Clarksville, TN – Bikers spend hundreds and THOUSANDS of dollars making sure they’re seen AND heard. We realize that it’s important to “stand tall” in traffic because, well, motorists are just TOO DAMNED DISTRACTED!. It’s a problem that I think is getting worse with no prospects of getting better.
Now, I hate to be so pessimistic, but I’ve put a lot of miles on the road over these last three and a half years, and I see a LOT of strange stuff going on behind the wheel of a car. It’s frustrating and damn right criminal!
I’ve taken all of the safety courses, I’ve bought all of the gear, and I’m as responsible as it gets, so I’ve done my part.
May is motorcycle awareness month. Like every other thing that is given its own “month” it’s an opportunity to once again try to remind those who don’t ride a motorcycle, that we’re out there and we would greatly appreciate it if you would look for us.
I’ve tried my damndest to not get so upset about distracted driving, but it’s hard.
First of all, I fail to believe that there are so many people who are stupid enough to risk their own life by being so irresponsible behind the wheel. I mean let’s face it, if you don’t give a damn about your own life while sitting behind the wheel, then you DAMN sure don’t give a hoot about me.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve seen and heard all of the “don’t drink and drive” campaigns, or the “drugs are dope” campaigns, or “buckle up for safety” ads. Where has that gotten us? Millions are killed driving drunk or impaired and there are still people who refuse to buckle up.
“It’s too uncomfortable” they say. “My seatbelt is too tight” they say. “Or, it’s just two beers, no big deal” they say.
Give me a freaking break!
Yes, I’m a little bitter, but I’ve seen the damage done by drivers who have no regard for the safety of others, especially bikers. I’ve heard the comments like, “well, you shouldn’t be riding that thing,” or “you’re gonna get killed on that thing” and people who blame bikers for their accidents.
At the end of the day, all one can do is simply ask people to be more aware that we’re out there. To look both ways, or give us a break in traffic. To take safety seriously and quit thinking “it could never happen to me.”
I’m not real confident that drivers will get over themselves and change their ways, but it’s worth a shot.
In the meantime, I’m going to have a motorcycle that lights up like a Christmas tree, and sounds like a tank rumbling down the road in hopes that motorists will see or hear me. I’m entitled to the road just like you are and I’m probably one of the most careful people out there, so, please cut us a little slack, and keep an eye out.
Now, about those grass clippings……
