And sometimes, whether you believe in your Higher Power as God above or by some other name, you have to reflect on the moment and ask yourself ‘which path do I choose?’

This story is not about self promotion, so please do not take it that way. I write this while I am filled with the spirit and knowing that I have helped a Family in need. That in and of itself is worth more than any commission check in my humble opinion.

Like many Realtors who work on harnessing the power of the internet I find that the spam email I receive is a bit large. Going through this on the road and on the blackberry is just not possible so I delete anything that looks close to it and wait till I get to the office or home to give further inspection.

Before I go any further, let me go back in time to Monday afternoon here in Clarksville. It was a beautiful evening to say the least and Pam and I were out back discussing how we wanted to improve our outdoor living area as well as enjoying our Koi in the ponds. We continually heard sirens and horns going off across the woods from us. I looked up and noticed a black, billowing cloud coming from the distance. I knew that something was on fire but figured it was a brush fire got out of hand and went on about my business.

Step forward to about an hour ago. I just got home and said goodbye to Pam as she was headed to the office to write up an offer for some clients. Went to my email to separate the ‘wheat from the chafe’ and noticed one that was titled ‘Rental Properties Available’. I opened it and read the plight of a Family in need. Again, like most who market their services via the internet the first thing I thought was just another scammer but I went on.

Something about the way it was written told me that this did not come from Africa or wherever those folks are that want to give us a million dollars and buy every property in town. Anyway, while many Realtors don’t care to mess with rental properties other than to pass off to a rental agency I felt the urgency in the text and figured I would run a search with the information given – NOTHING.

I ran using different parameters and happened upon a home that I had inquired about for yet another couple a couple months prior. The home was not available back then and was not sure if it was available now, but it met the schools and the area. The young lady had left a number so I called to see what I could do to assist (if anything) and to get some more information.

As she answered, I could hear the stress in her voice and knew immediately that the rental request was sincere. We spoke for a few moments and she mentioned what had happened. I told her that I was sorry for the loss and asked her where and when it occurred. Okay, by now you either know what happened or are wondering what the heck he is talking about. Well, as it was, the black billowing cloud that Pam and I had noticed in the distance was not a brush fire, but rather the hopes and dreams of a young Army Family going up in flames.

Bought only a couple months prior the Family had spent time renovating the property prior to their PCS to Fort Campbell this month. Pam and I were not the agents for either party nor do I know how it came about that they contacted Pam and I but I knew after speaking with her that I had to help this Family and had to do so in a hurry.

Thanks to many days and nights of interacting with other agents within Clarksville and surrounding communities, we have built a great network. The first order of business was to send out a text via Twitter and then onto Facebook. Even then, the home I mentioned before kept coming to mind, but I still pressed.

Within an instant of my last network blast my phone rang and it was the Realtor and owner of the property I had inquired about for a couple months past. She told me that the property was available now and went on to describe some last minute items that needed to be done. I let her finish and then told the story and told her that I knew that God had put this task before me. She knew exactly the home I was speaking of and said that her heart had gone out to the young couple as well. At that point I asked her if it would be alright should I give her number to the couple so that they could work direct as time was of the essence. She agreed and said she would gladly pay a referral should this work out – I simply stated that was not necessary.

I called the couple back and discussed the home again with them. They had thought about what I had said and agreed that if the home was available it would meet every aspect but size that they needed. They thanked me and I told them to call on us. I truly hope that all works out for them and that they can rebuild their dreams soon.

I know that it is customary for a referral fee to be given, and would not be surprised if the listing agent/owner did so, but I will simply turn it into a gift card from Lowes for this couple.

Sorry for the long story, but I felt I must share with you all. The Lord above works in mysterious ways – we all know this. Sometimes you just know was right is.

Football ignites the headlines already. The season starts well before baseball season is over – it’s already a headline catcher. Football coaches at every level of the sport, whether high school or professional, are being reminded that there is a restriction on religious activities that coaches can promote with the team. The Supreme Court stated that a “school district has a constitutional right to protect students from religious coercion…”

Some coaches have fueled the flames of controversy by defying the law and the court. One Tennessee High School coach is pushing the envelope when he stated to the Tennessean, “Every day when we finish practice, we take a knee, bow our heads and say the Lord’s Prayer at practice …” and before each game I tell them to pray for themselves and their teammates.

Defying the courts is an unwise decision and there is a price in doing so by coaches or anyone. Such religious practices have been ruled out of bounds by the courts. A football coach job description doesn’t include religious activities. Coaches in high schools are not exempt from the law; ignoring court rulings is hazardous to a coaching career. The courts’ interpretation and application of this ruling only applies to public schools and does not extend to parochial schools.

It’s patriotic, and American, to call such violations to the attention of school administrators and seek redress in such situations. The court ruling acknowledges that. There is a proper time and place for religious activities. As I understand it, a football coach can observe the rules by simply announcing there will be a moment of silence by the team and not making any faith-based comments.

The following is a salute to a fallen veteran of the Vietnam War. In honoring his past exploits and his passing, honor is given at once to all who have worn, are now wearing, and will wear the uniforms of US Military Services. Rest now, Brother. Day is done.

You’re an 19-year-old kid. You’re critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley, November 14, 1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam. Your infantry unit is outnumbered eight to one, and the enemy fire is so intense from 100 or 200 yards away that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in.

You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you’re not getting out. Your family is half-way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you’ll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.

Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn’t seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.

Ed Freeman is coming for you. He’s not Medi-Vac, so it’s not his job, but he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.

He’s coming anyway.

And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.

Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.
And, he kept coming back…. 13 more times….. And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.

In 2009, we have a favorable wind of renewal available to re-establish virtues, moral principles, and moral quality to our government at all levels. In foreign policy let us be done with torture, rendition and the deliberate misleading of the public in the guise of justifying action that leads to placing our men and women in uniform unnecessarily in harm’s way and demolishing governments of other nations. Let this year be the year to bury the order of pre-emptive military intervention against what we perceive as nefarious nations.

At the community level, in Tennessee, let’s be done with partisan political warfare that is paralyzing and polarizing our public life.

In honesty, renewal and positive change change will not be achieved in 90 days, or Obama’s first hundred days. It will take time to lead our nation and renew the concept of common good over individual gain and self-interest at every level of our lives, personally and nationally.

The wisdon of President Obama is appropriate here when he warned us that the cure for our economic plight will take months adding up to years. Our political representatives with our prayerful support and suggestions are capable of serious reform in congressional ethics. National and personal changes can be substantial rather than cosmetic.

In our community and the nation, we are eager and in anticipation of a new tone and mature new way of practically meeting real needs. Honesty and transparency are moral values that we cherish and treasure. These qualities can be delivered by our city, state and national government. Even when the new is bad or calls for discipline in living and sacrifice, we must be receptive and transparent.

In this year we have the opportunity to refresh and renew core demonstrated principles. Politicians who violate our moral principles and laws must answer and be accountable for their deeds. No slap on the wrist for such behavior. Bribery, fraud and tax evasion in a reform government will be dealt with harshly, to include prison terms. The recent politicians — Republican and Democratic — Duke Cunningham, Tom Delay, William Jefferson, Mark Foley for their crimes are examples of the law of accountability at work.

Renewal for us personally is to rededicate ourselves to democratic principles; let’s bury the nefarious partisanship. Cooperation instead of partisan argument and resentment will precipitate renewal.

For Clarksville, that date was packed with activities to draw the public’s attention: the Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society Regional Conference at APSU, and the 2009 Miss Black Clarksville Beauty Pageant were also held that day. The debut of the American Model Boot Camp Showcase proved to be an equally compelling and stunning affair.

AMBC models share a pose

The Saturday night model showcase event was like no other as it demonstrated that beauty comes from within. There were no ugly ducklings in this showcase. Only winners, on every front. This project is the personal brainchild of Aisha Wilson and EboniStephens Model and Video Agency.

“Love Yourself 1st” is the finale of a reality show documentary of the American Model Boot Camp, an intense self analysis and development modeling program that seeks to bolster and enable young people considering modeling and those who are often facing difficult challenges in their lives and dares them to excel in personal achievements and succeed in the modeling industry.

Counseling and training in personal development and responsibility, proper etiquette, professional auditioning and interviewing skills, photography pose training, runway coaching and public speaking give encouragement to the hopefuls as they progress thru the showcase development process. The skills needed to conquer these traits are also important life skills that are essential to everyday living and thus reinforce the drive, initiation and self-determination which are required for success in fashion and modeling.

High profile model ‘Toccara’ highlighted a late afternoon ‘Red Carpet’ preliminary event at the Riverview Inn. The AMBC models and members of the general public had the opportunity to meet ‘Toccara’ and ask her questions about the modeling industry, her career and her experiences, and the specifics involved as a ‘plus-sized’ model.

For more than an hour, from 3 p.m. til almost 4:30 p.m., she sat with AMBC “Love Yourself 1st’ model participants and their guests in the ballroom and shared her experiences and insights into the modeling and fashion industries. She told young aspirants that “You have to have a thick skin because you’re going to told ‘No’.” She related that she went a Size 4 to Size 14 in a couple years. “I had never had to consider the world of Plus Size Modeling and suddenly that was my world.” Toccara also spoke of her experiences on America’s Next Top Model. She was eliminated in the seventh round. “I was one of the first ‘plus size’ model contestants on America’s Next Top Model.

"Love Yourself" contestants listen as 'Toccara' answers question

She spoke of the changing attitudes of Plus-Size fashion modeling. She said that Plus-Size modeling is from a Size 12 to 16 or 18. When asked how modeling has changed her, Toccara said that she’s still the same person she’s always been. “I’ve never been asked to lose weight.” She said models today are encouraged to eat healthy and there is more attention within the industry to see that they follow a healthy lifestyle. Binge eating and anoxeria are not given a knowing ‘nod and a wink’ in today’s fashion world. She also spoke about the personal strengths which any successful model must develop in the pursuit of a successful career.

‘Toccara’ spoke of the possible pitfalls that can befall newbies as they attempt to make their way in the industry. She fielded several questions about high profile business enterprise Tyra Banks, who ‘Toccara’ describes as a focused business executive running a successful business. She sees Tyra as a professional, personable entity focused on her business enterprise who values her time and exposure.

Young admirers gather round 'Toccara.'

The ‘Red Carpet’ preliminary focused on an in-group question-answer session with ‘Toccara’ and photo opportunity for local area businesses connected to the fashion showcase later in the evening. ‘Dress It Up” Shoes and Fashion presented her with a complimentary alligator handbag and shoe gift set, which she graciously posed with for their photo. ‘Toccara proved to be a strong draw for local youth groups which nurture development, promotion and sustaining self-esteem and motivation for success in young people. The ‘Red Carpet’ photo session had to be extended to accommodate all those wishing to have their picture taken with ‘Toccara.’

The Riverview Inn’s ballroom area was the hub of activity for the one-day fashion extravaganza. From being the staging place for the Red Carpet photo event to vendors setting up for the evening’s extravaganza, the ballroom level was awash in a sea of people coming and going. Accessory suppliers featuring gowns, handbags, shoes, casual wear tops, hair accessories, skincare, media consulting and representation and photography services were all on display as the evening’s highlight event approached its debut hour.

Higher Level Hair Studio and Queen City Beauty College spokesperson talks about preparations for the showcase

Young people from the Greater Clarksville area were given ’star treatment’ by the professionals of Higher Level Hair Studio, along with the staff of Queen City Beauty and Barber College for hair and make-up. Students from area high schools, including Fort Campbell, Northwest, Kenwood and Rossview participated in the showcase.

As the evening’s showcase progressed the viewing audience was dazzled with the visual transformations which were displayed by the models, whom they knew as their friends and family members. These newly awakened beauties took command of the runway and presented Clarksville with a parade of views and looks that had not previously been heralded as being a part of the community fabric.

Spanish Fly Trendy Fashions displays accessories

A model showcase and fashion show does not happen singlehandedly. The talents and contributions of many people combine to make the event successful. Along with fashions for all occasions and activities, there is make-up and hairstyling needs to contend with as well.

The “Love Yourself 1st’ Showcase benefited from a network of supporters that made all these concerns secondary to the overall success of the showcase. Sportswear, casualwear, formal wear, dazzling glamour and sparkle footwear were presented by the modeling hopefuls as they took their turns on the catwalk.

The evening’s entertainment included an opening Braoadway-styled dance routine, “Circus,” by Mannequin’s models and Rolling Town Records’ new artist, ‘Gift’ sang a song from his debut CD. Ms Treva Gordon served as the mistress of ceremony hostess and kept the production moving forward and engaging the audience.

Aspiring model takes her turn in gown on the catwalk

At one interlude in the proceedings, there was an impromptu parade of the fashionably attired among the audience. Sponsors were called upon along with audience locals who had taken particular care to ‘dress for the event’ to show off their own sense of fashion and style. This was very well received from the audience.

However the true stars of the evening were the AMBC “Love Yourself 1st” models themselves. In the glamour and formal wear segment, the transformation of make-up, hair and clothing styles was completely breathtaking. Poise, style and attitude took center stage as the young hopefuls literally commanded the catwalk showcasing styles of Favor of Fashions, The Hattitude, What A Woman Wants, 316 Fashions, Spanish Fly Trendy Fashions, Dress It Up Shoes and Fashion, and Cosmos Southern.

A few words directed to a friend, neighbor or family member or even an adored pet, can release a resevoir of strength within . Normally, these are words of appreciation and acknoledgement.

At Fort Leonard Wood, the Army’s largest basic and advanced training post, I served with command leaders to include hundreds of drill sergeants of all ranks. I served, too, commanders that I would have followed into combat at any time and any place. How did these men and women impress me and receive my loyalty? They were leaders trained in reassuring and encouraging others. They elicited a sense of self with new recruits, NCOs and officers with a reassuring word.

On Inauguration day I followed my daily routine of exercising at the Athletic Club. As my legs moved my mind was also active as I listened and watched President Obama give his address. His speech captivated and motivated me. before I realized it, I had exceeded my goal at the treadmill of 50 minutes. This awesome speech motivated me; his words somehow improved my power of endurance.

Reassuring spoken words renew and enable us to accept and successfully overcome the challenges of daily living. One source of such reassurance is to be found in the Bible, a book on the nature of God and mankind. In what we call the Old Testament, there is in Zechariah 3:17 words that lifted my morale. This verse is a potent message:

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to see. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he shall rejoice over you with singing.”

On this day the words “delight” and “rejoice” from the verse give me confidence. Think of it and let this thought massage you spiritually: we are giving to the Almighty delight and our attitude and behavior cause the Almighty to rejoice.

Meditating on this verse fortifies and releases the spiritual resources. in all of us. Focusing upon these words will enable us to successfully overcome daily challenges and release inner strength to face obstacles honestly and bravely.

Pamela Frueh, as she pondered these words, wrote:

“God delights in me. I think of the delight I feel when my children and grandchildren, the powerful heart-stopping, breath-catching delight that seems to be part of unconditional love … I am God’s child, awed by God’s love.”

Thought for the day:

God delights in me — and in you. Repeat these words frequently and experience a healthier outlook.

History. On its own, it’s not a very exciting word. However this past weekend, February 28th, saw HISTORY given star power treatment at Austin Peay State University as the Theta Delta Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society and the university’s History and Philosophy Department sponsored the 2009 Regional Conference.

Austin Peay’s Theta Delta Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta National Honor Society hosted the 2009 Regional Conference this past Saturday at Austin Peay State University.

At the Registration Table, attendees picked up their packets.

The conference provided both undergraduate and graduate students of history with the opportunity to gain valuable experience by presenting their ideas in a friendly academic setting. Topics from a broad range of subjects including regional, American and non-American topics were welcome. Films and documentaries produced by the students were also accepted.

The Morgan Center was the hosting site for the one-day event which saw sixty students from fourteen universities and colleges give presentations of such diverse topics as Women’s History, Rome and Byzantine, Indian Warfare and Removal, Religion and Race, Gender in the South, Barbary Pirates, the American Revolution, WWI, Reform and Regulation, WWII Dilemmas on the Homefront, Issues of Religion through the Ages, Struggle for Independence and Identity, US Military in Nontraditio0nal Roles, American Revolution: Sea Battles, Labor and Economy in Nazi Germany, “Blues, Baseball and Black Male Identity,” Post WWII US Politics, and American Influence Overseas: Two Perspectives, Direct and Policy.

There were two roundtable events, the TSU Senior Projects and the MTSU Recent Projects in Public History. Additionally, there was a panel session of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.

Group discussions followed panel presentations

Opening with a 7:30 AM registration start time, the Morgan Center was abuzz with presenters and attendees picking up credentials and sampling the breakfast buffet tables set out on the third floor. Their energy and buzz belied the quiet of the rest of the building during the early Saturday morning calm. The early morning session panels covered the subject areas of Women’s History, Rome and Byzantine, Indian Warfare and Removal, Religion and Race, Gender in the South, and the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society panel.

As we are not yet capable of self-cloning-on-demand, this writer was not able to sit in on every panel group.
10:20 a.m.: Attending Session II Panel 13: Issues of Religion through the Ages presentations.

Gregory Bearringer, David Lipscomb University, third from left, responds to a question from a fellow Panel 13 presenter

Currently attending Monasticism, Matthew Paris and the Historical Tradition Traditions of St. Albans by Gregory Bearringer of Lipscomb University:

Bearringer details the development of the monastic life and the personality of monks, their impact on French education and religious dogma in French upper society. Paris is denoted as having a disdain for the French, even its nobility, reflecting his English origin and relation with Henry III, despite his being dependent upon that same nobility for its gracious giving to the monastery for its survival and continuation.

Body, Soul and Spirit: Origen and Biblical Interpretation in the Third Century by Ben Malone, MTSU:

Ben Malone, MTSU, talks about "Body, Soul, and Spirit: Origen and Biblical Interpretation in the 3rd Century"

Origen was born in Alexandria, a metropolitan center of education, religious diversity as Christianity, Judaism and Muslim centers were located there. He undertook a detailed study of the Bible, writing about several books of the Bible. Origen was Christian in his beliefs, devotion and practice of religious faith, notwithstanding his conflicts with the hierarchy of the Early Christian Church. Malone further explains that Origen was essential to the development and understanding of the use of allegorical interpretation of biblical passages. He was the first Christian writer to utilize the allegorical interpretation of the Bible, a practice which was already in wide use in studies of Judaism and Islamic texts.

“Self, Soul, and Support: English Women Writers on Religion and Women’s Education 1670-1710″ by Tammy Prater, University of Memphis:

Tammy Prater, Univ. of Memphis, gives her presentation before Panel 13 attendees

Education of women was not a widely supported construct of 17th century English society. Women were only expected to be pious, chaste and mothers and good housekeepers. Education, when it was bestowed upon women, was directed at their being able to read the Bible but not how to write nor other elements of full education. “Custom is the tyrant behind all ignorance and deprivations of women.

Comments: Keith Bates, Union University, Moderator.

Dr. Keith Bates, Univ. of Memphis, comments of the Panel 13 presentations

The presentation questions the role of women in 17th Century England and society. Women were seen as property more so than an equal part of society, the male dominance being the prevailing view of the times. Exposes the fallacies of the view of women as inferior and subordinate to men. An educated women is actually a better helpmate to her husband.

Origen saw himself as a more elitist Christian, regarding the average churchgoer as not being sufficiently devoted to the Church. He despised people coming to Church to socialize and be seen, rather than gain any further insight into their duties and responsibilities to God and the Church. He felt this was the prevailing reason for too many churchgoers of his day, especially the merchant class and noblemen. He was seen as a heretic and even persecuted by the Church. His allegorical interpretation of biblical text was not widely accepted during his lifetime.

Humor in Uniform is a favorite section in the Reader’s Digest. Having served as a soldier and Army Chaplain, for 20 years, in time of peac and for two years of war in Vietnam, I appreciate recognition given our soldiers, even if its humorous.Being rather serious and solemn by nature, I have a psychological need for entertainment, especially humor. I meet this need for balance for jocularity by selecting cheerful TV programs to watch while exercising at the Athletic Club. When I get there early enough, I’ll watch my all time favorite, M.A.S.H.

For my own benefit, as well as that of listeners, when I give a homily at the Unitarian Church, I introduce the message with a humorous story. I find this is an effective means of gaining the attention of the congregation. It also gives me some sense of calmness and peace of mind.

In one of my speaking engagement s at the Church, I used the following humorous story:

“A middle aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing God, she asked “Is my time up?”

“No, you have another 43 years, two months and eight days to live,” God said.

After the woman recovered, she decided that if she had that much time left, she was going to make the most of it.

She went to the hairdresser for a permanent and color rinse. Then she returned to the hospital for liposuction, a facelift and a tummy tuck.

After her last operation, she left the hospital. While crossing the street she was hit by a truck and killed.

When the woman got to heaven, she told God: “I thought you said I had another 40 years to live. Why didn’t you pull me from the path of the truck?”

God just shrugged. “I didn’t recognize you.”

– Norbert Robben, Topeka, Kansas

I recommend joining us in finding and regaining humor today. Exercise your funny bone often.

Despite the budget shortfall and other major problems that the Tennessee state legislature must face, anti-gay and other “morality” bills have found their way into consideration by lawmakers. Despite a shortage of couples and singles willing to adopt, a new bill, HB 0605/*SB 0078, the companion bills from Senator Paul Stanley’s (R-Cordova) and Rep. John Deberry (R-Memphis), would deny adoption of a minor to anyone who’s in a sexual relationship other than being legally married.

This isn’t the first time they’ve attempted such legislation, either. Senator Stanley and Rep. John Deberry were the same people who filed a more strictly anti-gay adoption bill last year, which failed. They also had a similar bill which would prevent unmarried opposite-sex couples from adopting. It foundered as well. This new bill is a combination of both of the previous bills.

Apparently, not only do bad ideas come from the same legislators, but the same bad ideas come from the same legislators. If it doesn’t pass the first time, then try, try, again. One doesn’t have to stretch the imagination too far to observe the visceral and sensitive nature of same-sex relationships and homosexuality in general. Just what do they hope to accomplish?

They have failed to establish — at any level — whether or not such bills are even needed. Those on both sides of the issue will come down with passionate and strong opinions. Sometimes the right questions aren’t asked. Facts, however, are often left in the sidelines.

One such example of sidelining facts for the sake of opinions was seen this past week when Tara Greene, a Democrat from Sumner County, was to join a scheduled appointment with her state senator, Diane Black (R-Gallatin). She was to meet with Senator Black on Advancing Equality Day on the Hill, sponsored by the Tennessee Equality Project. The day was set aside for members of TEP and affected constituents to visit with state legislators and discuss issues important to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.

Greene was informed the night before their appointment that Senator Black had abruptly canceled the meeting. When asked, Black confirmed that she did indeed cancel the meeting which was to include discussion about Sen. Stanley’s adoption bill. In an email, Black wrote:

“This is a question of what is best for the child who is in the state’s custody and I will not be moved from my position that a child has a better chance of growing up healthy in a traditional home with a mother and a father. Those who have already had a tough break in life, like those children in state custody, should have every opportunity possible to be placed in an optimal family setting. The traditional nuclear family is still that setting.”

She said she did meet with the group briefly despite the cancellation, and that they “agreed to disagree.”

The account was told a little differently by Greene, who explained that she and her group arrived at Black’s office at the scheduled time despite Black’s cancellation, and that Black met with them for five minutes. Black allegedly insisted that they “agree to disagree” before relenting to the brief meeting.

Unfortunately, many Tennesseans (and it seems, some legislators) are unaware of not only the process that adoptive parents must go through, but they’re equally unaware of the the highly-trained professionals who work with each of our children in state’s custody to help them be placed into safe, loving homes. Equally distressing is the fact that few activists on either side even bother to talk with people who are actually in the field.

When looking for specific numbers of adoption-ready children in the state of Tennessee, it was time to go straight to the source. Calista Doll, a Communications official with the state’s Department of Children’s Services, said that as of January 1, 2009, there are currently 7,683 children in the state’s custody. “Of those,” she said, “914 are in full guardianship…[with] 330 who do not have a permanent family identified.”

When asked if those numbers are similar to a month-by-month analysis, she indicated that the numbers do fluctuate but it’s “pretty consistent.” Doll also explained that “full guardianship” means that the birth parents no longer have any legal claim to the child.

Hard fact number one: there’s already a shortage of single adults and couples who are willing to adopt children. As of January 1st, there are over three hundred children who are still waiting just to be considered by a prospective parent or parents to be adopted. Senators Black and Stanley, along with Rep. DeBerry want to actually reduce the numbers of parents who are considered to adopt children. Good luck with explaining that to the kids who are left to bouncing around group homes and foster care.

First and foremost, it’s the children that would be affected by a potential law that would prevent them from being adopted by those who are in cohabiting relationships (same- or opposite-sex). To hear it told by those who advocate for such asinine laws, one would think that children are dispensed to parents like a hamburger through a drive through window with diapers in tow. In fact, quite the opposite is true.

Hard fact number two: Tennessee already has a very restrictive adoption policy in place. To be even considered as an adoptive parent, a single adult or couple must go through an arduous and time-consuming process.

They must first complete a parent preparation class called “PATH” — Parents as Tender Healers. PATH, according to the DCS website, is a 30-hour education and self-assessment process:

“It explores communications styles. It helps families understand the feelings of grief and the loss that children can experience. It helps identify family strengths. The process also helps adults identify the child they feel that they can most successfully parent.”

Sandy Bradley, a social worker in Clarksville, explained that PATH is a one night per week class that really helps singles and couples be properly prepared to bring foster children into their homes.

Bradley said that the next step is to have a home study, which involves looking into their financial status, every room of the home, living conditions, and interviewing character witnesses and family members.

Along with the home study, a thorough background check is conducted, which was described by Doll, and confirmed by Bradley, as a “full FBI investigation.” The background check goes through credit, criminal, and past associations. In most cases, even a misdemeanor can prevent a couple or individual from fostering. A drug test is also conducted. All adults over 18 who live in the household must undergo similar background checks.

Finally, the family must have served as a foster parent for six months before adoption can be considered. “The social worker has the most weight on how a child is placed in a home,” Bradley said. She explained that each child is matched with the home that is best for that child. “There’s a local same-sex couple that has two beautiful biracial babies, and they’re thriving.”

Hard fact number three: the authors and supporters of this bill clearly believe that the state is better equipped to care for children than loving, nurturing parents who happen to be unmarried or gay.

I’ll never imagine what Senator Stanley and Rep. DeBerry hope to accomplish, especially knowing that these trained professionals do all they can to ensure that children are placed in the best homes. When asked if there was a shortage of parents to adopt, Bradley answered emphatically. “Absolutely. Especially for older children.”

Why do some members of our state’s legislature want to add to an already difficult adoption process, and keep more children in state custody? Clearly, they ignore the very clear reality that our DCS and social workers are already tasked with this thankless task, and it’s completely absurd to make it even more difficult.

State Senator Tim Barnes and District 67 Representative Joe Pitts have already confirmed that they will not support this bill. The bill, HB 0605/*SB 0078, should be completely and soundly rejected.

One of my goals in aging is to keep my mind alert. I devote a portion of each day to acuity. To be mentally keen is a challenge.

To achieve this goal I discipline myself in reading, writing, and thoughtfulness. My first activity of each day, after walking our pet, Cassie, is to read the daily devotional from The Upper Room. It’s a spiritual, mental and psychological lift.

I budget time to read the local paper. At the Athletic Club I often read while on the treadmill. That’s when I get started reading the weekly publication of Newsweek.

In addition to reading, I find the evening news stimulating ; it often precipitates brain waves that result in sharpening the mind.

In the last year, I become an MSNBC enthusiast, follower and zealot. This soundly produced reporting ogf the news and intelligent interpretation of the news is a source of fresh prespective on national events.

The three major commentators, who speak with eloquence and authority, are Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman, And Rachel Maddow. For me, they are mainstreams of integrity. It comes across to me that they thoroughly prepare and research their part on MSNBC news. Their presentations offer intellectual insights to us listeners.

For a gripping version of the daily news, I become glued to MSNBC. For night after night of a penetrating analysis of the news that will keep your attention, tune in to (Clarksville cable) channel 49 from 7-9 p.m.

Their commentaries, for me follow in the proud tradition of Walter Cronkite in accurately and conscientiously presenting the news. MSNBC is one of my sources of mental alertness and inspiration.

Only a few more weeks and our trees will be budding with new leaves for the year 2009. It is fascinating to watch their transformation in the spring. This budding will be swiftly followed with out brilliantly colored songbirds building their nests among the newly sprung to life branches of the trees. The trees closest to the house will be occupied first, trees that enhance our lawns and the countryside.

In building our house six years ago, we had regular contractors for the project. We went the mile and invested thousands of dollars in the lawn and yard. We hired Tim, a professional landscaper, to plant shrubbery, sod and trees.

For us an appealing and robust lawn was a priority for the property. In childhood, I recall climbing, scaling the robust trees that grew on grandpa’s farm in the Ozarks of Missouri. I recall too climbing the persimmon tree to retrieve the ripened fruit for a snack. My cousin Leroy example emboldened me to climb to the highest branches.

Now, after six years of growth, by our own selection of trees, we congratulate ourselves for investing and improving our property. Our trees include the ever beautiful cherry trees, river birches, maple and crepe myrtle. I am already anticipating with joy the pink blossoms of the cherry trees. These wondrous trees that we have planted are one of the joys of life. They add monetary value to our property, but also brighten our lives. They are a source of considerable psychological benefit.

Our wondrous trees provide us spiritual encouragements. From observing them year-round we can find a source of spiritual nourishment. In The Upper Room, a devotional by Teresa describes how she was blessed spiritually by a tree. Here is the narrative:

The Weight of Bitterness

Read Ephesians 4:25-5:2

“See to it that no fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and through it may become defiled.” ~~ Hebrews 12:15 (NRSV)

Twenty years ago the pine tree in our front yard was a tiny sapling that needed a ring of bricks to protect it from being trodden underfoot. Now it shades our house. During a recent winter storm, however, its lower branches swept the ground under the weight of ice and snow.

That weighted tree was a picture of the Christian I used to be. For years I allowed the weight of abuse when I was a child and the death of my mother when I was in high school to sap my strength and keep me from growing in faith. I allowed anger and resentment to grow into bitterness. Instead of raising my face up in praise to God who uses our trials for good, I doubted my heavenly father’s goodness.

When the sun finally melted the ice and snow, our pine tree stood just as tall and mighty as before the storm. Unlike a tree, we can choose how we will respond to painful circumstances. We can choose to live under the weight of bitterness, or we can allow God’s love to melt away the ice so we can stand tall. Bitterness can rob us of knowledge of God’s presence. Remaining open to Good and trusting God’s never-ending love bring great strength and deep joy.

Her prayer, inspired by the pine tree, reads:

Prayer: Heavenly Father, free us from any bitterness that remains in our heart. Amen.

Her thought, also inspired by the pine tree, reads:

God offers us relief from the weight of bitterness.

~~ Teresa Dickhoner, Ohio

The trees will be bursting forth with new life soon. As you watch them excel in their development, think and meditate on their spiritual significance.

Annually I receive a letter from the IRS concerning the previous year’s filing. These letters and mini-audits precipitate anxiety, additional work by my CPA, and a modest fee. This year was an exception, though. The letter came, but I greeted it with acceptance instead of anxiety. Over the years, I have discovered the IRS to be reasonable in regard to my personal finances. I recognized, too, that this organization for accountability is unpopular, even though it provides an indispensable service.

The IRS reaches out with its policy of accountability to individuals, businesses, organizations and even places of worship. In the case of the latter, I read about their interest with the Kenneth Copeland Ministries of television fame. The IRA has initiated an investigation of their alleged abuse of tax exemption.

The Kenneth Copeland Ministries is in a controversy with the IRS over the use of $3.6 million jet they own. The Copeland organization is being denied tax-exempt status for this jet.

The application to receive the exemption requires groups to submit a list of salaries, and Kenneth Copeland failed to disclose the compensation of the Director, said Jeffrey D. Law, Tarrant County’s chief appraiser.

Televangelists have come under fire recently for lavish lifestyles, and the Copeland ministry also failed to provide spending data after U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)asked Copeland and other ministers to provide financial information as part of an inquiry into their finances.

The ministry said last year that it owned five aircraft including one valued at $17.5 million. Copeland’s organization, also known as Eagle Mountain International Church, admitted to allowing personal use of the aircraft 10% of the time, though it claims individuals are charged for this use.

After that initial investigation, the church said it would cooperate with the IRS should that agency undertake a church tax inquiry.

As I read the inventory of jets in their fleet, I asked myself “How many aircraft do they need and where is the money coming from for their purchase and maintenance? Of course we know, the support is coming from individual donors. This situation raises caution flags; like the IRS, we too can demand accountability from such religious bodies. Also, as I reviewed my list of donations, I could say none of my offerings have supported a fleet of jets.

Accountability is a tool for measuring the honesty of any organization, Such religious organizations have end-of-year statements or worth available to their contributors. Generosity is a virtue and a value — by all means, even in a year of poor economy, continue to donate. Do follow the advice of President Reagan: “Trust but verify.” Even religious ministries are accountable, as are individuals, to the IRS. It’s proper to examine how your gifts are being used, even by faith groups.

The mission of the IRS, as I understand it, isn’t to harass but to hold us accountable. The Copeland Ministries isn’t being singled out for harassment because it is a religious organization. Its faulty bookkeeping and thinking and lack of cooperation with the law has earned the battle with the IRS. As I understand the situation, they ran the risk of non-compliance and are now reaping the results.

President Obama is a person of faith; he recognizes the strength (spiritual) that is released in his personal life as he practices daily spiritual exercises.

While on active duty as a U.S. Army Chaplain, I appreciated serving, ministry and working with chaplains who were also assiociated with the same denomination as President Obama.

Already our new president is strengthening the bonds of religion and society and how government, churches, and religious organizations can work together to better community and country. However, there are guidelines and regulations for each to follow to ensure maximum success.

On the campaign trail. President Obama emphasized his Christian faith; in speeches he connected faith and public policy. For instance, he spoke about the present “faith-based” initiatives. He recognized the value of a partnership between government and religious faith organizations dedicated to improving communities. He is already pledging and committing to expanding and renaming the faith-based office.

During the campaign, the Montgomery County Democratic Party established a list of 12 goals to be enacted by Obama should he be elected. First on the list was to rebuild the military. Second, to reform the faith-based office and its mission: he’s already discussing its mission.

Here is what we can glean from his present statements: “He explicitly rejects taxpayer-funded evangelism and religiously-based hiring discrimination with public funds.” This gives us reassurance that our tax dollars will not finance specific evangelistic efforts to save souls. That’s the mission of donations by church members in offering plates. Proselytizing on our tax dollars is forbidden.

President Obama succintly gives insight into his policy when he says:

“If you get a federal grant, you can’t use that grant to proselytize to the people you help and you can’t discriminate against them — or against the people you hire — on the basis of their religion. Second, federal dollars that go directly to churches, temples and mosques can only be used on secular programs. And we’ll ensure that taxpayer dollars go only to those programs that actually work.“

I give kudos to faith groups who are dedicated to such principles. the Catholics and Lutherans set a high standard in public services without proselytizing. Our own Loaves and Fishes, United Way, and Urban Ministries are giving aid to the disenfranchised without requiring any profession of faith.

President Obama and the Obama family are people of faith and support the mission of serving the public. We, too, can assist by requiring inclusivemness and accountability in the use of our tax dollars by religious organizations.

In summary, we can benefit our needy neighbors and fellow Clarksville residents by recognizing and endorsing the following principles for religious groups receiving tax dollars:

Groups don’t have a so-called “right” to take in tax money yet still discriminate on religious grounds when hiring staff.

Ensure that no denomination uses tax dollars for any form of evangelism or religious education.

Religious schools are part of our American fabric and make a significant contribution to the building of moral character. However, such fine educational institutions are not to be funded with tax dollars.

In addition, I request the following in the beginnings of their new administration:

Reform of the Justice Department

Sever ties between fundamentalism and the military

Do not base public policy on theology

Preserve the ban on church politicking

For more information on these issues, read the January edition of “Church and State.”
