J.R. Tate’s to tell Appalachian stories

A man who has written extensively about the Appalachian Trail – and hiked the trail’s entire 2,175 miles four times – will be at Austin Peay State University to speak on his experiences and help kick off the Spring 2009 book series of The Peay Read.

J.R. Tate, a retired Marine Corps officer who completed Appalachian Trail thru-hikes in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2006, will speak at 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22 and at noon, Friday, Jan. 23. Both sessions, free and open to the public, will be in the Morgan University Center, Room 308.

He will be on hand to announce The Peay Read 2009 book selection, “A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail” by Bill Bryson. Bryson tells of his encounters while hiking the trail.     «Read the rest of this article»

Sports psychology professor to analyze contestants on “Dancing with the Stars”

Key “sports psychology” into the search field on YouTube.com, and Gregg Steinberg’s image is among the top video results.

Steinberg, an associate professor of health and human performance at Austin Peay State University, is a noted sports psychologist and frequent media personality on national television networks such as CNN and the Golf Channel to speak about the mindset of an athletic champion.

He will do the same Oct. 28 when he appears on ABC’s hit competition show, “Dancing With the Stars,” to analyze the mental toughness of the remaining contestants. Steinberg said the show’s producers contacted him two weeks ago after discovering him through a YouTube Web site search of sports psychology experts.

“I will be analyzing objectively by listening to what the contestants say, paying attention to body language and watching the performance,” he said. “I’ll be discussing why the dancers got kicked off the program and make recommendations for the dancers still in the contest.” «Read the rest of this article»

“Wings of Liberty” plans explored at APSU

Completion of the new Wings of Liberty Military Museum at Fort Campbell, KY, is drawing nearer to the opening date of 2010, and the progress being made on the facility will be the topic of the next session of the 2008-09 Library Athenaeum program at Austin Peay State University.

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Nichols, who serves as executive director and chief operation officer of the Fort Campbell Historical Foundation, will present, “Wings of Liberty: The New Museum Coming to Town,” at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7 in Woodward Library.
