City of Clarksville, Montgomery County took on Fort Campbell in Annual Tobacco Stick Softball Game

Montgomery County Government TennesseeMontgomery County, TN – Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts recently joined forces with Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett in an effort to put together a softball team made up of city and county employees who could compete with the always hard-to-beat Fort Campbell team.

The occasion was the 10th Annual Tobacco Stick Softball Game, a friendly afternoon of softball at Heritage Park that promotes more camaraderie than competition among our local government employees, and the Soldiers that serve our nation.

Melinda Shepard, Executive Director of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce commented on the origins and spirit of the annual game.

“This all started when Darrel Walker was Chairman of our Military Affairs Committee,” Shepard said. “That was back in 2004 or so. It’s just an opportunity for us to come out and enjoy a little friendly rivalry. The city and county have really come together this year and formed a great team, and of course
Fort Campbell always has a great team.”

The Fort Campbell team was led this year by CSM Bryan Barker and Maj. Gen. Brian Winski, and as always they brought speed and power to the field.

“The Chamber used to hold what we called, Warrior Week, each year,” Shepard said. “We used to put so much into that one week, now we are trying to spread those activities out, and do something quarterly. That way, it’s not so taxing on Fort Campbell and all the volunteers.”

The Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee holds several events throughout the year to recognize, honor and thank all our military families. Events like the Godfather Golf Tournament, Broomball, an ice hockey event at Downtown Commons, and the recent Fun Day in February, which was held at The City Forum. About 300 kids attended this year’s Fun Day event.

Coming up later in the year will be the Eternal Flame ceremony in September, and the Veterans Day Parade in November.

Mayors Pitts and Durrett were definitely relaxed and having fun at the game. Pitts spent much of his time as 3rd Base Coach. After hitting a single, Durrett came to the dugout and made some comments. “I think this is awesome,” Durrett said. “The community comes together with Fort Campbell for an afternoon of fun. There can be some competitiveness, but it’s all about having fun and supporting our military families.”

When asked about the high quality of this year’s team, Durrett pointed the finger at Pitts and laughingly said. “Mayor Pitts loaded this team with some city employees, and I’m not sure if they work a lot. But, it sure looks to me like they work-out a lot.”

Pitts responded with a smile, “It ain’t braggin’ if you’ve done it. I just want to echo Mayor Durrett’s remarks. We are proud to be out here showing our support for our military families. But, I will add, we do want to win, and this Fort Campbell team is always good.”
