Austin Peay State University (APSU)
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University and the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts present the annual APSU GuitarFest featuring guest artist concerts and workshops.
The concerts will be held February 11th-13th at 7.30pm in the Music/Mass Communication Building’s Mabry Concert Hall and are free and open to the public.
This year’s guest artists are Duoversal (Brazilian classical / jazz guitarist Paolo Oliviera with saxophonist Alex Graham), classical guitarist Stephen Mattingly, and Australian fingerstyle guitar phenomenon Joe Robinson.
Duoversal’s concert on Monday February 11th will focus on new arrangements by Olivera of Brazilian music and jazz for solo guitar and for guitar with saxophone, including music by such luminaries Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Pat Metheny and Sting.
Australian fingerstyle virtuoso Joe Robinson performs on Tuesday February 12th. Joe was voted “Best New Talent” in the Guitar Player Readers’ Poll and in 2008, at the age of 16, was a winner in the nationally broadcast television show “Australia’s Got Talent.”
The final concert, on Wednesday February 13th, features classical guitarist Stephen Mattingly. Stephen directs the guitar program at the University of Louisville and his recital will feature music dedicated to legendary Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia by Ponce, Mompou and Turina, along with music by Gerhard, Martin and contemporary American composer Marc Satterwhite.
Oliveira will conduct a guitar workshop “Improvisation and arranging for classical guitarists” on Monday February 11th and Robinson will conduct a fingerstyle guitar workshop on Tuesday, February 12th, both at 2.00pm in the Music/Mass Communication Building’s Mabry Concert Hall.
