Clarksville, TN – Trinity Episcopal Parish, in downtown Clarksville, is excited to announce their 4th annual Fall Festival and Pumpkin Chunkin’ Event will be held on Saturday, November 3rd from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the church located at 317 Franklin Street in Historic Downtown Clarksville.

Also returning this year will be the amazing ladies from Thistle Farms. Thistle Farms is the social enterprise that is run by the women of Magdalene. Magdalene is a residential program for women who have survived lives of prostitution, trafficking, addiction and life on the streets. By hand, these women create natural bath and body products that are as good for the earth as they are for the body. Pumpkin Chunkin’

Have you even seen a pumpkin flying 40-50 feet up in the air? Want to give it a try? Use our catapult to launch left-over Halloween pumpkins into the sky and then watch as they splat onto our target. Try it more than once until you land a pumpkin in the bull’s eye!

Authentic Brunswick Stew

Jody Bridgforth making his famous Brunswick Stew to share with everyone!

Stewed up for you in a 35+ gallon iron cauldron, the men’s group of Trinity come together and cook all night to provide you with our now FAMOUS authentic Brunswick Stew. It is a real southern dating back to the 1700′s.

Brunswick stew is most commonly made with chicken, or a combination of several meats, which may include rabbit, squirrel, beef, and pork. Onions, corn, and tomatoes are usually included, and many recipes call for the addition of  lima beans, peas, and/or okra.

It’s delicious! So come have a steaming bowl of stew with some cornbread, and take a quart home with you too. We will also offer hot dogs, chips, drinks and delicious bake sale treats.

Cake Walk

We will have over 30 chances to win treats at our cake walk! By a ticket and jump from plate to plate for a chance to win!

Scarecrow Making

Another new addition to this year’s festival will be the Scarecrow Making Station. You and your children can make a scarecrow to take home with you. We will provide all the supplies. You are limited only by your imagination.

Obstacle Course and Kids Activities

A huge favorite each year is the Mega-Obstacle Course inflatable. Kids play for hours! Of course, we’ll also have a balloon artist, bobbing for apples, 2 crafting tables, face painting, a cake walk and more!

The Framemaker proudly presents photography by Mitzi Cross and Malcolm Glass’ exhibit, titled “Shadows of the Light Body,”
Cross and Glass have shown their work in numerous galleries and juried exhibitions in the mid-south.

The exhibition of portraits and figure studies of women focuses on alternative photographic processes such as solarizations, hand-colored photographs, and bromoil prints.  Also featured is a series of works that emulate well-known paintings.  Most of the photographs in the exhibit are one-of-a-kind works.

Beverly states, “I believe there is Beauty all around us but the key to capturing it is learning how to feel it. Only then can something become more than just a photograph. Ingredients will be hosting Monica O’Neill and Kristina Waters for June 7th ArtWalk.

Ms. O’Neill is an art teacher at Rossview Elementary School. She works in many different types of media, including oil, acrylic, illustration, collage, origami, clay, & jewelry and her current work has been with collage & mixed media painting with at times incorporating origami.

Kristina Waters is professional cook who has cooking for 20 years now, the last 8 or so as a professional. Ms. Waters was taught by her mother and her mother’s mother the basics of food, meal and menu planning, and how to shop for the best food, at the best prices. As she became an adult, she was amazed that she could work, as a cook, and that people found value in what she had to offer and wants to pass these same skills on to others!

Kimberly Caldwell and Vicky Clinard will be at Rogate’s Boutique in June.

We are two sisters who love photography, antiques and creating things.  We originally took up photography in school.  Then kids came along with ball games, science projects and homework.  But now all our kids are out of school, some with families of their own and others away at college, and we both rediscovered our love of taking photographs.  As we shared them with each other we noticed that while we could be taking pictures of the same thing, our pictures did not look the same.  Each one of us had a unique perspective that came through each photograph!

Roxy Regional Theatre

ARTifacts Emporium

ARTifacts Emporium, 124 Strawberry Alley, will feature metalsmith, Anna Heron, and artisan knitter, Angie Chambers of Blessed Threads.

Anna Heron’s design statement reads, “”Design is the application of intent – the opposite of happenstance, and an antidote to accident.” – Robert L. Peters Design can cross all types of media, whether it is corporate design, fine art or jewelry design. They all are subject to the different design aesthetics that all of us enjoy, but few can define.

I recently began to mix different types of media and have started exploring the mixture of silver and leather. The mix of textures and colors is rewarding since I have only been working with silver and cabochons these past few years. I hope that everyone enjoys this side road of exploration I have begun in the world of design.

Angie Chambers learned how to crochet from her grandmother many years ago. She is a mother of four, music teacher, and works in various ministries at her church. Crocheting helps her to relax and allows her to use her creative ideas in fun ways. Her business name, Blessed Threads, is based off of the Bible verse, Proverbs 31:13, “She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands” (KJV).

Downtown Artist Co-op

Downtown Artist Co-op, 96 Franklin Street, Rhonda Taylor will be the featured artist at DAC for the month of May. She will be showing her favorite collection of scenes from Texax to Tennessee. Her photographic art is titled Visions of Art from a Woman’s Perspective and is made up of her interpretation of interesting things with unique qualities: an antique door; a brilliant red sky; a woodland stream; Strawberry Alley; flowers, and more. AS usual, the opening reception will be from 5:00pm-8:00pm on First Thursday Artwalk.

The front window of DAC will be exhibiting a theme show of Rotary Park in the Spring featuring the outdoor photography of Cliff Whittaker.

The Framemaker

The Framemaker, 705 North Second Street, presents artist Melanie Davis. The exhibit, titled “Horse Trails –> Highways,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of May during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm).

Born in the Chicago land area, Melanie Davis currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband Bill. Melanie attended college at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, and completed her studies in photography at Columbia College in Chicago. About the series, “Horse Trails –> Highways,” the artist states, “coming from the grid of Chicago to the circular traffic system of Nashville was very confusing, but I also fell in love with the way the highways, beltways, and thoroughfares intersect with each other. The result of these crossovers is an otherworldly urban landscape.”

Fleur de Lis

Fleur de Lis, 100 South Main Street, will feature Caroline Rowell, Owner of Oh How Tweet. Caroline creates handmade, southern, custom children’s clothing. She appliques and monograms her own items and anything a customer brings to her. Her motto is, nothing is as southern as a monogram! Come see her beautiful creations and order something custom for your little one!!

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge, 125 Franklin Street, will feature Tammy Irions. In her artist statement Tammy says, “ I grew up in the Cunningham community and I began painting about ten years ago. I’m self-taught and love to paint everyday rural scenes and objects. I try to share the happiness and love I have in my life through my paintings.”

Ingredients

Ingredients, 100 Strawberry Alley, Ingredients will be hosting painter Terri Jordan. Terri’s paintings are influenced by experiences with friends, family, and voyeuristic moments. She is interested in executing paintings that embrace the glamour of the past fused with being a woman in the twenty-first century. Ms. Jordan is the Curator of Exhibits at the Customs House Museum and this is her first ArtWalk appearance.

Ingredients will also be show casing some of their food items for your tasting pleasure!

Rogate’s Boutique

Rogate’s Boutique, 115 Franklin Street, will feature jewelry designer, Jo Violette. Ms Violette has developed a unique line of colorful, expressive jewelry handcrafted from lightweight acrylic polymers. Her patterns are drawn from nature, fashion & industry. The images are digitized by computer & the colors are manipulated with graphics software. Jo cuts large sheets of acrylic into intricate overlapping forms that will become the necklace pendants.

She overlays the art onto the acrylic as a thin layer of pigment and the two are heat bonded together at high temperatures. Jo has created jewelry that changes with the light and reflects a new creative style.

Roxy Regional Theatre

The Roxy Regional Theatre, 100 Franklin Street, Peg Harvill Gallery will feature the artwork of Michelle and Aaron Grayum to complement the Roxy’s upcoming production of “13: The Musical,” opening May 11th in theotherspace.

APSU Downtown Gallery (116 Strawberry Alley) is hosting the Open Exhibition, sponsored by US Bank and the APSU Department of Art. The Open Exhibition is open to Montgomery County and surrounding area residents 18 years and older. 20% of all entry fees will be donated to the APSU/US Bank Scholarship fund. Winners will be awarded in both amateur and professional categories. An opening reception will be held April 5th from 5:00pm-8:00pm as part of First Thursday.

ARTifacts Emporium

ARTifacts Emporium (124 Strawberry Alley) will feature the artistic creations of Rachel Wainwright and Kelly Peters.

Rachel Wainwright, jewelry designer, says this in her artist statement: I love to break plates! I especially like to break your plates, you know, those in the cupboard from Great Grandma that don’t match anything in your house? I like to turn those dust collectors into something precious to wear close to your heart.

Kelly Peters, a local potter, has been with ARTifacts for over a year now, sharing her ceramic creations, ranging from hand thrown pieces, to ceramics. She also has several knitted items that she made and tools to make knitting more fun with her unique style

ARTifacts Studio Space, 3rd floor 124 Strawberry Alley, will open “Celebrate Us”, a show of 9 CMCSS art teachers. Artists include: Emily Parsons, Vicki Davenport, Monica O’Neill, Lee Bergman, Debra Harrison, Rita Woodward, Mary Gail Russ, Corey Heard and Maureen Griffin

Downtown Artist Co-Op

Downtown Artist Co-op (96 Franklin Street) will be hosting an exhibit by James Diehr from April 5th – 25th. The show is titled Memories Unwound and is a retrospective show of sculpture, painting and poetry. The show will open at 5:30 with a reception hosted by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative arts. This will be in conjunction with the downtown area First Thursday Artwalk.

At the same time North East Middle School will be exhibiting the work of several of their award winning art students in the front window of DAC. The NEMS exhibit is coordinated by art teacher Theresa Kindrick.

Edwards Steakhouse

Edwards Steakhouse (107 Franklin Street) will feature Jason Montgomery at the piano for your entertainment during the March Art Walk. Also, featured throughout the restaurant are paintings by Lynne Waters Griffey, Frank Lott and photographs by David Smith and Grant Schryver.

The Framemaker

The Framemaker (705 North Second Street) proudly presents paintings by Judith Jackson as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, April 5th, 2012. An opening reception will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit, titled “Flower Power,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of April during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm).

Judith Jackson is a “plein air” painter who draws inspiration from nature’s light and atmosphere. Three of her paintings are included in the collection of The Tennessee State Museum. She is a member of The Chestnut Group, The Nashville Artist Guild, Women Painters of the Southeast, Tennessee Art League, Monthaven Art Society and The Simpson County Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. According to the artist, “I create art to promote beauty and joy from my interpretation of life.”

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge (125 Franklin Street) will host Beth Ryan who moved to Clarksville about five years ago.  Beth studied at the Ohio State University and graduated with a degree in drawing/painting/printmaking.  Having put her art on hold while raising her kids, then pursuing a career, Beth is enjoying the opportunity to get back to painting.  Beth is also an accomplished flute player.  She is a member of the Cumberland Winds Band, the Cumberland Winds Woodwind Quintet,  Flutissimo, a flute quartet, part of a flute, harp duet with Ted Jones, and gives lessons at the First Baptist Academy.

Creative Corner

Also at Hodgepodge, in Creative Corner, join mixed media artist, Kimberly Santiago as she introducing new artist kits to help induce your creative side to emerge out of winter hypernation.  Come get your art on with Creative Corner.

Photographer, Tonya Coleman has a minor in Photography from APSU and continues to take multiple photo classes, both online and across Tennessee, always trying to expand her knowledge. “I really want to challenge myself and pursue different interests in photography. From the abstract to the documentary, I try to create compelling images using whatever means meets the challenge: digital, film, or alternative processes, even though film is my absolute passion.” Tonya’s photos range from abstract to landscape to still life and everything in between.

Baker, Kimberly White is a military wife and a mother of 3 boys. Originally from New York she currently lives in Fort Campbell, KY. Kimberly is a full-time student and in her free time loves to bake for her family and friends. Her biggest passion is baking cupcakes and enjoys bringing the sweet tooth out in people and feels her cupcakes do just that!

Rogate’s Boutique

Rogate’s Boutique (115 Franklin Street) will feature Claire Meriweather. A Native of Clarksville and graduate of Austin Peay State University; Claire graduated in 2009 with a degree in Fine Art with an emphasis in Studio Art: painting. Claire works mainly in oil and watercolor paints, but also enjoys experimenting with mixed media and pastel work as well. Of her work Claire says she’s interested in elements of nature, the human form, myths, and storytelling.

Roxy Regional Theatre

The Roxy Regional Theatre’s (100 Franklin Street) Peg Harvill Gallery features the artwork of Chad Spann to complement the upcoming production of the Tony Award-winning musical SPRING AWAKENING, opening April 13th.

APSU Downtown Gallery

APSU Downtown Gallery, Strawberry Alley, The APSU Downtown Gallery, Strawberry Alley, will open “Works from Rusty Barwick and Carolann Haggard” for the month of March.

Rusty’s work reflects twenty years of existence in rural, middle Tennessee. Storm-felled trees provide firewood and materials for sculpture. Old, rusted machine parts and even rocks gleaned from a garden patch have become components of Rusty’s sculptures.
Carolann’s work reflects a communion of past and present. Her sculptures are an assemblage of natural stones, man-made shapes in stone and found objects. Her use of classical materials stems from her past experience with architectural sites.

Both Rusty and Carolann work in the Department of Art and teach in both the 2D and 3D areas.

ARTifacts Emporium

ARTifacts Emporium, 124 Strawberry Alley, will feature jewelry artist and instructor, Rachel Ison and Jodi Stephens.

Rachel Ison, jewelry designer, specializes in wire wrapping and working with repurposed items to make a truly unique piece. Also dedicated to teaching others how to make jewelry she has recently begun offering jewelry making classes at ARTifacts. Come down and see what she classes she has coming up and what creations she has just for you.

Jodi Stephens, when asked about her body products says, “ I create soaps and body products that are as close to natural as possible. All body products, including scrubs, face wash, deodorant, “shampoo”, and hair conditioner are made from products that re all natural. The environment and your body will thank you!”

Downtown Artist Co-op

Downtown Artist Co-op, 96 Franklin Street, The title is “Elements”, a collection of art work by Clarksville Academy high school students. It includes photography, 3D works, painting, drawing, watercolor and printmaking. The invitation was made by students in the printmaking class. The CA instructors are Piper Bell, Robert Neitzke and Day Drew. The work will be hung on Monday and Tuesday, February 27th-28th. Reception will be at 5:00pm at DAC during the First Thursday Artwalk for March.

F&M Bank

F&M Bank, 50 Franklin Street, will feature the art of Pat Finney. Pat be featuring the 4th floor in the Cumberland Room. There will be a light reception from 6:00pm-8:00pm for the art and artist in the Cumberland Room.

The Framemaker, 705 North Second Street, Bather: Paintings by Suta Lee

The Framemaker proudly presents artist Suta Lee as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, March 1st, 2012. An opening reception will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit, titled “Bather,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of March during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm).

The Framemaker is located at the corner of North Second Street and Georgia Avenue, across from The Clarksville Academy.

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge, 125 Franklin Street will feature David Smith & Red River Breeze.

David Smith is a retired U.S. Army Still Photographer, He arrived in Clarksville in 1976 as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He returned to Clarksville with his family after his retirement from the military. He has just recently started shooting photographs again. and is a member of The Clarksville Friends of Photography. Most of his photographs are of Landscapes and scenery, many of which are of the Clarksville area. He feels that it’s important for a photographer to help preserve the history in photographs.

“Red River Breeze is a local acoustical, instrumental band that plays traditional Celtic, Renaissance, and world music, featuring hammered dulcimer, Irish whistle, fiddles, guitar and drum. The group has just released a new CD, entitled “The Wren at the Window,” and on March 1st, Stephanie Taylor (hammered dulcimer) and David Magers (guitar) will be here to play selections from the new CD.”

Ingredients, 100 Strawberry Alley, will feature Judy Morganz & Trish Tallon-Blanchard.
Judy Morgan is a retired teacher and administrator from the Clarksville Montgomery County School System. After retiring, she pursued her love of watercolor.

Judy explores new techniques of applying watercolor on paper by reading books, taking art classes, and painting with friends. Currently she is discovering the colors, shapes, and materials used in making abstracts. Judy continues with her love of colors and shapes by designing jewelry. Both will be on display at Ingredients during March’s Art Walk.

Trish Tallon-Blanchard is currently using the skills she has developed over a lifetime as a studio artist making organic heirloom coconut cakes. Her cakes have been the guilty pleasure and preferred gift of her friends, family and those who know her art work. Trish’s aesthetic and attention to detail are what makes her cakes among the more unique and beautiful options available in the artisanal, heirloom, organic confections market.

New South Coffee, 110 Franklin Street, will feature Tonya Colman, Lydia Walker & Nathaniel Green.

Tonya Coleman was born and raised in the country fields of Erin, TN and has ran around with a camera since she was little. She has a minor in Photography from Austin Peay State University and continues to take multiple photo classes, both online and across Tennessee, always trying to expand her knowledge.

Nathaniel Green is a folk artist that writes his own music. He says his music is meant for the soul, his inspiration is his father. And he loves the picking banjo vibe.

Rogate’s Boutique

Rogate’s Boutique, 115 Franklin Street, will feature G. Wizz Expressions. “G” Wizz Expressions was started because hair accessories shouldn’t just be for little girls. Our goal is to beautify the world one accessory at a time. We not only make hair clips and headbands we also have many different styles of scarfs.

Roxy Regional Theatre

How long you have been open: Planters celebrated its 15-year anniversary in 2011.

Why did you open downtown?

From the beginning of its days in Hopkinsville, the founders of the bank always had plans to locate in Clarksville. Downtown, the financial center of Clarksville-Montgomery County, was simply the obvious place to start.

The emphasis on rebuilding downtown after the tornado provided the perfect opportunity from a timing standpoint. So, we were one of the first businesses to commit to build after that event, and one of the first to open anew in the post-tornado downtown Clarksville.

Most challenging part of being downtown?

We are a block or so off of the highest-traffic roads, so visibility has been a bit of a challenge. The 100 block of Franklin Street has been promoted as “Clarksville’s historic downtown,” but that’s much more to the downtown landscape beyond that single block.

Most rewarding part of being downtown?

Unlike our suburban branches, our downtown branch experiences a fair amount of pedestrian traffic from neighboring businesses. The physical proximity to a variety of other retail and service organizations makes a downtown location a rewarding experience. As well, employees have the opportunity to walk, visit customers and prospects, shop and dine, without having to drive.

Favorite part of being part of the downtown business community:

We love being involved opportunities and events that promote and create awareness for downtown Clarksville. It is the heart of our community and we hope it always will be. Many of our employees are native Clarksvillians, or spent our “growing up years” here and have wonderful memories of downtown retail, entertainment and events from decades past.

We’re thrilled to be part of the resurgence of that quality atmosphere so that our children can have those same types of experiences and memories.

APSU Downtown Gallery

Austin Peay State University Downtown Gallery, Strawberry Alley, will open “Serenade: the works of Kim Balevre and Danisha Stallings”. Kim’s photographs are taken using a standard 50mm lens and focuses on the visual relationships between light, line, texture, shape and value in Montana’s Paradise Valley. Danisha’s work features poster-like images that focus on the presence of music in her life. Her love of music was influenced by her uncle, Robert Earl Smith, to whom she dedicates this body of work.

Both Kim and Danisha are graduates of the APSU Department of Art.

ARTifacts Emporium

ARTifacts Emporium, 124 Strawberry Alley, will feature artist, Gail Meyer, and craftsperson, Sheri of G Wizz Expressions.

Gail Meyer has been painting since she was 9 years old. She prides herself by being diverse in her painting from miniatures to very large scale paintings. Her main medium is acrylics; but, she has been experimenting with watercolor and pastels and plans on creating a collection of works featuring Clarksville and surrounding areas in the near future.

Sheri joined ARTifacts as a regular vendor before Christmas, and has been expanding her inventory and product line constantly since day one. Specializing in all hand made fashion accessories for woman, she has formed a collection of hair bows, headbands, infinity scarves, and more. The most amazing part is that she has made them all, and kept the costs so amazingly affordable that there is something for all budgets.

Downtown Artist Co-Op

Downtown Artist Co-op, 96 Franklin Street, will feature Richard Hogan. Richard will be opening a new exhibit at Downtown Artists Co-Op on the First Thursday ArtWalk.

Called Lots of Red Dots it will feature forty pieces of Richard’s most recent work, including both framed art and sculpture. The reception will be from 5:00pm-8:00prem.

Fleur de Lis

Fleur de Lis, 100 South Main Street, Lynne Griffey is the featured artist. Lynne is known for her watercolor and oil paintings of historic Clarksville landmarks and nature subjects. She has contributed original art to Clarksville Rotary Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Gold Star Wives, Austin Peay State University and the American Cancer Society for fundraising. Her work and the photography of prize winning visual journalist for the Leaf Chronicle, Greg Williamson, can be seen at several Premier Medical clinics. Greg”s photography will also be available.

The Framemaker

The Framemaker, 705 North Second Street, proudly presents work by Philippe Pirrip (Philip Hyojung Kim). The exhibit will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of February during normal business hours (Mon. through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm). Philippe Pirrip works both as a student and art exhibit curator at Austin Peay University. According to the artist, “My process is often provoked by visible appearances of ideas. The ideas here are mostly composed of numbers and figures; some that are recognizable, some enigmatic.”

The Framemaker is located at the corner of North Second Street and Georgia Avenue, across from The Clarksville Academy.

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge, 125 Franklin Street Paige Thomas King, owner of Hodgepodge, will be demonstrating the easy, yet artistic qualities of her new line of paints, Annie Sloan Chalk Paints.

Paige has been painting furniture for approximately 20 years—moving through a variety of techniques and products—and is delighted to offer this wonderful paint product to Clarksville-Montgomery County. Stop in to see a demonstration and be inspired to become a furniture artist, too!

Ingredients

Ingredients, 100 Strawberry Alley, is hosting Kimberley Moore along with showcasing their own food products.

One day while walking along the creek bed Kimberely found a fossil with a hole in it and thought she could make a necklace out of this, so she did. She has come a long way since then and enjoys making people happy with jewelry that makes them feel pretty.

Each piece of jewelry is made with love so most pieces are attached with a tag that says, “made with love” or beads and charms shaped like hearts. No two pieces are exactly alike. Kimberely is happy to do “special requests”.

New South Coffee

New South Coffee, 110 Franklin Street, will feature Stev Berzolla and David Smith. Stev Berzolla ” Metronome” will be our featured musician, Metronome plays progressive jazz with his saxophone while using a combination of foot peddles to incorporate a mixture of sound without the use of a full band and other instruments. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and had lived in the Clarksville area for the last 2 years.

David Smith will be our featured photographer. David Smith is a retired U.S. Army Still Photographer, who came to the Clarksville area in 1976 as a member of the 101st Airborne Division. He returned to Clarksville with his family after his retirement from the military. He has just recently started shooting photographs again. He is a member of The Friends of Photography here in Clarksville. Most of his photographs are of landscapes and scenery. “I also try and take photographs of the Clarksville area, I feel that it’s important for a photographer to help preserve the history in photographs.”

Rogate’s Boutique

Rogate’s Boutique, 115 Franklin Street, will feature Tara Neal. Tara has recently been focused on small scale ink and watercolor series inspired by the fanciful joy of her children and friends with themes including aviation, local produce, and whimsical fashions. Neal is a local artist and Army wife who received an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art & Design

Roxy Regional Theatre

The Roxy Regional Theatre, 100 Franklin St., Peg Harvill Gallery showcases the work of over 30 artists from the Middle Tennessee area (Windy Mitchell , MikeWindy, Barbara Hampton Herrick, Bruce Childs, Susan Bryant, Billy Renkl, Charles V. Bennett, Megan Kelley, Tiffany Dyer, Brian Allison, Nathan Parker, Travis Stanley, Brandt Hardin, Olivia Molinaro Landry, Chad Spann, Terri Jordan, Pablo Tomas Scruggs, Chip Boles, Connie Livingston-Dunn, Susan Tomi McGolrick, Ed Milburn, Glenn Edgin, Michael McKelvey, Roly M Viruez, Erin Crissey, Gabriele Wardeiner, Clare Coyle Taylor, Rachel Hall Kirk, August Brian Christopher Hampton, Jeff Bertrand, Melanie Collins, Miranda Herrick, Carla Guerra, and Kim Radford).

Each artist has submitted a small piece of two-dimensional art that is their take on the subject of love — happy, sad, bittersweet or hilarious — to complement the Roxy’s musical I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE, opening Friday, February 10th, at 8:00pm.

Clarksville, TN – As a manager of a downtown business, I get asked all the time about my shop, and other downtown shops and why we choose to be part of a downtown community.  Why did we decide to be here versus a strip mall, independent building or in the mall.  Well, I know what the owner of ARTifacts, Paige King,  would say.  But I can’t say for sure what the reasoning for the other business owners in downtown would say.

So I decided it was time to ask!  I thought it would be a good idea to ask all the members of the Downtown Clarksville Association (DCA) all the questions we get asked daily and share them with you here.  Starting with Ingredients – and continuing with all the businesses who decide to participate in this segment of feature articles.  I hope this gives you insight of the downtown shops, restaurants and businesses. I know it has helped me!

Tell us about yourself!

After traveling around for the Army several years we decided to make Clarksville our home and have lived here for 18 years. Mitchell teaches ROTC at Kenwood High School and Monica retired from the school system after 15 years in the business office.

What made you open a shop/restaurant? We talked about owning a business together almost from the first day we met and we followed our dream.

What is your favorite part of running your business? Meeting people.

What inspires you? Our fellow small business owners. Their guidance and encouragement helps us carry on.

Tell us about your business. What products/services do you offer to your customers: We offer kitchen items from pots and pans to textiles; spices to dipping oils; cutting boards to tableware and items in between!

How long you have been open: We opened July 2009.

Why did you open downtown? We have always shopped in the downtowns of the cities we lived in and never thought about opening anywhere but downtown. Each city we left, we left behind friends we got to know who were owners or managers of the boutiques and restaurants downtown. Downtowns are unique and cannot be duplicated in a mall or a strip mall. Just look around at the of the history!

Most challenging part of being downtown? People coming in and saying “I never shop downtown”. Most rewarding part of being downtown? Helping to bring downtown “back to life”, seeing new businesses open and watching established business succeed.

Favorite part of being part of the downtown business community: Being part of the downtown family. We have developed friendships that are very important to us.

The Roxy Regional Theatre

Owner:  The Roxy Regional Theatre Board of Directors owns the theatre as we are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

What made you open a shop/restaurant? Our artistic director, John  McDonald has a funny quote, “We were doing so much bad theatre in New York, we thought we could do some bad theatre, too.”  But in all actuality the need for a live theatre was recognized by Tom and John and they pursued their dream of running a live theatre and made it a reality.

What is your favorite part of running your business?
The best part of this business for me is the amount of people we reach each season.  Last year, over 90,000 patrons came through our doors to see a production.  Within that, 26,000 school children came for daytime performances throughout the school year.  We have the honor and privilege  of fostering the growth and education of the arts.

A Tale of Two Cities at the Roxy Regional Theatre.

What products/services do you offer to your customers:  We are a fully  operational, live, professional theatre.  We are open year round and this year are  offering over 19 different productions for our patrons to enjoy.

We are also offer our Saturday School of the Arts to children 10 years of age and older.  This includes acting, dance and voice.

How long you have been open:  We are currently celebrating our 29th anniversary.  The Roxy Regional Theatre is also the oldest business located in Downtown, Clarksville.

Beehive: The ’60s Musical Sensation.

Why did you open downtown?  After looking at several potential buildings in  Clarksville, the then mayor, Ted Crozier, suggested the Roxy Theatre which was slated to become a parking lot.  Through negotiations we saved the building and the rest is history.

Most challegning part of being downtown?  The most challenging would be all of the other events that take place downtown. We try our hardest to be involved in anything and everything Downtown, but with such a rigorous schedule it is sometimes difficult.  We are also such an icon downtown, that we always have to “be on” for anyone and  everyone.  There can be no “bad days” at the Roxy.

Most rewarding part of being downtown? The Roxy has been called the cornerstone of Downtown Clarksville and that is a reward in itself.  Being able to be in the heart of our community and serve so many people in a centralized location is very rewarding.

We also have the honor of being surrounded by so many other supportive business owners.  We all collectively support one another and recognize that a good day of business at the Roxy means a good day of business downtown and we want nothing more than for downtown Clarksville to continue to succeed and grow.

Favorite part of being part of the downtown business community:  We are our own little family.  We work hard together, to make sure as a collective group we are making progress and continuing to grow and evolve.  I encourage everyone to take in all of what downtown Clarksville has to offer.  Don’t just stop at the corner of 2nd and Franklin Street or at the corner of 1st and Franklin Street, take some time and take in everything that makes up Historic Downtown Clarksville.

ARTifacts Emporium, 124 Strawberry Alley, will be featuring all 40 of our vendors for this holiday artwalk. Join us to meet and greet many of our vendors, all from the local area. Many artists, artisans and antique dealers will be on hand to answer questions, help select a special gift, and discuss special orders.

Downtown Artist Co-op

Downtown Artist Co-op, 96 Franklin Street, will begin their Small Works Exhibit will run for the month of December. The reception will be as usual from 5:00pm-8:00pm for the First Thursday Artwalk and the Red River Breeze will be providing music. The Holiday Bazaar will be Saturday, December 3rd, from nine until five o’clock. Hot cider and refreshments will be served all day.

 The Framemaker

The Framemaker, 705 North Second Street The Framemaker proudly presents photographer Jackie Osborne’s exhibit, titled “Sublime Uncertainty”. Jackie Osborne is a native of Southern Kentucky and currently resides in Nashville, TN. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in SCAD’s permanent collection. The photographs in this exhibit explores the nature and mystery of faith and its influence on our decisions.

Hodgepodge

 Hodgepodge, 125 Franklin Street will feature water color artist, Alexandra Vance, who states, “ I paint because I enjoy every part of the creative and design process. From the photography that begins the process, to the completion of the artistic scene is joyful for me.”

Ingredients

Ingredients, 100 Strawberry Alley, Tiffany Abbott & David Smith. For Ms Abbott, it all started with one cookie cutter and then 200+ cookie cutters later, she decided that she wanted to open a business. Tiffany was able to get certified through the Department of Agriculture and bake in the UT Extension office and before she knew it, she was hooked. Any Sweet Reason has been her project and she has been encouraged by such wonderful people and she is so ecstatic that people have taken so well to cookies.

Rogate’s Boutique

Rogate’s Boutique, 115 Franklin Street, will feature SPC Evan Klocinski. Evan is a Photographer stationed at Fort Campbell with the 63rd Chemical Company. A native of Toledo, OH.; he specializes in nature, wildlife and scenery. Somewhat unique to his work, all of his prints are produced one time making each literally a one-of-a-kind.

The Roxy Regional Theatre

The Roxy Regional Theatre, 100 Franklin Street Peg Harvill Gallery features the artwork of Charles Bennett, Brandt Hardin, Wesley Hall and Dustin Dirt, supporting the current production of Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL, playing through December 17th.

ARTifacts Emporium, 124 Strawberry Alley, will feature the sewing talents of Jessica Clark of Sew Sweet Child. Sew Sweet Child’s clothing is not only designer quality and style but handmade and practical. Jessica’s ability to place fabrics together and her eye for color, make her childrens clothes POP! You wont be able to resist dressing your Sweet Child in these fabulous clothes!”

ARTifacts Workshop Space

ARTifacts Workshop Space also at 124 Strawberry Alley, will host the Art Society of Montgomery Central High School Students. “Our Art Society promotes the arts in our school and community. We host an annual “FUEL” supper that has supported the elementary school FUEL program and recently started supporting our MCHS FUEL program. Art Society students also collect and donate art supplies to add to the Christmas Angels adopted at Montgomery Central Elementary School. Last year Art Society students helped with a first ever Elementary Art Camp for 15 elementary students at MCES. Members also are a resource for teachers helping them create bulletin boards and other creative items for their classrooms. All members have participated and/or entered local and regional art exhibitions. Several have placed in exhibitions and also have sold some of their artwork already.”

Couture Crush

Couture Crush, located at 109 Franklin Street on Second Floor above Mildred and Mabels, will be featuring two local artists during November’s First Thursday Art Walk. Scott Wise and Kay Drew will have selections of their art on display for viewing and for purchase. Both artists are Clarksvillians who have full time professional careers but continue to produce art also.

Scott Wise is a local sculptor and artist who has many stone, clay, and bronze pieces in private and public collections in Tennessee and across the United States. Scott is also a firefighter and art teacher in Clarksville. Couture Crush will have a selection of Scott’s smaller sculptures for the Art Walk visitors including his stone birds. These hand carved stone images are favorites of Kaley Drew, owner of Couture Crush. “I have several birds that were given to me as gifts in my home. I love the way Scott captures the beauty of a birds form in limestone. The form is slightly abstract but accentuates the graceful curves and lines of a resting bird.”

Couture Crush will also have a selection of watercolor and acrylic paintings by Kay Drew on display. Kay Drew is the Head of School for Clarksville Academy but she is also an artist. Kaley Drew is the daughter of Kay Drew. “This summer my Mother painted a mural on the back wall of Couture Crush for me. I described to my vision and explained the colors I wanted incorporated into it. She painted exactly what I had dreamed. She has been creating art for as long as I can remember.” Kay Drew’s art that will be on display will include framed illustrations of familiar scenes and places in Clarksville that have been featured in local books and new originals.

Edwards Steakhouse

Edwards Steakhouse, 107 Franklin Street – Lynne Griffey will be the featured artist at Edward’s Steakhouse. Lynne will be featuring her donated painting to the American Cancer Society’s Love Lights a Tree campaign. Patrons are encouraged to participate in the silent auction for this beautiful watercolor. Giclee prints will be available for purchase to support this worthy cause. Lynne continues to donate paintings for the Big Brother Big Sister Community Calendar, Salvation Army, Clarksville Rotary, the Gold Star Wives and the preservation of Smith-Trahern Mansion among others.

Fleur de Lis

Fleur de Lis, 100 South Main Street - Fleur de Lis will give your avid reader an awesome opportunity to meet and have your copy of ColorBlind personalized just in time for Christmas!

Melanie Meadow is the local author of ColorBlind, a Southern Christian fiction novel set in 1960s South Carolina. Its time period is similar to that of the current popular movie, The Help, but its spotlight on a preacher’s daughter and her dairy farmer friend takes the story of racism and church planting down a different sort of path. Meadow’s book is on sale at Fleur de Lis and is available on e-book through amazon.com.

The Framemaker

The Framemaker, 705 North Second Street – Foresight: Photography by Barger, Chisholm, Clark, Flowers and Griffin.  The Framemaker proudly presents artists Rian Barger, Jon Chisholm, Synthia Clark, Amanda Flowers and Kathryn Griffin as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk. The exhibit, titled “Foresight,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of November during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm).

Each year, the Austin Peay State University photography students are showcased at the Framemaker. The theme of the 2011 exhibit celebrates the person as a photographic subject. The group show explores a variety of visual and psychological themes: from the stranger as subject to the body as abstract figure. Artist Rian Barger states, “I took over a thousand photos of eyes…the five I chose (for the show) have a different feel, a different look, a different meaning.”

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge, 125 Franklin Street - Sharon Cockrill and Sarah Head met seven years ago and, much to their husbands’ chagrin, soon realized they shared a passion for fiber arts. They had both been creating for years and have now joined forces to create Knit One Weave Too.

Sharon and Sarah enjoy knitting, weaving, felting, spinning and creating hand-tied yarns. They even throw in a little quilting every once in a while. Sarah had been a life-long knitter and Sharon had been crafting and creating for 30 years. They have enjoyed learning from each other as well as learning new skills and techniques.

Ingredients

Ingredients, 100 Strawberry Alley, will feature A. Heron Designs. “Creating beautiful, quirky pieces, in the hopes that someone will hold them dear, will always be one of my motivations. Jewelry has been worn for centuries, and I relish the thought that some of my pieces could stand the test of time. Every bit of the jewelry-smithing process fascinates me, whether it is the pages of sketches that I draw for one special cabochon or a precarious soldering job. Despite all the work, the greatest moment is polishing up a ring or pendant and realizing it was all worth it.”

Mildred & Mable’s

Mildred & Mable’s, 109 Franklin Street, has will have artist, Charlotte Nelms. Charlotte Nelms was born and reared in Oregon however, as a military spouse has lived and continued her art studies all over the North American and European continents. She received her Associate in Arts Degree from City Colleges of Chicago, Europe. Recently, returned from Germany she has now chosen to settle in Clarksville and is excited to portray in her favorite mediums of pastel and watercolor the American landscapes that she loves. She says of her work:
“I enjoy painting in soft pastels on sandpaper. The texture of sandpaper holds fast the many layers I use of brilliant pastel pigment. My style is realistic with a splash of impressionism. I want to portray the peace, play of light and excitement of color found in the natural landscape.

New South Coffee, 110 Franklin Street, will feature Alan Goldstein.  Alan Goldstein has been a professional photographer for over 40 years and has won many awards for his photography: In 1986 Alan was bestowed the honor of Master of Photography by the Professional Photographers of America for his photographic excellence and in 2006 Alan was bestowed the honor of Photographic Craftsman by the Professional Photographers of America for his contributions to the profession of photography though continuing education and the sharing of knowledge with fellow photographers to promote excellence in imagery and business practices. Alan continues to do portraits but is also involved with making fine art images specializing in large wall prints.

The Roxy Regional Theatre

Defined by Wikipedia pumpkin chunkin is defined as “Punkin chunkin (also called Pumpkin Chunkin’ and pumpkin chucking) is the action of hurling a pumpkin in a competition by mechanical means over distances greater than those of other competitors.”

How does 9 year old Ryleigh Welsh define pumpkin chunkin? “I put a pumpkin into slingshot, and pull the cord and it flies WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY up high and SPLATS down on the bullseye – so COOOOOL!”

6 year old Scotty Dean, say, “There’s a catapult. You pick your pumpkin, and give it to the man who is working there. He puts it in the catapult, and you get to yank the rope. And the pumpkin goes FLYING. It was fun!”

Of course there will be pumpkin chunkin – but we will also have the MEGA obstacle course bouncy, all kinds of fun kids games and prizes, cake walk, live music and loads of handcraft vendors for shopping.

And our food can’t be beat! Cooked right there in a large cauldron will be our authentic recipe BRUNSWICK STEW! Get a plate with cornbread and a quart to take home with you too! Or just a hotdog, chips and cotton candy whipped up fresh.All in all – a fantastic way to spend the day with the family. We have something for everyone. Hope to see you there!

The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery

The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery is pleased to present” 4 Perceptions, 4 Generations” work by Bruce Childs, Karen Edgin, Jason R. Scott, and Serhat Tanyolacar. Bruce Childs is Professor Emeritus of the APSU Art Department and Edgin, Scott and Tanyolacar represent three generations of his students.

Edwards Steakhouse

EDWARD’S Steakhouse will feature a book signing by Blakey Bradley.  AUSTIN PEAY FOOTBALL 80 YEARS from 1930-2010 is a book that tells the story, game by game, of the Peay football program from its origin in 1930 to the present 2010.   As you read the book it is hoped you will gain a greater appreciation of Governor football.  The book was written as a fundraiser for Austin Peay Football.

Fleur de Lis

Fleur de Lis will be Spotlighting Maria Drawdy with Sacer & Savive. Sacer and Savive is a custom stenciled and stitched clothing line. Maria designs and customizes each piece to give it a unique and artistic style, and says that “Many of my designs have a biblical or spiritual meaning. We are using the gifts and talents God has given us to tell people about Jesus in a creative way.” You can find her items in several boutiques scattered across the country, and locally at Fleur de Lis. Maria owns this faith based company and resides here in Clarksville.

The Framemaker

The Framemaker proudly presents artist Bruce Childs as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, October  6th, 2011. An opening reception will be held from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit, titled “Urban Open Spaces,” will remain on display at the Framemaker throughout the month of October during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 10:00am-6:00pm).

Childs states, “The idea behind Urban Open Spaces is to give gallery audiences an opportunity to see open spaces of high desert — mountains and the Rio Grande Rift — as pockets of possible refuge for the urban dweller and visitor, whose eyes are conditioned by the built environment.”

In addition to The Framemaker gallery show, Bruce Childs will be simultaneously featured in a group exhibition in the APSU Downtown Gallery.

Hodgepodge

Shana Wooley will be displaying her body of work entitled, “The In-between” at Hodgepodge.  The “everyday” objects were photographed in a way as to either distort them and remove them from their original applications.  The subject matter started out as looking at “forbidden places” or rather, places where one just simply would never create a photograph. Highlighting intimate and sometimes eery parts of everyday life. This series is meant to showcase and highlight the beauty in “things” that we would normally overlook as being “beautiful”.

The Creative Corner @ Hodgepodge will feature Kimberly Santiago’s creative Art Journals, journal kits, and supplies for journals.

Artist Reisa Peters

Getting to know so many of the Clarksville’s local artists has been a true privilege for me since opening ARTifact, an Art & Antique Emporium just shy of 4 years ago.

The artist community is Clarksville is huge, thriving and extrodinairely diverse.  And I love sharing their talents each First Thursday.

But now I am starting a new series for Clarksville Online so you can meet them too, from the comfort of your own home. 

Please give us a brief bio, where you are from and how you started in this field?

I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, but I am married to a man in the military, so for the past 16 years we have been living all over the United States. I have taken this opportunity to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Empire State College, State University of New York and to study with as many artists in every city we have lived in!

I love art! And I have always been drawn to color, it is one of my strongest memories, the color of the light as it lands on my childhood bedroom. The shadows on my mother or father’s face in the evening light as they would tuck me into bed. I want to use color and shadow to create dimension, to make that two-dimensional form feel three-dimensional!

What medium do you use?  How did you decide on this medium?

I have worked in pastel for the past 13 years, and in oil for about a year and a half. I love pastel for it’s vibrancy, and the way you are able to achieve such bold color harmonies.

I love putting the pigment straight on the paper without the use of a brush! It is so freeing.

A lot of people don’t know that pastel has the same pigment that oil paint has, only a different binder holding it together. Therefore, it is a very durable medium.

People call it a chalk, but unless you are talking about the cheap student grade varieties, it is not a chalk at all!!!

Pastels that were painted in the 1800′s by Monet and Cassatt are in better quality than their oil paintings, that have started to crack.

I began to paint in oil because I discovered that people were hesitant to buy anything that had to be framed under glass.

What I love about painting in oil, is not the brush work.  I find it tedious and difficult after not using brushes in pastel for 13 year.  I like to use a palette knife and to apply the paint really thick and make the painting have texture – a very three- dimensional quality. I like to involve the viewer in the process and I want them to touch the painting, not just look at it!

Could you tell us about some of your work?  How will you describe your style?

I would describe my style as impressionistic. I try to keep it loose. I don’t want it to be photo-realistic. My goal is for you to have to stand several feet away for it to make sense. With my pastels, I want there to be beautiful color! I always start with the opposite color from what I want. So if I am painting a red apple, I will paint it green initially, then paint the red over top so the green shows through. This gives the form depth. If I just painted it red it would be flat and boring!

With my oil paintings, I initially use a brush and paint on a thin background layer. Then I pull out the palette knife and just start building up the form like it is a sculpture and I am working my way around it.

I want my art to speak to the viewers. I don’t want them to just say ‘Oh that is pretty’ I want them to love it, be moved by it, or just need it and not know why.

Any influences or anyone you look up to when it comes to your art?

I have always loved the Impressionists, Monet, Cassat, Renoir, Degas. And then two non-Impressionists I have always loved are: Picasso, because everyone knows his later works but he was a very skilled in perspective before he began his Cubism movement; and Sargent, who was a very photo-realistic portrait painter. But his skill level takes my breath away!

Modern painters, I am drawn to Hua Chen. He was the official painter of the 2008 Summer Olympics. He is an incredible figure painter and I think one of todays most talented impressionists.

Where do you show your work?  What is your favorite piece that you have ever made?

My work is currently on display at ARTifacts in  Clarksville, TN; The Hopkinsville Art Guild in Hopkinsville, KY; and the Tennessee Art League in Nashville, TN.

My favorite piece of work I have ever made… I have two right now, one has been my favorite for a couple of years, Serenity, it is a pastel, 18 x 24. (photo above)
The other is a new piece, Explosion of Color, oil, 11 x 14.

ARTifacts Emporium

ARTifacts will be featuring Patsy Dollar & Sharla Adams. 

When asked about her art, here is what Patsy Dollar shared: This year has been very eventful for me as I pursue my art and the expression of it.  I have moved into different mediums of expression and not been as active in others.  This show is titled “Multifaceted Perceptions by the Loose Potter”.  In this presentation I have attempted to show my growth within by presenting art that is as multifaceted as I am.  New examples of Face Pots with more abstractions, and free form faces that peer out at you, and the addition of Crystalline glazes to add depth to the perceptions of art forms and their functionality.  Also this year I am introducing experiments with charcoal and pastel chalks as well as acrylics.   I have also brought 2 dimensional art forms into my experience. 

Sharla Adams is an arts and crafts designer who is a native of Clarksville. She specializes in jewelry design.  She works for the Clarksville Montgomery County School System.  Jewelry started off as a hobby for Sharla and now her goods can be found at Artifacts Emporium, in Strawberry Alley in downtown Clarksville.  Her inspiration is from nature and from art seen while traveling throughout the world. The Framemaker

The Framemaker proudly presents artist Greg Sand as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk . 
Greg Sand is an artist and photographer who explores the issues of existence, time and death. He works primarily with digital photography to produce work that addresses the nature of photography and its role in defining reality. Sand received his BFA in Photography from Austin Peay State University in 2008. He has won the acclaim of both jurors and audiences, winning numerous awards and honors. In 2009, Sand was selected by critic Catherine Edelman and the Griffin Museum of Photography as one of “the most exciting new artists emerging in the world of photography.” Sand currently produces work in Clarksville, Tennessee, and exhibits across the United States.

Greg Sand states, “Remnants is a series about recollection and remembrance. Each ‘remnant’ in the series is composed of three found photos–each from a different point in the subject’s life–that have been cut into strips and woven together to form a portrait of a person who has passed away. Remnants uses cloth as a metaphor for memory.”

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge will feature Miranda Herrick.  Miranda was born in Vicenza, Italy in the 1970’s, an ARMY brat. After returning to the US, she attended eight different schools in four states before her father’s retirement settled her family in Clarksville, TN in the early 1990’s. She started drawing for art’s sake around the age of four. After being restored by her mother’s reassurances from an existential crisis at the age eight, Miranda has spent all of her spare time with a pen in hand.

Miranda received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Austin Peay State University in the fall of 1999. Her studies concentrated on ceramics and drawing. Since that time she has pursued a career in the picture framing industry and the fine art field while also indulging an interest in curating and displaying art objects.

Austin Peay State University President Tim Hall will read from his book about marriage, “The Labor of Love” at 5:30pm at the L & N Train Station, where art historian and quilter Dr. Dixie Webb is also exhibiting her quilts.

The Arts and Heritage Development Council and Montgomery County Historical Society are teaming up to offer this artistic exploration of Clarksville’s heritage as an extra element for First Thursday ArtWalk.

Mildred & Mabel’s

Mildred & Mable’s artist will be Mackenzie Coffman.  Mackenzie is a sophomore at Austin Peay State University double majoring in Art and Business. After winning the Montgomery County District Art Competition, she received the opportunity to meet John Tanner in Jackson, TN. During her freshman year she was accepted in the student art show.  When asked about her art she says, “I absolutely love photography and after I receive my masters in art, I plan to be a published photographer and own a gallery in New York City.”

Rogate’s Boutique

Rogate’s is pleased to present Rachel Ison of Appealing Jewelry Designs.  Favorite jewelry techniques are wire wrapping and wire sculpturing.  I like the way beads, stones and wire come together and enhance each other.”

Train Station Whistle Stop 

Author Billyfrank Morrison will talk about his book on Clarksville through postcards at 5:00pm at the L & N Train Station, where visual artist Jim Hancock is also exhibiting his latest photographs.

 The Arts and Heritage Development Council and Montgomery County Historical Society are teaming up to extend the First Thursday ArtWalk to Clarksville’s historic train station.

Cumberland Winds Woodwind Quintet

 The Quintet consists of Mike Noland on French Horn, Jeanette Zyko on Bassoon, Gary Heagren on Clarinet, Amanda Schmitt on Oboe, and Beth Ryan on Flute.  We all play in the Cumberland Winds community band.  Our quintet can perform at many different functions, and we hope to bring some good listening music to the art walk on September 1st.

An Egg Coddler

Working at an art and antique store has proven to be so much fun for me. It has also proven to be a major learning experience. Several months ago, I started to write a series for Clarksville Online and I never did get that second article out. Reason being that I STILL haven’t found a good answer to the question I ended that first article with.  Not a definitive one anyway, but definitely loads of opinions – each of them slightly different than the other. So, I called a stalemate.

That got the best of me for many months. But now I am refreshed and ready to try this thing again, I call writing. It is a stretch for me – I am not a writer, nor am I comfortable saying I am an expert in any subject. I will say I love to learn more about the items my vendors bring in to sell – both the art and the antiques. The past month, I have had loads of new questions from customers – and it got me to start looking up information online again to give them those answers. I have discovered folks out there obsessed with all kinds of obscure things and the wonderful world of the internet has brought them together. Comforting as it may be to them – I am just amused by it, and enjoy how much they enjoy themselves in turn.

What got me starting on this rant was today. A customer brought a piece up to me…

“What is this?” she asked showing me an egg coddler.

“An egg coddler,” I replied, since I had previously noted the name on the vendor’s tag. “But what is it used for?” she asked.

“To eat the egg” I replied, with more of a question in my tone and not at all  convincing.

Embarrassed, I went straight to the computer and looked it up.

According to a web site dedicated to Egg Coddlers, an egg coddler is “a porcelain or pottery cup with a lid that is used to prepare a dish called, appropriately enough, coddled eggs. Coddled eggs are very much like poached eggs, except that the egg is cooked inside the coddler. The egg(s) are broken into the buttered coddler, and seasonings are added, if desired. The coddler is then closed with the lid and partially immersed in boiling water for a few minutes. When the eggs are cooked to the desired firmness, the coddler is lifted from the boiling water, the lid removed, and breakfast is served, in a lovely decorated dish”

Egg coddlers are not to be confused with the egg cup, which typically has a pedestal on it and no lid. Egg cups are not for cooking, only for serving. (And just as a side note: true collectors of coddlers get a little worked up if you get them confused!)

There are literally hundreds of discontinued patterns on egg coddlers. And since they are still making them today, there may still be hundreds more. You can still get egg coddlers at some of the finer department stores, but I like the collectibles or the vintage ones.

These are fun little collectibles that are often overlooked, but their history and their purpose provide for an unique story.

Kelly Peters of Darling Pottery will also be featured at ARTifacts.  Kelly has been with ARTifacts for several months now, and continues to wonderful pottery with our customers.

Downtown Artist Co-Op

Downtown Artists Co-op will be opening a new exhibit called “Creative Musings”.  The exhibit is a collaboration of four artists:  Cliff Whittaker, Richard Hogan, Gail Meyer. and Dorothy Thomason.  Cliff has spent this spring season putting together a series of 12 large photographs emphasizing the beauty of nature in Rotary Park; Richard Hogan has been working diligently on producing a series of large and beautifully colorful paintings in his “dream-land” style; Gail Meyer is planning to have one of her large “umbrella” paintings as the centerpiece for her work which will be surrounded by a series of new paintings produced specifically for this show; and Dorothy Thomason will have a series of her lifelike watercolor paintings and amazingly detailed scratchboard art.  As usual, the reception begins at 5:00 p.m. at the DAC gallery and we plan to have a fun evening.

The Framemaker

The Framemaker proudly presents an exhibit by artist Jared Lee Cleghorn as part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk. An opening reception will be held on from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011.

Jared Lee Cleghorn was born in California and currently lives and works in Clarksville, Tenn. He received a bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from Austin Peay State University. Jared’s exhibit, entitled, “Cosmographia,” is a series of collages influenced by the his interest in science. Jared states, “In this series I wanted to liberate the wonderful splendor and mysticism of science by expressing its ideas and findings through works of art.”

Hodgepodge

Hodgepodge will feature four artists showing their work publicy for the first time.  Join us to meet the artists, Martha Fydenkevez, the matriarch; Vicky Clinard, her daughter; and great-grandsons, Austin Rittenberry and Zachary Clinard.  It’s a family art affair!

Ingredients will hosting Heather Noble of Covered with Icing and Carol and Kalena of KC’s Handcrafted Designs: The heart is in the hands. Heather has taken classes with some of the most sought after instructors in the business including Roland Mesnier, the White House pastry chef; Michelle Bommarito, Bronwen Weber, Lauren Kitchens, The Sweet Southern Ladies, and others seen on the Food Network and TLC. She is turning out wonderful custom specialty cakes and wedding cakes all over the greater Nashville area, with several per month in Clarksville.

Carol and Kalena are KC’s Handcrafted Designs and they create and quill handmade greeting cards, jewelry, invitations, announcements and other special order items. Their mission is to put heart into everything they do with their hands. The Austin Peay Downtown Gallery presents “Light Works: An Ongoing Tradition of Photography at APSU” featuring the works of Susan Bryant, Professor, Lisa Cook, B.F.A 1986, Monica Quattrochio, B.F.A. 1998, and Nikki Romero, B.F.A. 2008. The exhibition runs through May 28th.

ARTifacts Emporium

Featured at ARTifacts are Rebecca Sower & Bob Williams.  Rebecca has long been a collector of all things lovingly worn by time.  For many years she has been incorporating these found items into her artwork and designs.  All sorts of treasures, from vintage papers to handcrafted journals to yesterday’s treasures, can be found at Rebecca’s ARTifacts space.

 Bob Williams builds “shaker” style furniture of his own design or yours. Benches are his favorite things to build but tables and other pieces are available on order. We have se pieces in the booth along with se other fun collectables.

Downtown Artist Co-Op

DAC’s upcoming May exhibition: FIVE women artists will exhibit recent artwork on the FIFTH day of the FIFTH month at the FIFTH hour PM at our DAC Gallery in historic downtown Clarksville. Along with DAC member artist and show curator Peggy Bonnington, we will feature recent work of four other talented local artists: Leigh Averitt-Nepurud, Jennifer Ford, Miranda Herrick and Clare Coyle Taylor.

The Framemaker

 The Framemaker is proud to present work by Bettye Shely Holte (BeShe), APSU professor emerita. Before retiring from the university in 2006, Bettye Holte served as curator of the campus art galleries and permanent art collection. Her work can be found in public and private collections in the United States and abroad. For this exhibit, entitled, “Flights of Fancy,” Bettye explores the owl motif in miniature format, based on ACEOs (Art Cards, Editions and Originals), a movement that is an offshoot of ATC (Artist Trading Cards).

Hodgepodge

Paige King, at Hodgepodge, is looking forward to hosting Konrad Hack on May 5^th.  Konrad works I a variety of media, but most of his work for this show will be drawings.

L&N Train Station

Historian, Dr. Minoa Uffelman, will talk about life in the turn-of-the-century South at 5:30pm at the L & N Train Station, where visual artist Patsy Sharpe is also exhibiting her latest paintings.. The Arts and Heritage Development Council and Montgomery County Historical Society are teaming up to offer this artistic exploration of historic Clarksville as an extra element for First Thursday ArtWalk.

The Roxy Regional Theatre’s Peg Harvill Gallery

The Roxy Regional Theatre’s Peg Harvill Gallery will feature the work of photographic artist Rhonda Taylor.  After checking out Taylor’s work, stick around for the 7:00pm performance of the powerful musical THE CIVIL WAR, “an emotional journey” of the most difficult test our nation has ever endured.

Rogate’s Boutique

Eunice Kern is the featured artist at Rogate’s this Thursday, -May 5^th.  Eunice designs and hand paints silk scarves .  Each scarf is an original design hand painted in sophisticated colors that merge into flowing abstracts or more defined designs.
