This annual golf tournament, in memory of the late Mickey Fisher, will benefit the Mickey Fisher Scholarship fund, an endowment to benefit dependents of wounded or fallen Fort Campbell soldiers with scholarships to Austin Peay State University.

There will be an awards ceremony with prizes awarded at the conclusion of each session for flights 1&2 and at the conclusion of Saturday’s play for Championship and Seniors. For golfers to participate in the Senior Division, the minimum age is 60. Lunch will be served on Saturday.

The “Big Fish” is a four-man scramble format, and everyone is invited to play. Entry forms are available at all area pro-shops.

Entry fee is $400.00 per team. If you wish to just attend the dinner and auction, tickets are $15.00 each, $25.00 per couple.

We’ve all done stupid things, and we will continue to do stupid things, because we’re human.  Our level of stupidity is only tempered with age, and wisdom, but I don’t think we ever quit doing stupid things, it’s just our nature sometimes.

Then again, some of us can’t help it.

But I digress.

Case in point:  Texting and driving.

We’ve all done it.   Texting while driving, or checking our phone with one hand on the wheel the other on Facebook.  Some of us more than others.  Our cell phones are our number 1 addiction.  We can’t go five seconds without checking our phones.  For some of us, we go into a serious case of withdrawals if we can’t find our phone, or become separated from it for a brief moment.

The cell phone causes us to be rude and obnoxious.  We talk freely in the check-out lane at the grocery store, then look at the strangers around us and wonder, “what are you looking at?”

We talk on our device in the movie theater, even though we’re asked not to, or to at least, put our phone on “silent.”

People have actually been kicked off of airplanes because they refuse to turn their cell-phone off.

Now, how stupid is that?

We sit at the intersection reading our latest Facebook update, even though the light has turned green, and everybody is waiting for us  to “move along now.”

And heaven forbid somebody would “honk” at you to let you know the light is green.  That’s usually when you show us who’s “number 1.”

Now, I’m not about to preach to you or anybody else about the obvious, but I am a little concerned about our stupidity when it comes to something I encountered the other day.

First of all, I don’t have anything against motorcycles.  I don’t own one now, but I don’t have a problem with “bikers.”   There’s nothing like getting out and enjoying a ride in the country, (if you can handle all the bugs in your teeth, that is).

Which is why I don’t understand how we accept the idea that it’s ok to “text” and drive. Why do accept this distraction, when we know that an accident can happen in the “blink of an eye.”  It’s stupid.

Case in point:  Man on Motorcycle

As I was driving up the 41-a bypass this week, I encountered a genius on his motorcycle, who blew by me, getting wedged between another car and myself just as the three lanes turned to two.   He was stuck in a line of traffic, doing the speed limit, with about 5 cars in the line.

With nowhere to go, he took this opportunity to show off his amazing, yet stupid, motorcycle skills.  He proceeded to perform a variety of “wheelies” while “runnin and gunnin” his bike at the same time.

Very impressive sir.

Then, all of sudden he slows down, causing all of us behind him to hit the brakes to avoid him.  Why?

He was checking his cell phone.

WHAT?

Yep.

There he was, head going up and down while reading his phone checking his latest updates.  Then he swerved into oncoming traffic causing the oncoming vehicle to swerve and honk it’s horn, to which he promptly gave them the “finger” (yes, while holding his cell phone).

Touch of class.

Texting and driving KILLS people.

But on a motorcycle?  Put this guy up for a Darwin Award.

As a result of this lunacy, I’ve become more of a defensive driver than ever before.  I’m extremely attentive to those around me.  I pay close attention to bikers, not because of THIS idiot, but because bikers are vulnerable and unprotected, and hard to see sometimes.

So please watch out for bikers of all shapes and sizes.   They deserve every courtesy that anyone else on the highway deserves. I just don’t have time for guys like this.

“Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

Stop looking down and keep your eyes on the road.  The rest of us are depending on you to pay attention.

Now, excuse me while I go get on my stationary bike, and pop a “wheelie.”  (I’m living on the edge baby!)

He got it naturally.

His father Mickey was a great athlete, as was his father George.

Kinda runs in the DNA, huh?

I haven’t really kept up with Ryne since he moved away, but it was good to see that he still competes, and he’s still tough to beat.

Fisher won the Tom Hoover Ozark Invitational in Poplar Bluff Missouri. One of the best golf tournament in the state. The field is mostly college golfers and ex-college golfers who come together for the weekend to see who’s still “got it.”

Fisher shot a six under par 136 to win by one shot, tapping in a birdie on the final hole of the tournament to break a log jam of six golfers who were tied for the lead at the time.

Pressure. Not a problem. Been there done that.

“It was really lightning in a bottle this weekend” he told me. “I had very low expectations for this tournament. I figured I would shoot a couple of 75′s and be done, but my putter was magical. I made everything I stood over.”

Winning golf tournaments, and sinking pressure putts is nothing new to Ryne Fisher. He won the Commanding Generals Golf Tournament at Fort Campbell when he was fifteen years old. His grand-dad, George Fisher, won the same tournament.

It’s apparently a Fisher family tradition.

A lot has been happening in Ryne Fishers’ life since college. He married his college sweetheart, Ellen, and they moved to her hometown of Kansas City. He works as a sales rep for a copier and software company, but still manages to play every chance he gets.

“I play in a few of the local tournaments here, kind of like when I was in Clarksville, but nothing real serious” he said. “My priorities have changed, but I still love the game.”

It’s hard for me to imagine Ryne Fisher playing in a golf tournament and not seeing his parents, Mickey and Mary, and his grand-dad George standing in the trees watching every shot, but life goes on.

It’s gratifying to me to see our young people grow up and become fine adults. Finding their careers, and finding their life partners, because life goes by so fast. In Ryne Fisher’s case, it’s pretty special, because I watched his dad’s career and that makes me feel old.

So we should all be proud of the accomplishments of our children. I know I am. And I know somewhere, Mickey Fisher has a big grin on his face because this weekend, his baby boy won another golf tournament.

Austin Peay golf coach Kirk Kayden has kept his team out of the hazard and in the best position to win since his arrival in 2004. He does more than just drive the van.

He became interested in coaching when he was asked to run the high school golf program at Central Columbia High School, while working as an assistant golf professional and substitute teacher. After spending a year at Central Columbia, he was selected to start a golf program at Terra Community College. In the first year of the Terra program, the team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Regional Tournament and finished the season ranked fifth nationally in Division III.

In 2001, Kayden was hired to become Penn State’s assistant golf coach by Greg Nye, the former head coach at Bowling Green who had recruited Kayden out of high school.

Good move.

Kayden was hired as the APSU men’s golf coach in July of 2004. He took over a program that had won three consecutive OVC Championships, (2001-2003). He replaced Mark LaRue who had accepted the head coaching job at Missouri.

“Ok Kirk. Good luck. Here’s the keys to the van.”

What Kayden has managed to accomplish in nine years is nothing short of spectacular.

In 2009, the Govs set a record for the lowest 18 hole team score after setting records for the 36 and 54 hole team scores in the 2006-2007 season. I remember when that happened, and interviewed Kayden at the time, and he just said, “the guys played pretty good.”

Ya think?

His golfers have earned a total of 13 All-OVC honors, including two OVC Freshman of the Year selections (Erik Barnes, and Grant Leaver), while Barnes also was named OVC Player of the Year in 2009.

Luke Sherrod was a first-team All-OVC pick and was named All-Newcomer, while Clarksville’s own Brian Balthrop and Sherrod were each named OVC All-Tournament as part of the Govs 2009 OVC title.

Which brings us to this year’s edition of the APSU golf team. While Kayden would never let on that he’s probably got one of the best squads since he’s been here, you’ve got to figure he’s a little bit “giddy” inside thinking of the possibilities.

These guys are good.

They’e got 5 wins in 9 starts. They’ve beaten programs that are nationally ranked. The collegiate golf world has taken notice of Austin Peay. When the Govs show up at a tournament, everybody knows who they are.

And here’s the kicker. This team has only one senior, Dustin Korte, and some very talented underclassmen. They lose only one member of this team to graduation. I would feel a little “giddy” too if I were Kayden.

I caught up with Coach Kayden before the team went to Missouri, where they finished second and Dustin Korte was medalist. We talked about this team, this season, and the expectations they’ve put on themselves. In his normal, not too excited sounding way, I could tell Kirk Kayden was feeling good about this team.

“These guys make my job easier” Kayden said. “With five tournament wins this year, this could be the best team I’ve ever had at Austin Peay. They’re so competitive. They not only want to beat each other, but they want to beat anybody they tee it up against” he said.

About the goals this team has set for this year;

“We’ve set our sites on winning the OVC Tournament and getting into the NCAA. It’s a goal we set at the beginning of the season. Losing the OVC the way we did last year left a bad taste in our mouth, and I think we’ve carried a chip on our shoulder all year long. I think my guys feel like they have something to prove after missing out on the NCAA last year” said Kayden.

It’s highly unlikely that Austin Peay would get an invitation to the NCAA Tournament without winning the OVC tournament, but it’s possible, based on their strength of schedule and the number of tournament wins they’ve had. They’ve beaten some highly ranked teams along the way.

“We’re kind of on the bubble” said Kayden. “We need to just take care of business, win the OVC Tournament, and assure ourselves of a trip to the NCAA. Winning the OVC Tournament is our number one goal. It’s super important” he said.

Managing so much talent isn’t easy. As a coach, you have to know your players. Put the best team on the course. It’s not always about who plays best in practice, it’s about who’s tournament tough. Who can perform under pressure. Who’s more consistent. Sometimes if a golfer doesn’t play well during qualifying, you go with him anyway, because he plays better under tournament conditions. He loves the pressure. A coach has to trust his “gut.”

Kayden knows his guys. Week after week he puts the best team on the course that will give Austin Peay the best chance to win the tournament and looking at this year’s results, I would have to say he knows what he’s doing.

And they’re not intimidated.

So my advice to the rest of the OVC is to bring your “A” game, because the guy driving our van is feeling a little “giddy.”

In a sport that generates no revenue for the University, and very few headlines unless they’re winning, being the head coach of a golf team is typically a fairly annonymous title.  Unless you’re a big fan of Austin Peay, you probably don’t even know who the mens golf coach is.

Meet Kirk Kayden.

On Monday, our sister website, www.clarksvillesportsnetwork.com, will take a look at Kirk Kayden and the APSU men’s golf team as they prepare for the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.  A team that’s won three tournaments this year, and five in the last 12 months.  A team that has talent, leadership, and a burning desire to beat anybody who wants to “tee it up.”

A team that’s not afraid of the darkest night, and still carries a chip on its shoulder from last years OVC tournament, where the golf govs came up one shot short of a title.

Kayden has been at Austin Peay for nine years, taking over a program that had won three consecutive OVC Championships (2001-2003) and has led the team to 36 program records in his time here.  Before coming to APSU, Kayden helped lead Penn State to three straight NCAA regionals, including a 15th place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2004.

When Kayden was hired to replace Mark LaRue, the reaction was pretty universal among the governor faithful.

“Really?  Penn State has a golf team?”

What he’s done since his arrival is nothing short of spectacular.  Managing egos and parents who wonder why their little “Tiger Woods” isn’t playing all the time.

Meet Hannah Lee and Steffi Heuer.

This is their story of accomplishment, sacrifice, pain, and commitment to a sport that requires intricate precision and a passion for excellence. It’s also the story of how gymnastics taught them some of life’s most important lessons.

When Hannah Lee was just four years old, she and her mother were watching gymnastics on television and Hannah pointed to the TV and said, “I want to be a balancing girl,” and from that moment, her life would change forever.

Steffi Heuer became interested at the age of 7, because, as she told her mother, “I want to do all that flipping like they do.”

Hannah is the youngest of three children of Kris and Tim Lee, a military family who retired in Clarksville.

A 2012 graduate of Clarksville High School, Hannah’s family has supported her every “flip” of the way, and like most parents, they’re extremely proud of their “balancing girl.”

“She’s been competing since she was 6 years old,” said her mother Kris. ” When we first took her to the gym, they asked her to do a cartwheel, so she did. They said they’d never seen someone that young do that. That’s when this journey began.”

“Like any parent, you want your kids to be involved in things that are positive and things they enjoy doing, whether it’s sports or anything else,” said Tim. “She was just a natural at gymnastics, so we poured our heart and soul into it for her.”

“Gymnastics is why she is such a great person today,” said Kris. “She is so much more than an athlete. Her grades are great, she’s in great shape, and she’s become a wonderful woman.”

“The discipline and commitment necessary to compete at such a high level has made her a great person,” said Tim.

Steffi’s parents, Brian and Deneen, share the same opinion of what the sport has meant to their daughter.

“We took her to some recreation classes when she was little, and it became clear at an early age that she had some talent,” said Steffi’s father, Brian. “She moved up quickly through the various levels of accomplishment. Gymnastics gave her more confidence. It brought out her personality.”

Her mother Deneen said, “She’s always been a tumbler, so it wasn’t a surprise that she would be really good at gymnastics. It was something she could be a part of. It taught her discipline and kept her focused on something positive.”

Steffi graduated from Austin Peay State University Middle College before heading to Whitewater last year.

Most of us are only familiar with the gymnastics we see during the Olympics, and are amazed at the ability of these athletes. It takes years and years of hard work, pain, frustration, and practice to become an elite gymnast, most of whom never make the national stage. The sport gets very little publicity, and the athletes and their families form bonds that last a lifetime.

“It’s a sport that requires a significant amount of passion,” said Hannah. “Four to five hours per day in the gym. You don’t have a normal life. There’s no time for boys, or social events. I have no regrets,” she said.

“I quit for three years, and looking back, I regret it,” said Steffi. “I regret quitting to be ‘normal.’ The gym is my home, it’s my family, and I missed that. The feeling you get and the rewards that come with hard work was something I missed.”

When Steffi returned to the gym, she quickly got back into competitive shape.

Hannah and Steffi both trained under the watchful eye of their coach, Larry Corrigan, who owns Clarksville Elite Gymnastics Center. Corrigan turned to gymnastics after a very stressful military career–he needed an outlet to relieve that stress.

Corrigan attended seminars, coaching clinics, and studied the sport to become a top notch instructor. He would help with summer camps, and read everything he could get his hands on to become an expert in the sport. He’s had a direct impact on the lives of hundreds of Clarksville area kids.

“Larry is part of our family,” said Hannah. “When you spend so much time at the gym, we share everything. He pushes us to be better, and encourages us when we don’t feel like practicing.”

Steffi echoed,”Larry is a special person in my life. When you spend that much time with a group of people, they become part of your family.”

“You’ve got to have the physical tools to compete in this sport,” said Corrigan. “To be a champion, you have to avoid all the distractions that come along in a young person’s life. When these athletes get to the college level, there are very few slots available, so they have to be some of the very best competitors to make the team. It’s a demanding sport with lots of injuries and very few kids make it to this level. They just get burned out, and don’t want to do it anymore.”

Oddly enough, injuries have not been that much of a problem for Hannah and Steffi, although, it was a freak accident that took Hannah out of gymnastics for a bit, and Steffi was sidelined this year with ankle injuries and couldn’t compete at the national championship.

“I was trying to adjust the vault table when it collapsed on my hand and crushed it,” said Hannah. “It caused me to miss a lot of practice while my hand healed. Pretty crazy that I wasn’t sidelined due to anything that happened while I was competing, or practicing.”

Steffi competed throughout the championship season, but was not able to participate at the national competition, which was disappointing. “I was hurt and not able to compete, but we train and compete as a team. Our coach tells us, ‘We are one,’ so I was excited for my teammates. I’ll be ready next year, and look forward to competing for another title.”

“Hannah’s number one attribute is her toughness,” said Corrigan. “I remember when she hit her head once and busted it wide open and the first thing she asked was if she could finish practice. She also busted a tooth out while performing a vault, and it was her first attempt, so naturally, missing tooth and all, she wanted to know if she would get her second vault,” Corrigan said. “She’s tough.”

“Steffi is one of the best beam kids I’ve ever coached. She’s a natural at it,” stated Corrigan.

“They have an amazing program there,”according to Corrigan. “These kids who make it this far need somewhere to go and compete, and my gym has been fortunate enough to train a number of athletes who have gone to Whitewater. Their coach, Jennifer Regan, is an amazing person.”

“When he came to visit with his daughter several years ago, Larry bought a school jacket, and I knew we had more than just a dad, we had a fan,” according to coach Regan.

Regan goes on to describe her girls from Clarksville:

“Hannah is a very talented young lady. She’s a coach’s dream. She works hard, and never complains. I don’t think she’s reached her potential. We haven’t seen the best in Hannah yet.”

“Steffi just works-works-works. She and Hannah are similar in that they have an enormous amount of talent that hasn’t been tapped.”

Coach Regan has been at Whitewater for 11 years and this is her team’s second National Championship. They’ve won three of the last four conference championships and have 19 girls on the team.

Hannah and Steffi are reaching the end of their gymnastics career. Once they graduate, their competitive days are over, but the rest of their lives are just beginning. The long hours in the gym, the sacrifices, the pain–it all pays off in the end.

And a National Championship ain’t so bad either.

The USJGT has hosted tournaments in the Middle Tennessee area for ten years, and the tour stops are exciting tournaments played on some of the best golf courses.

United States Junior Golf Tour recently held a tournament at Clarksville’s Swan Lake Golf Course.

The United States Junior golf Tour has been in operation since 2001 and more than 2500 golfers have participated in our events since the tour’s inception. Tournament participation is increasing with each event, and the tour welcomes golfers of all abilities.

Participants range from ages 8-18, and over 300 USJGT alumni have gone on to play college golf.

This comedy show, includes a one mile walk and auction, which will raise money for the Brian E. Kiley Memorial Fund to benefit his wife and step-daughter.

Following the walk, there will be a stand-up comedy show featuring many of Brian’s comic friends.  The show will be family friendly.

After the comedy show, the results of the silent auction will be announced with the highest bidders receiving their items.  Food vendors will be on hand, and face painting for the kids will be available.

The festivities get under way at 3:00pm and everyone is invited.

Clarksville, TN - A grievance filed by an employee at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Regional Planning Commission has raised safety concerns among several other employees.

John Stanley Williams filed a grievance on March 20th 2013, with Dr. David Ripple, Planning Commission Director, aimed at RPC employee, Audrea Smithson, claiming a “hostile” work environment and preferential treatment.  In his grievance, he claims that Smithson has been  treated more favorably for sick leave, and personal days that she has taken. 

Williams was reprimanded last year for submitting fraudulent expense reports from business trips he had made, and was ordered to repay the RPC $835.13 in overcharges.  He was also docked vacation days and not eligible for a pay raise during the current fiscal year.

Williams has not been available for comment as records indicate he is on vacation.

Dr. Ripple conducted an investigation, in response to the grievance, of Smithson’s payroll records, and time sheets and determined that there was an oversight by Smithson on three days, for which she did not claim annual or sick leave and was not penalized by loss in pay.  Ripple determined that Smithson would be assessed 16 hours of annual leave time on the appropriate hourly rate in effect on the three dates that were in question.  Smithson is appealing 8 of those hours.

The grievance culminates a pattern of hostility between Williams and Smithson that exploded in front of both Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan at last weeks planning commission meeting.  Williams had made some accusations during the meeting about not being involved in the 2012 budget process while Smithson was Interim Director.  Smithson denied those claims during the meeting.  Afterwards, the two got into a heated argument in the hallway of the Regional Planning Commission offices.

Sources tell Clarksville Online that both mayors expressed their displeasure over the behavior of Smithson, but made no reference to Williams.  Williams pursued Mayor Bowers after the meeting for an opportunity to tell her his story, and Dr. Ripple stepped between he and the mayor and told him it was inappropriate for him to be speaking to Bowers about internal issues.

Neither mayor has the authority to affect employment issues or personnel matters within the RPC. Only the director has that power.

Smithson tells Clarksville Online that she is very concerned about Williams.

“I am very concerned about a man who is willing to throw away his career this way, by making these accusations and admitting to keeping a diary on me.  I told Dr. Ripple about my concerns” she said.

Smithson also told Clarksville Online that she had had enough of William’s lies during last week’s meeting and lost her temper.  She doesn’t remember what was said between the two and regrets the incident.

“I’ve had enough of his lies and am not going to keep being accused of things that aren’t true. I wish the confrontation hadn’t occurred but I have had enough of him” Smithson said. “I should have known better, but enough is enough already.”

Ripple is expected to address the argument at a later date, and told Clarksville Online, “If this were any other environment other than a government office, and I behaved the way they behaved, I would have been shown the door.”

Williams can appeal Ripple’s decision to the Executive Committee if he is not satisfied with the results of the investigation.

Clarksville, TN – An employee at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Regional Planning Commission has filed a grievance claiming a “hostile” work environment.  That same employee was recently reprimanded by Planning Commission Director Dr. David Ripple, for submitting fraudulent expense reports and overcharging local, state and federal agencies for his travel expenses.

John Stanley Williams filed a grievance this week claiming that Audrea Smithson, a fellow RPC employee, has been treated more favorably as it relates to sick leave, comp time and absences from the office and he and “others” are asking for an outside/independent agency to review Smithson’s records, interview staff members and report their findings to the executive committee.

Williams has also admitted to keeping a “journal” on Smithson that reportedly documents her every move as it relates to her work schedule, something that Smithson discovered herself, and reported to Ripple.  Williams allegedly kept the journal for several years on office computers.  According to sources, it has since been deleted, but several copies of the journal exist. Smithson referred to it as “stalking”and was considering filing a grievance against Williams but Dr.Ripple talked her out of it.

Williams questions the accuracy of Smithson’s time sheets and the amount of sick leave she’s claimed, and says they are fraudulent.  He claims that he and “others” want an independent investigation, although he is the only employee who signed the grievance.

It’s unclear where or how Williams obtained  the information about Smithson, but he has admitted to Ripple that he had the records. Williams made no formal requests;  speculation is that he obtained it from Finance Director Judy Burkhart’s office without her knowledge, according to sources within the office. It’s also unclear how Williams was able to gather all of that information without the help of others.  Ripple said that will be part of his investigation.

Williams, himself, was just disciplined in November 2012 for submitting inaccurate expense receipts and collecting money to which he was not entitled for a series of conferences he attended on behalf of the planning commission. The overcharges totaled $835.13.   Dr. Ripple required that Williams pay the money back, and then assessed him five annual leave days for the fraud.  Ripple also told Williams he would not receive a raise during the current fiscal year, or any reclassification to a higher pay grade or step adjustment.

Williams accepted the discipline in a letter dated November 19th, 2012 and said, “As long as all ‘exempt’ employees are treated equally, I accept your findings.”  Williams wrote a check for the overcharges.

The tension between Williams and Smithson came to a head on Tuesday of this week, following a meeting of the executive committee  attended by both mayors.  Williams made allegations during the meeting that he had not been involved in the budget process last year when Smithson was interim director.  Smithson responded,  “that’s just not true.”  Afterwards, the two got into an argument in the hallway.

Mike Harrison, chairman of the executive committee, said he was surprised at Williams’ expense reports and his admission to keeping the journal on Smithson.  “Stan knows he’s an ‘exempt’ employee and how his comp time and sick leave are handled, so I’m surprised at his oversight on his expense reports.  In the corporate world, if you submit fraudulent expense reports and get caught, more than likely you would be terminated.”

On Williams keeping a journal on Smithson, Harrison said, “I’m also quite surprised that he has admitted to keeping a journal on Audrea for all those years.  I would be concerned, too, if I learned that somebody was tracking my every move and I’m not sure that during the gathering of all that information about Smithson, Williams  hasn’t done something seriously wrong, if not criminal,” Harrison stated.

Dr. Ripple would not discuss much about the grievance until he has had a chance to investigate.

This is the second grievance filed at the Regional Planning Commission within the past year.

The USJGT sponsors tournaments all over the south, inviting junior golfers, ages 8-18, to compete with some of the best golfers in their age group. It also offers tournament opportunities for young golfers to give them the chance to improve on their tournament skills, and to play in a “pressure” environment to test their game.

Long said her round was pretty steady today, considering she didn’t start the day with a quadruple bogey on the first hole like she did on Saturday.

“Yesterday, I started with an 8 on #1 and I was scrambling from there, so making a par on that hole today was a great start. It wasn’t as windy today too so that helped, and I seemed to have a better “feel” for the greens today.”

Long was six shot back of the first round leader entering Sunday’s final round, and seemed to be more comfortable as the round went on.

“I seemed to get some momentum on the back side, and finished the last three holes one under par. I should have birdied 18 but left my putt short.”

Hanley won her division at last year’s Hank Miles Junior City Amateur, and could be a golfer to watch in the Clarksville area.

“Other than the weather, we had a great tournament, said Vaughn. It’s early in the year, so the grounds are still recovering from winter, but all in all, I think the field did well.”

The USJGT hopes to sponsor another event in the fall at Swan Lake.

Hendersonville’s Jacob Sherlin leads the High School Boys division with a 5 over par 76, on the par 71 golf course. He has a four shot lead over Tyler Howard of Bartlett TN, and Zachary Olsen of Cordova, TN who each shot 80.

Olsen, who will play college golf for Oklahoma State, was not pleased with his effort today.

“My putting was horrible today. Actually, nothing about my game was good today. The pins were in some tough spots, but I just didn’t play like I’m capable of playing” said Olsen.

There were several Clarksville golfers in the boys high school division.

Payton Williams shot 84, Nicholas Lee shot 84, Aaron King shot 87, and Sam Davis shot 89.

Most all of the participants talked about how difficult the course was playing along with the weather conditions. Winds were whipping around the course making it difficult to control each shot

Owen Workman, 14 years old from Paducah, KY said he had trouble on the greens.

“They were really fast and my short game let me down” he said. “But I had a great time and it was fun being out there.”

In the girls high school division, Bailey Tyree of Benton KY leads at 79. She’s followed by Clarksville’s Riley Cooper at 81, Sydney Trimble from Paducah KY shot 84, Caroline Caudill and Hanley Long shot 85 and Breana Smith shot 86.

Catherine Caudill and Anna Michelle Moore are also competing in this division from Clarksville.

The USJGT is designed to promote junior golf and give young golfers the opportunity to compete with other top juniors in their age group. Swan Lake Golf Pro Jeff Vaughn said the tournament went smoothly, and the Tournament organizers did a great job getting all of the competitors around the course.

“The USJGT does a great job sponsoring these tournaments, and we’re excited to be hosting two of them this year, said Vaughn. The playing conditions were a little tough toady, but I think everyone had a good time.”

“I stayed out of the trees, so that was good, but I couldn’t putt and chip to save my life” said Long.

Hanley is the daughter of Jeff and Lisa Long, and comes from a family rich in golf talent. Her uncle is Rob Long, one of the greatest amateur golfers to ever play. Her father Jeff, is a multiple tournament winner in Clarksville and has won the Tournament of Champions.

Sara Hagedorn, a fifth grader from Benton KY said she’s been playing a couple of years and her father introduced her to the game.

“I was having trouble with my short game today. I couldn’t chip and putt” she said.

Also from Benton, 1o year old Jay Nimmo said he had fun but was having trouble driving the ball.

“My driver wasn’t working for me today, so I was having problems hitting greens.”

All in all, the tournament is a great opportunity for young golfers to meet other competitors and play in a tournament format. Most of the participants play for their high school golf team, so the competition makes them better.

Charlston Beard, from Marshall County, KY, who shot 90, said her round was a roller-coaster.

“My biggest problem today was between my ears. I was battling my mind all day trying to make good decisions. I just got back to playing after having shoulder surgery, so this is really my first real competition since then.”

The second round of the tournament tees off at 8:00am Sunday morning. Tournament organizers are hopeful that they will be able to complete the tournament before the weather changes. Predictions are for some rain and thunderstorms sometime Sunday afternoon.

The USJGT started in 2001 and organizes exclusive junior golf tournaments all across the country. It’s an amazing collection of talented junior golfers coming together to test their game against the best golfers in their age division.

“Golf is such a huge sport in Clarksville, and Junior Golf is so popular that it just made sense that Clarksville would host one of these premier events. We’re excited to have these young golfers and their families in Clarksville, and to have them play our golf course.”

Swan Lake is a challenging 18 holes of golf that requires the use of most every club in the bag, and participants in this weekend’s event will find the course in great shape.

“We’ve been able to work on the course to prepare for this event, said Vaughn. It should be in great shape for this tournament.”

Preston McClellan, from the USJGT, said they were excited to be able to host an event in such a great place.

“We’re excited to expand into the Clarksville area this spring. Our tour seeks to provide young golfers with an opportunity to grow their game, make new friends and have lasting memories.”

The City of Clarksville and Swan Lake Golf Course is no stranger to hosting top notch golfing events, with a full schedule of local tournaments, the City Amateur Golf Championship, and the ever-popular Junior Golf Tour. Jeff Vaughn said he and his staff are looking forward to a great weekend of golf, and to showcase the city of Clarksville.

“It’s really quite an honor to be chosen to host one of these events, and we’re excited that we will host another one in the fall. I think Clarksville should be proud that we are the home to these USJGT events, and will have the opportunity to have so many people from out of town come to our community.”

We’ve been hooked ever since.

My wife knows all the players, listens to sports/talk radio, keeps up with all the latest Nashville Predators news.

As a news/sports “junkie” I have always been a fan of the game, because I think hockey players are the best professional athletes on the planet. The things they can do, no, the things they HAVE to do just to play the game is amazing.

Try asking Rob Bironas to kick a field goal wearing ice skates. Better yet, try asking Rob Bironas to skate.

If you’ve never seen a hockey game live, and I mean an NHL game, you don’t know what you’re missing. Television just doesn’t do it justice. It’s such a fast paced game, with athletes who have amazing hand/eye coordination, ice skating skills, and toughness to “rough” it up the entire game.

And not to mention, they’re in incredible shape. I mean let’s face it, they run “wind sprints” all night.

The Nashville Predators organization does an amazing job to accommodate the fans. From the moment you enter the Bridgestone Arena, or “Smashville,” to the moment you leave the game, they put on one hell of a show.

You’re greeted by a friendly ticket taker, then immediately welcomed by a member of the staff handing out programs or promotional items. You immediately are engulfed by all the smells of the food vendors, and captivated by the excitement of just being there.

Once you get to your section, another “host” shows you to your seat, and the excitement begins to build.

The jumbo tron is showing video shots of people in the crowd, promotional announcements and more. And the music is LOUD, just like I like it.

GAME ON !

Most people tell me they don’t go to a game because they don’t understand hockey. I tell them to just go for the fast paced action and the “rock concert” feel of the event.

If you can’t enjoy the “people watching,” not to mention the excitement of the game, then something is seriously wrong with you. Plus,when you leave the game, you walk right out into lower Broadway, the “pulse” of the Music City.

Awesome! What’s not to love?

The Nashville Predators put on a great show, night after night, and that’s no easy task. Over 17,000 people per night, and they’re good at it.

Go to a game sometime. You won’t be disappointed. Regardless of who wins.

Brian E. Kiley was killed by a drunk driver as he drove home from a performance in North Carolina a couple of weeks ago.

The heart wrenching tragedy of this is being felt throughout the Nashville comedy community.  Brian was just a guy everybody was pulling for.  There was no doubt he was going to “make it.”

It was great.

I met people named, Leno, Seinfeld, Kinison and others.  Just a bunch of “no-names” trying to make the big time.  I wanted to do what they were doing.  I wanted to be a comedian.  I just couldn’t make the sacrifice while raising a young family.

Fast forward to 2009.

I decided to start taking some comedy workshops offered by Rik Roberts “School of Laughs” in Nashville.  Rik would tell me, “it’s never too late to get in the game.”

Plus, I felt like I needed to recharge my radio energy and learn more about writing and performing.  His School of Laughs is an amazing launching pad for aspiring entertainers.  It was here that I got the “head start” on the world of stand-up comedy.

It’s also how I met Brian E. Kiley.  He was going places.  He was going to be a good one.

The Nashville comedy community is a very close knit community.  Most people outside of Nashville don’t realize how many comedians live and work in Nashville.  Ralphie May, Henry Cho, Rik Roberts and others, call Nashville their home.  Other comics like Keith Alberstadt, and Nate Bargatze are from Nashville, now working out of New York.

It truly is a great comedy town.

Brian E. Kiley just wanted to make people laugh.  That’s the way it is with most comedians.   Get onstage and hear the laughter.  Brian was a professional.

His stories about his life, and his struggles with his weight were exclusive to him.  He was just a guy that everybody could like.  A guy you had to pull for.  A guy who made you laugh.

That’s the thing about comedy.  We know how difficult it is to stand in front of strangers and “crack the funny.”  When it’s good, it’s great.  When it’s bad, it’s horrible.

Comics know that feeling.  We share it together.

As I was learning my way around the Nashville comedy scene, I put together a stand-up comedy benefit in Clarksville, called, “Comedy on the Cumberland.”  Brian Kiley was one of the first to perform at that event.  I will always remember his comments after the show.

“That’s the best set I’ve ever had in my life,  Clarksville is awesome!.”

He really was amazing that night.

He would open his set with;

“Came into town today and had a little dinner at the Cumberland Grille.  It was great.  Apparently, that’s where Clarksville sends it’s old people to die.”

Classic.

I never laughed so hard in my life.  You could hear me backstage.

Brian would come back a year later and do another show, by popular demand.

His close friend, and Clarksville comedian, Chris Killian remembers his good friend as he reacted to the news of Brian’s tragic death;

“My first and best real friend from comedy Brian E. Kiley was killed this morning in a terrible car accident.  He was truly one of the best dudes I knew and often acted as my moral compass.  This is the worst news I can imagine, and Brian absolutely did not deserve this. So sorry for his other friends and family, especially his new wife Amber and stepdaughter McKala.  Please, please, please RIP and I love you dude.”

Keith Alberstadt, who shared the stage with Brian in Clarksville said;

“ I’ll always remember Brian as a very patient and big-hearted guy. I only did a few shows with him but he stood out as a comic who cared about more than just the show. He stretched beyond the normal parameters that define most comedians these days. Coming home to Nashville has always been something I look forward to, especially when people like Brian made the comedy community there so fun and enjoyable to be around. My thoughts and prayers are with the Nashville comedy family. It’s a sad, tough time.

“He was just a great guy.  We worked a lot of shows together, and became very close.  I’m just heartbroken over his death.  It’s been very hard on me and everyone who knew him.”

Chad Riden, a veteran of the Nashville comedy scene and fellow Comedy on the Cumberland performer, described Brian Kiley this way;

“Brian E. Kiley did everything right. In an industry full of enormous egos and irrational senses of entitlement, Brian was very levelheaded, patient and realistic. He was a very hard worker. He wrote clean, accessible, energetic comedy and crowds loved him. He was a smart guy.. and a good man. Kiley had a good heart.. and a lot of heart.. and he is missed.”

Brian’s life was in such a good place.  After the loss of his mother last year, he met and married a former Clarksville girl, Amber Wurst.  She and her daughter were the absolute joy of Brian’s life.  He worshiped them both.

Brian was also conquering his weight problem.  He had lost 100 pounds, and unless you’ve struggled with your weight, you can’t appreciate what an accomplishment that is.  The last picture I remember him posting on Facebook was the one showing he didn’t need the seat belt “extender” to fly to his next gig.  I was so proud and envious of his accomplishment.

I’ve made some very good friends through stand up comedy. The comedy community has been friendly and supportive to me.  I’ve loved making new friends, and watching them grow and refine their craft.

I’ll miss Brian E. Kiley.

Sponsored in part by F&M Bank and Clarksville Online, the ceremony was to present Nishimura with a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal that had been awarded to his unit in 2010, in a unanimous vote of Congress, and approved by President Barack Obama.

Nishimura was left off of the list of veterans to receive their recognition due to a field promotion he received while serving his country, and a change in his serial number.  Through the efforts of friends and family, Nishimura received his award and was given his place in history on Friday.

Dignitaries from the City of Clarksville and Montgomery County as well as State Representative Joe Pitts, Bo Patten from Congressman Marsha Blackburn’s office, and LTC Richard Coyle from the command headquarters at Fort Campbell were on hand to recognize the invaluable service and sacrifice made by Nishimura.

Proclamations were read from Jerry Rivers, Director of Veteran’s Services on behalf of Montgomery Mayor Carolyn Bowers, who made Friday, “George Nishimura” day.

Mayor Pro-Temp James Lewis read a brief statement on behalf of Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan.

Representative Joe Pitts presented a join resolution from the Tennessee House and Senate recognizing the service of Nishimura.

LTC. Coyle spoke eloquently about the 442nd and the difficult times endured by the Japanese-American servicement.

The 442nd remains one of the most highly decorated military regiments in history, with 21 Medals of Honor, 52 distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, 4,000 Bronze Stars and 9,486 Purple Hearts awarded.

Nishimura was selected to serve in the Military Intelligence Service after training in Camp Shelby, Mississippi.  He went on to serve in the Pacific Theater but also served in Australia and Japan.

Senator Mark Green said, “this is one of the most special things I have ever done.  It’s an honor to capture this moment in history, especially since I served with Mr. Nishimura’s son-in-law.  Unless you have served your country, you will never know the bond that exists between soldiers and how distinguished it is to be recognized in this way.”

Nishimura said he was “honored by all the attention, and grateful to be recognized by so many friends and dignitaries.”

George Nishimura will celebrate his 90th birthday on Monday.

Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard stopped all 33 shots he faced on the night, as the Predators continued to miss scoring opportunities.

Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne made 23 saves on the night, but the Predators have allowed at least three goals for the third time in a week.

It was all Detroit, as Drew Miller started the scoring at 5:11 into the game on a wrist-shot past Rinne. It was the only goal scored in the period.

At 2:58 of the second, Detroit’s Tomas Tatar netted a wrister to make it 2-0.

Niklas Kronwall nailed a slap shot at 15:33 into the second to make it 3-0, and at 11:48 into the third, Daniel Cleary scored on a tip-in for the final score of the game.

Next Game

Nashville returns to the Bridgestone Arena on Monday night, February 25th to face the Dallas Stars.

After having its offense held in check for four innings, Saturday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park, Austin Peay State University’s baseball team exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth against three Illinois State pitchers, as the Governors rallied for a 9-6 victory over the Redbirds.

Dylan Riner drew a walk in between two strikeouts to load the bases for Austin Peay, which was followed by a bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter Brett Carlson to force in Massoni to cut the Redbirds (2-3) lead to 4-2.

The Govs would tie the game 4-4 on a two-run double to center by Jordan Hankins, and then take its first lead of the day when Illinois State center fielder Chad Hinshaw’s throw to third base got away and allowed Carlson score the go-ahead run to make it 5-4.

Austin Peay wasn’t done, with Reed Harper following with an RBI single — and after Massoni’s second hit of the inning – Harper scored on an error by the Redbirds shortstop. The final run of the inning would come on a base-loaded walk to Kyle Schlatter, which closed the inning with the Govs getting six hits, three walks and seeing Illinois State commit five errors.

The rally would make a winner out of Governors starter Casey Delgado (1-1), who went the first five innings allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits and two walks. He struck out four. Tyler Rogers picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Govs would tack on a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Schlatter, to make it 9-4, before the Redbirds closed out the day’s scoring with two runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Brett Kay for the 9-6 final score. Hudson would lead the Govs with three hits, while Hankins and Massoni had two hits each.

Illinois State’s Chad Hinshaw led off the game for the Redbirds with a flared single into short right field, but Govs right fielder Rolando Gautier let the ball get past him and Hinshaw advanced to second base. Both runners would move up a base on a double steal, with Delgado recording a strikeout on the play.

Illinois State’s Eric Aguilera would follow by driving in his fourth RBI of the series, on a ground ball to second ball, bringing in Hinshaw with the game’s first run – and give the Redbirds their first lead of the series, 1-0.

Austin Peay looked like it had a chance to at least tie the game in the bottom of the second inning, as they got two runners on, with Massoni drawing a walk and Hudson reaching on a bunt single, but Torres skied a ball into short right where Redbirds second baseman Marshall Vallandingham dropped the ball, but the umpires had invoked the infield fly rule and Massoni – who thought he had to advance to second – was thrown out at second base to end the inning and the threat.

An error by Govs third baseman Kevin Corey would lead to Illinois State’s fourth run of the game in the fifth inning, with Aguilera driving in Hinshaw – who reached on the error – with a single.

The two teams conclude the three-game series Sunday, with a 1:00pm contest.
