Murray, KY – A difficult second round left the Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s golf team with a lot of ground to make up at the Jan Weaver Invitational, with 18 holes remaining in the event following Friday competition.
Consistency was key for the Govs on Friday, and in that regard junior Meghann Stamps was far-and-away the best performer.
The Hendersonville Tennessee native shot match 76s for a 152, sitting just outside the top-20 in a five-way tie for 21st. She sank a team-high five birdies, doing much of her damage on par-4 holes (4.20 strokes per hole).
Senior Reagan Greene’s opening-round 73 got her off to a good start to the tournament, but the Clarksville Tennessee native struggled in the second, posting an 81. She was not alone—three of Austin Peay’s five players in the lineup shot a higher score in the second round, and four posted rounds in the 80s.
The Taylor’s both added a couple of shots to their scores in the second round. Freshman Taylor Dedmen followed a 79 with an 81, while Taylor Goodley opened with an 81 and closed with an 83. Sophomore Riley Cooper shot 85-81 to round out the lineup; she was the only Gov to improve from Round One to Round Two.
The individuals did what they needed to do in the first couple of rounds to make the lineup decisions for the upcoming Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championships more difficult for head coach Amy McCollum. Freshman Shelby Darnell’s 153 (76-77) was one shot behind Stamps for the team lead, and her 3.13 par-3 stroke average was a team-best.
Sophomore Andrea Presilla opened with a 77 and followed that with a 79, the second tournament in a row she’s opened with back-to-back rounds in the 70s. And while a couple of big numbers got the best of senior Ashton Goodley on Friday, her 24 pars were a team-high and showed her to be more than capable of getting up and down on a difficult track.
Final-round action begins at 8:30am, Saturday, with a shotgun start at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
