CTS also provides The Lift, a transit van service for disabled and elderly riders.

“I never had a bad day on the job at Clarksville Transit,” Bing said. “I’ve enjoyed leading the system, and I’ve appreciated the good people who work hard to serve our citizens. Jimmy Smith (former CTS director) was my mentor, and a great friend who prepared me for the position.”

Bing, 61, was born and raised in Beaufort, SC, and spent 22 years in the U.S. Army. He retired from Fort Campbell 1997 as a 1st Sergeant and headed straight into the driver’s seat of a CTS bus. He consistently rose through the ranks, from driver to supervisor, program specialist, operations manager, deputy director and director.

“I’m proud of our work to grow the transit system, where our focus has always been safety and serving our passengers,” Bing said. “During my time as director, we added 12 employees and four new routes, while replacing the entire fleet of vehicles, and adding a number of efficient hybrid diesel buses. Our facilities have been maintained at high standards, and employee morale has been high.”

Mayor Joe Pitts thanked Bing for all his work to grow and improve Clarksville Transit System.

“Arthur Bing has been a trusted, highly respected and effective leader of Clarksville Transit System for a long time,” Clarksville Mayor Pitts said. “We’re going to miss his steady hand and his wise counsel, but we wish him all the best as he moves into this next chapter of his life.”

Bing said he looks forward to a retirement filled with trips home to coastal South Carolina, especially during the winter months, and spending time with his 10 grandchildren; his sons, Arthur II and Robert; and his daughter, Patricia Nesbitt.

“I also have nice pontoon boat that I hope to get on the water a little more often,” he said.
