APSU Tennis’ Claudia Yanes Garcia earns season’s third OVC Player of the Week award

APSU Women's TennisBrentwood, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team senior Claudia Yanes Garcia won her third Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week award this season, as announced by the conference office, Wednesday.

Yanes Garcia won all four matches (two singles and two doubles) last weekend in the victories over Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville. Against EIU, Yanes Garcia teamed with her twin sister Lidia Yanes Garcia for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, before winning in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.

Yanes Garcia continued her successes against SIUE, where she and Lidia clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win, once again at the No. 2 spot. Yanes Garcia then obliterated her opponent at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, to cap off her perfect week.

Yanes Garcia has teamed with her sister to win nine straight doubles matches, tied for second in program history. They are two matches behind the record streak of Honoka Nakanishi and Tatiana Lopez, who maintain their active streak at 11 matches. Overall, Yanes Garcia is having her best doubles season to date, with a 12-4 spring record and a 6-0 OVC record.

This spring, Yanes Garcia is 16-1 in singles, winning 14 straight matches at one point, which is tied for fourth all-time in program history with Caroline Weikard and teammate Helena Kuppig, whose streak is active heading into the Murray State match.

Yanes Garcia and the Govs take on Murray State today, before hosting Belmont on Saturday.
