The Rev. Terry was a skillful preacher and founder of Tabernacle Christian School who touched generations of Clarksvillians through his ministry and his community leadership. He was well-known for his annual campaigns to keep Christ in Christmas and Easter and for his saying, “Clarksville is a great place to live.”

That simple sentence was repeated by nearly every speaker at the ceremony, and at the end of the day, was unveiled as the memorial statement on the stone monument erected to honor Pastor Terry at the entrance to McGregor Park, along Riverside Drive, one of Clarksville’s busiest thoroughfares.

The youth choir at his beloved Tabernacle Christian School opened the ceremony with a performance of one of Pastor Terry’s favorite hymns, “The Lion and the Lamb.”

Speakers — ranging from master of ceremonies Tommy Bates, president and CEO of Legends Bank; Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts; and Pastor Terry’s wife, Servella, and son, Jimmy — all spoke about how Pastor Terry had put Jesus at the center of his life, followed closely by his devotion to the community of Clarksville.

“When I go downtown, restaurants, law offices, real estate companies all have signs that say JESUS,” Jimmy Terry said. “That is unique to Clarksville, and is what my father gave us, along with his lasting message that ‘Clarksville is a great place to live.’ ”

After his death in June 2017, the Jimmy Terry Monument Committee formed. Legends Bank, where the Rev. Terry was a founding member of the bank’s Board of Directors, entered an agreement with the City and the committee to “memorialize, honor and preserve the memory of Pastor Jimmy Terry for future generations.”

Charlie Koon, then-Chamber of Commerce President, chaired the committee; Legends Bank funded the project; and the City contracted with B.R. Miller & Company Inc. to construct and install the 6-foot monument with limestone signage panels designed by BLF Marketing.

The City of Clarkville provided the project management and landscaping of the site and the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department will take care of the ongoing maintenance of the monument.
