Austin Peay (11-10, 6-3 OVC) won the three-game series at Southeast Missouri, 2-1. It was the Governors first series victory in Cape Girardeau since the 2012 season.

Phillips second home run of the day – a solo home run in the ninth – was his 38th career home run. It broke the Governors career home run mark set by Lance Wampler and tied two seasons ago by Chase Hamilton.

Martinez supplied his two home runs in Austin Peay’s nine-run second inning outburst, leading off the frame with a homer to right field before capping the frame’s scoring with a two-run blast to left field. Phillips’ first home run of the day also came in the second, a grand slam that broke the game open.

Southeast Missouri (13-11, 3-6 OVC) had plenty of opportunities throughout the game, ultimately leaving 10 men on base. The Redhawks would break through for both their runs in the fifth when four consecutive batters reached base safely with one out. Center fielder Danny Wright’s single drove in the first run and shortstop Tyler Wilber followed with an RBI double.

Austin Peay starter Brandon Vial won his second straight outing. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks through five-plus innings, striking out five. Relievers Sebastian Martinez and Brett Newberg combined for four scoreless frames to end the game.

All nine Governors starters recorded a base hit in a season-high 13-hit outing. Phillips ended the day 3-for-5 with five RBI to pace the effort while David Martinez went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Southeast Missouri starter Daniel Bergtholdt (2-3) would not make it out of the second inning and suffered the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in one-plus inning of work in which he faced nine batters.

Wilber’s 2-for-4, one RBI led the Redhawks’ six-hit offensive effort.

Moment That Mattered

Southeast Missouri nearly scored the game’s first runs after its first two batters of the game reached base. Govs starter Brandon Vial would battle back with a strike out and a line out when Redhawks first baseman Turner Fritts hit a ground ball up the middle that seemed destined to drive in a pair of runs.

But Govs shortstop Garrett Kueber raced to his left and made a diving stop behind the bag he then got to his knees and fired the ball to first base in time for an inning-ending out. Two minutes later the Govs grabbed the lead on David Martinez’ leadoff home run and 30 minutes later the Govs led 9-0.

Water Cooler Chatter

37 And 38!
What had been a tough weekend for right fielder/first baseman Parker Phillips turned on a dime in the second inning. His first hit of the series was a grand slam that turned a 3-0 APSU lead into a 7-0 advantage and was his 37th career homer, tying the program career record. Fast forward seven innings and with his last at-bat Phillips broke the record with a two-out solo home run to right.

What The Win Means

Austin Peay ends the weekend where it started – in a three-way tie for second place with Murray State and Morehead State. The Governors are one-game behind Belmont, which visits Raymond C. Hand Park for a three-game series that starts Friday.
