Clarksville's Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – Skeletons, vintage rabbits, and ceramic cats are but a few of the quirky objects found in the Customs House Museum’s Crouch Gallery. Matthew Deric Gore’s exhibition, Setting the Stage, brings to life trinkets and flowers within moody, dark backgrounds of shadowed wallpapers.

Strange pairings make for interesting narratives for the viewer’s imagination in Gore’s realistic style of painting.

A native of Nashville, Matthew Deric Gore trained as a graphic designer and illustrator, and considers himself to be self-taught in the craft of oil painting.

He combines the precision and drama of the European Old Masters with the humor of cartoonist Charles Addams and Edward Gorey to create the stories in his work. He builds his worlds using an ever-expanding cast of characters made up of figurines, dolls, toys, and antiques.

He creates his scenes using a “stream of consciousness” technique. Various objects will trigger associations with other objects. Once ideas begin to form, Gore will guide those concepts to formalize relationships between shapes, positive and negative space, and color. He pays close attention to the use of tonality.

Through careful arrangements of tone, he can construct the illusion of depth and reality. The Nashville artist studied at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA, and the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA.

His mixed media works have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and can be found in many corporate and private collections including Yale University Children’s Hospital, Marriott Corporation, University of Virginia Children’s Hospital, Warner Bros., Nashville Chamber Orchestra, University of Chicago, and Suite 28 Records.

The artist will be presenting a gallery talk in the museum on Saturday, February 9th, at 10:30am. This event is part of the Museum’s Art 4 Us programming, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts grant.

Setting the Stage will be on display through March 3rd.
