the Colonels for the first time since 2010-11.

After a 42-34 rebounding edge against Arkansas, the Govs are at plus-55 rebounding margin over the last six games, an average of plus-9.2 per contest. That’s helped Austin Peay to a 13.2-to-6.2 ppg edge in second-chance points during that span.

A victory would make the Govs 4-0 to start the home schedule for the first time since 2005-06.

Senior Zach Glotta needs seven three-pointers to break into the career top-10 as a Gov.

Nine Governors have earned starts in 2018-19, the sixth-highest total across Division I.
