Montgomery County to host Plastic Free event on May 3rd

Montgomery County Government TennesseeMontgomery County, TN – Did you know that every second 160,000 plastic bags are used around the world and on average each of those bags is only used for 12 minutes. Thousands of plastic bags eventually become litter and end up in waterways.

Even properly disposed of plastic bags can be a challenge. On windy days at Bi-County Landfill on Dover Road, bags catch the wind and fly about like small kites. It takes 4 employees over 3 hours each to collect them all.

Montgomery County and the Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification Program will hold Plastic Free Event at Kroger's, Food Lion and Walmart on Friday, May 3rd.

Join Montgomery County and the Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification Program in the fight to reduce plastic bag litter in our community.

On Friday, May 3rd and again on Saturday, May 18th volunteers will be at local grocery stores distributing free reusable bags.

Along with the reusable bags, shoppers will receive a bag reminder sticker for their vehicle. The reminder stickers help you remember to bring your bags into the store; something many agree is the biggest challenge of going plastic free.

Visit us on Friday, May 3rd at:

  • Kroger (1489 Madison Street) from 9:00am to noon – Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett will be joining us at 9:00am so be sure to stop by and say “Hi”
  • Food Lion (1765 TN-48) from 9:00a. to noon
  • Walmart (1680 Fort Campbell) from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.

In addition to visiting our volunteers at local stores, you can also get involved by participating in our social media challenge.

Submit a photo using the hashtag #MoCoPlasticFree2019 showing you, your family or your friends doing one of these things: using a reusable bag, going completely bag free (think of it as the grocery juggle) or returning plastic bags to a store for recycling. Photos must be taken within Montgomery County.

All photos will be entered to win one of our great prizes including:

  • $200.00 Gift certificate provided by Furniture Connection, Inc. for use at any of its 4 Clarksville locations
  • Gift certificate for a Discover SCUBA Diving introductory class provided by Waterdogs Scuba and Safety
  • $50.00 Gift certificate provided by Appleton Harley-Davidson for their store
  • $25.00 Kroger gift card provided by Kroger
  • Bird feeder and seed provided by Montgomery County Soil Conservation District
  • And more
