Dunbar informed Austin Peay baseball head coach Travis Janssen of his decision Thursday morning.

Austin Peay State University coach Dave Loos undergoes successful surgery to remove Tumor

APSU Men's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dave Loos, Austin Peay State University’s longtime basketball coach, recently underwent surgery to successfully remove a malignant tumor.

“Our thoughts and concerns right now are for the health and well-being of Coach Loos,” APSU Athletics Director Ryan Ivey said. “We look forward to welcoming him back when he has made a full recovery.”

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Making the transition from college to professional baseball happens quickly, just ask former Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball players Ridge Smith, Logan Gray, Garrett Copeland and Jared Carkuff, who in a little less than 40 days ago were playing college baseball and now are settling into their pro careers.

Ridge Smith, a catcher, was drafted in the 12th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays organization and was assigned to the Bluefield (WV) Blue Jays of the Rookie Appalachian League.

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Ryne Harper, who was a member of the Austin Peay State University baseball team from 2008-11 and current member of the Jackson (TN) Generals, was a part of a history-making first half for the franchise.

The 6-foot-3, right-handed, Clarksville native is a middle reliever and has been an important cog for the Generals, the Double A minor league farm team for the Seattle Mariners, who set a club record with 46 wins in their season’s first half.

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – This past week in New York City, Major League Baseball held its annual amateur draft with four Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball players having their names called, bring the all-time total to 40 players selected in the draft from APSU since the first Gov was drafted in 1972.

Juniors Ridge Smith (catcher), Logan Gray (third base), Garrett Copeland (second base) and senior pitcher Jared Carkuff were chosen in the 12th, 13th, 30th and 35th rounds, respectively, marking the second time Austin Peay had has as many as four players drafted at one time – and trailing only the 2013 MLB draft were the Govs had five players picked.

Four APSU Govs picked in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player draft, Saturday

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityNew York, NY  – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team saw a quartet of student-athletes drafted in the third day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, Saturday.

Junior catcher Ridge Smith was the first Governors player to be drafted, hearing his named called in the 12th round (372nd pick) by the Toronto Blue Jays. Junior third baseman/outfielder Logan Gray went next with his hometown Kansas City Royals nabbing him in the 13th round (403rd pick).

APSU Governors continue development in Summer Baseball Leagues

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Soon after Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) baseball team saw its season come to a close, the members of that team departed Clarksville to continue their development in collegiate summer baseball leagues across the country.

A dozen Governors began the summer stationed in seven different collegiate leagues, including sophomore John Sparks who landed with the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – With Austin Peay State University’s baseball team elimination from the Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tournament this past Saturday the 2015-16 spring sports semester and overall athletic school year came to an end for the Governors.

Although their third-place finish isn’t what the Govs wanted as they went into the tournament, their return to the post season, after falling just short of making the postseason the past two years, is a great starting point for the program and first-year head coach Travis Janssen.

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityJackson, TN – The improbable became the impossible as midnight struck on the Austin Peay State University baseball season, Saturday night, in an Ohio Valley Conference tourney elimination game at the Ballpark at Jackson.

After finishing a game at 2:48am, Thursday, and playing a 4-hour, 44-minute dramatic 13-inning game earlier Saturday, the physically-taxed Govs ran out of magic and pitching late against No. 1 seed Southeast Missouri, falling 10-4.
