Clarksville City Council elects Gary Norris for Ward 11 Council seat

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – On Thursday, June 13th, 2019, the Clarksville City Council voted for Gary Norris, a long-time resident of Clarksville who has served in several community leadership positions, to fill the vacant Ward 11 seat on the Council.

Gary Norris is congratulated by Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts on being elected Clarksville City Council Councilman for Ward 11.

The Council selected Norris from a field of five well-qualified candidates who applied and interviewed for the job at last week’s Council meeting.

The other applicants were Jimmy Brown, Joseph Mora, and Ben Moore. Mora withdrew before Thursday’s vote because of a work-related scheduling conflict.

The vacancy occurred when former Ward 11 Councilman Bill Powers, who was elected District 22 State Senator on April 23rd, resigned from the Council on May 1st.

“I want to thank the Mayor and City Council for their support in putting me on the City Council,” Norris said. “I will work hard and do my best to represent Ward 11 and entire City of Clarksville.”

Norris, 327 Partridge Court, told the Council last week that he had lived in Ward 11 for 33 years and was interested in working on improved quality of life for residents, community planning and smart growth for the City.

Norris had served as chairman of the Regional Planning Commission for eight years, chairman of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the Design Review Board. He also held board positions with the Homebuilders Association, Habitat for Humanity and at First Presbyterian Church.

The Clarksville City Charter sets out the application and voting process to fill the vacancy, which required a majority vote of the entire City Council.

Norris will serve until the next City election in November 2020. Since Powers was re-elected to a four-year term in 2018, voters in 2020 will choose a candidate to fill the seat until November 2022, for the remainder of the Ward 11 unexpired term.
