APSU Softball begins Spring Practice

APSU SoftballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball team began its preparations for the 2019 regular season, Monday, January 15th at Joe and Cathi Maynard Softball Stadium-Cheryl Holt Field, with its first official team practice.

The Governors enter their first season under the guidance of head coach Kassie Stanfill and returning 18 letter-winners from its program record-setting 39-win squad that finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference’s regular-season standings, third in the conference’s post-season tournament and appeared in the program’s first-ever post-conference tournament event — the National Invitational Softball Championship.

Among its 18 returning players are six seniors, led by the defending OVC Pitcher of the Year Morgan Rackel (22-7, 1.41 ERA, 204 K’s) and First-Team All-OVC Third Baseman Danielle Liermann (.343, 15 HR, 51 RBI). Sophomore outfielder Bailey Shorter (.319. 5 HR, 25 RBI) returns after being named the OVC’s Freshman of the Year in 2018.

Overall, the Govs roster consists of six seniors, six juniors, six sophomores and one freshman.

Austin Peay will have a demanding preseason practice schedule with just under three weeks to get ready for its season opener versus Louisiana-Monroe, Friday, February 8th at the UAB Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Govs first home games will be on March 9th, with a doubleheader against North Alabama.
