APSU Softball on the road Wednesday to take on Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

APSU SoftballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) softball team will make the short 81-mile trek down Interstate 24, Wednesday, to Middle Tennessee and Blue Raider Softball Field for its first mid-week contest of the 2019 season.

The Governors (8-6) enter the tilt coming off a 3-1 weekend where they swept McNeese in a three-game series before dropping the weekend finale to Lamar.

Middle Tennessee is 7-8 this season after dropping three-of-five games this past weekend at the Madeira Beach College Invitational.

Offensively, the Govs are led by Carly Mattson, who is hitting at a .386, clip, including five doubles, two home runs and a team-leading 14 RBIs, followed by Kelsey Gross (.333, 1 HR, 5 RBI) and Kacy Acree (.292, 2 HR, 12 RBI).

The APSU pitching staff is led by current Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week Morgan Rackel, who enters the game with a 5-3 win-loss mark, a 2.25 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 53 innings worked.

Kelly Mardones and Gross have also picked up wins for the Govs this season, with Mardones currently at 2-2 this season, with a 5.40 ERA and nine strikeouts, while Gross is 1-1, with two saves,  a 1.42 ERA and 12 strikeouts.

Middle Tennessee is led at the plate by Deja Portillo, who is hitting at a .444 clip, followed by Sydney Heath and her .370 batting average.

In the circle, the Blue Raiders have had six different pitchers see action this season, led by Corrina Dodd (3-2, 7.58 ERA, 14 K’s) and Kailey Ahlstrom (2-2, 3.62 ERA, 18 K’s).

Wednesday’s game will also be the only time the two teams will face each other in 2019.
