APSU Women's BasketballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s basketball team awakens from its Christmas break to open Ohio Valley Conference play by hosting Eastern Kentucky, 5:30pm, Thursday, January 3rd, 2019.

The Governors (5-6) have not played since December 18th, where they narrowly fell to Evansville on the road.

The loss meant the Govs stayed winless on the road, but they sport a 5-1 record at home in the Dunn Center while the Colonels (2-9) have also not won away from home this season.

The Govs did a good job defensively against Evansville, but simply went cold at the wrong time. Myah LeFlore came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points, but the Govs could not get over the hump despite leading for portions of the second half.

The Govs were missing their main two post players, however, with leading scorer and rebounder Arielle Gonzalez-Varner missing due to injury and Kelen Kenol being very limited with an injury of her own.

The Govs have played Eastern Kentucky twice in their last four OVC openers, winning both by double digits. Overall, the Govs are 6-4 in their last ten OVC home openers, their last win coming against the Colonels in the 2015-16 season.

About the Eastern Kentucky Colonels

The Colonels had a rough time during their non-conference schedule, losing their first six games by double digits. The Colonels have rebounded, winning two of their last four, but both wins came against non-Division I programs.

The Colonels are not a great shooting team in any facet of the game, but have defended rather well. They hold their opponents to under 30 percent from the three-point line and only give up 67.7 points per game.

Despite the Colonels struggling shooting as a team, their two leading scorers are both shooting over 40 percent from the field. Abby Wright averages 12.7 points a game and leads the Colonels in three-point shot attempts while Shay Solomon averages 10.7 points a game as the leading inside presence for EKU as she also leads the team in rebounding.

The Govs trail in the all-time series, 32-47, but defeated the Colonels handily, 59-45, last season in the Dunn Center. Keisha Gregory also went six-for-six from the free throw line while grabbing eight rebounds in last year’s meeting.
