APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Eleven Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball alumni continue to play professional baseball at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Break, the official midway point of the baseball season.

The formidable list includes a pair of Governors – the ageless A.J. Ellis and Shawn Kelley playing at the major league level.

Instant Peay Play: APSU’s Michael Costanzo joins list of Govs picked in MLB Draft

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball program has had a history over the years of getting players selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft and this year was no exception with APSU Governors starting pitcher Michael Costanzo being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Costanzo, a native of Chicago, was selected in the 31st round by the Rays – the 930th overall pick in the draft– while also being a part of a record 16 overall players from the Ohio Valley Conference to be chosen in this year’s draft.

APSU Baseball drops Morehead State, 10-4

APSU BaseballMorehead, KY – Starter Michael Costanzo took a shutout into the eighth inning and Austin Peay State University’s baseball team supplied a pair of home runs in a 10-4 Ohio Valley Conference victory against Morehead State, Friday night at Allen Field.

Costanzo (7-1) opened the game with seven shutout frames. His biggest trouble came in the first inning when he allowed a leadoff single and then saw a ball hit the top of the wall in right for a second single. However, he worked around the runners on the corners by issuing his first strikeout.

APSU Baseball has Four Alumni active in the Minor Leagues

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Four Austin Peay State University baseball alumni began the 2018 baseball season on minor league active rosters throughout the country.

Ryne Harper (2008-11), who was picked up by the Minnesota Twins organization during the offseason, began the year at the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. He already has two saves in his first two appearances with the club, striking out all four batters he has faced.

APSU Basketball hosts Toledo this weekend for 2018 Seasons first home games

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Austin Peay’s baseball team and Mother Nature continue their early season battle with this weekend’s series against Toledo being modified to avoid heavy rainfall in the forecast.

The three-game set is scheduled to begin at noon, Friday, with the Govs and Rockets playing a doubleheader.

APSU Baseball travels to St. Louis to take on South Dakota State

APSU BaseballClarksville, TN – Mother Nature forced Austin Peay State University’s baseball team to both change its opponent and hit the road for its season-opening weekend.

The Governors, who were originally scheduled to play Maryland Eastern Shore in Clarksville, now will open 2018 with a three-game series against South Dakota State, Friday-Sunday, at Saint Louis University’s Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Instant Peay Play: APSU’s Alex Robles joins list of all-time greats to be picked in MLB Draft

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – When recent Austin Peay State University graduate baseball player Alex Robles was selected in the 30th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft on June 14th he joined an outstanding list of former APSU baseball players that have started their aspiring journeys to the big leagues with their names being called in the draft.

Drafted with the 886th overall pick, as a right-handed pitcher by the Minnesota Twins, Robles — who is from Tucson, AZ – became the 41st Governor to be drafted, since Tim Burns was drafted in 1972 by the California Angels.

APSU’s Alex Robles selected by Minnesota Twins on MLB Draft’s third day

APSU BaseballNew York, NY – Austin Peay State University baseball alumnus Alex Robles was selected in the 30th round of Major League Baseball’s Draft, Wednesday.

Robles, of Tucson, Arizona, was selected with the first pick of the 30th round (886th overall) by the Minnesota Twins. Drafted as a right-handed pitcher, he becomes the fifth Governors player selected in the MLB draft over the past two seasons and the 41st to be drafted since 1972.

APSU Baseball’s Parker Phillips becomes third Governor to earn NCBWA freshman honors

APSU BaseballLynchburg, VA – For the second time in five days, Austin Peay State University freshman catcher Parker Phillips has earned national recognition, with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association naming him a Second-Team Freshman All-American, Monday.

Phillips becomes is just the third Austin Peay freshman to earn recognition from the NCBWA, joining catcher Matt Wollenzin (2011) and utility man Alex Robles (2014).
