Clarksville, TN – I’m a type “A” driver behind the wheel of my car. Not too aggressive, but I’m an anxious sort. I don’t have time for other drivers who are not giving their total attention to the task at hand.
Distracted driving, not doing the speed limit and hanging out in the left lane are just a few of the things that drive me crazy. Luckily, my attitude behind the wheel hasn’t gotten me in any trouble, but I quickly learned that there’s no place for that attitude on the back of a motorcycle.
I’ve ridden with some VERY aggressive bikers. I’ve shown my frustration to many a truck driver. I’ve “lectured” many a driver who just won’t get off their damn phone.
You get the picture? Are you like that on your motorcycle?
Early on in my journey, I traveled to Texas to see friends. I was so pumped about it, my adrenaline was off the charts. Naturally, my emotions were peaked and every little thing would just set me off.
When I stopped for the night, I realized that all of that expended energy, both mentally and physically, just absolutely drained me. Not only that, but when we get upset, we tend to make bad decisions.
I finally came to grips with the fact that I DO NOT have any advantage on the back of my Harley. I am NOT the big kid on the block. I AM the most vulnerable of all traffic on the highway.
It doesn’t do any good to let my emotions run away from me. I should be cruising along enjoying the absolute joy of riding a motorcycle. Decisions made in haste lead to disaster.
I’ve watched other bikers go crazy on other vehicles in traffic. Running up on their bumper, flipping them off and so on. It’s none of my business how you ride, but for me, my challenge is to remain calm in all situations and just cruise through traffic unscathed and safe and sound.
I will admit it’s hard for me. I get VERY frustrated at how distracted other drivers are. They’re not paying attention and I’m offended by that, because we all depend on each other to travel safe and keep an eye out for each other.
So, let’s do our best to remain calm in a sea of choppy water out there, and enjoy the journey. Our lives depend on it.
