Instant Peay Play: APSU’s Brad Kirtley about to put -30- mark on Hall of Fame career

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – With July quickly approaching on the calendar, Austin Peay State University’s all-time sports information director, and Athletics Department Hall of Famer member, Brad Kirtley is nearing the end of a 30+ year career at the university as he heads into retirement.

Kirtley became APSU’s sports information director in February 1984 — replacing another Athletics Department Hall of Famer member Sherwin Clift — after working in the Southeast Missouri State University’s sports information office.

Savannah Amato selected APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Freshman pole vaulter Savannah Amato, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Amato took gold at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, hitting a career-best 4.04m (13’ 3”) for her first career OVC gold medal. The 10 points she contributed to Austin Peay’s team score proved crucial to the Governors third-place finish—the third consecutive top-three showing by Austin Peay at the OVC Outdoor Championships.

Chase Hamilton named APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior outfielder Chase Hamilton, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Hamilton homered twice in the opening game of Austin Peay’s series against UT Martin, part of a 3-for-4, three-RBI outing that allowed the Govs to take Game 1, 8-3.

He followed that up with a 3-for-5 performance the following day after moving into the clean-up spot in the lineup.

APSU Athlete of the Week Caleb Powell

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior Caleb Powell, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

In Austin Peay’s lone victory last week, Powell tossed six innings of four-hit, one-run ball at Morehead State’s notoriously small Allen Field, leading the Govs to a series-salvaging 6-2 victory against the Eagles.

The Milan, Tennessee, native retired the side in the first and fourth innings and danced out of trouble with runners in scoring position in the second and sixth innings for his season’s fifth victory and second in as many week’s as the Governors No. 3 starter.

Austin Peay’s Logan Gray selected APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior Logan Gray, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

In hitting .611 (11-for-18) with four home runs, 14 RBI and seven runs scored last week, Gray not only led the Govs to a sweep in their Ohio Valley Conference series against Eastern Kentucky and a midweek win against Lipscomb.

The Leawood, Kansas native earned adidas®/Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Player of the Week, was one of six players named to the Louisville Slugger® National Player of the Week list and was recognized for his good work in Baseball America’s weekly “Off the Bat” report.

APSU Athlete of the Week Morgan Kauffman

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior Morgan Kauffman, of the Austin Peay State University women’s golf team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Kauffman earned All-Tournament honors at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championships, placing fifth with a three-round 224 (75-76-73) after moving up three spots to lead the Lady Govs to a fifth-place team finish. She is Austin Peay’s first All-Tournament player since Chelsea Harris’ string of four straight all-tournament honors (2008-11).

Austin Peay names Savannah Amato APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Freshman pole vaulter Savannah Amato, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Amato became just the third vaulter in Austin Peay history to hit 13 feet in the pole vault, hitting 4.01m (13’ 1.75”) to take fourth at the Hilltopper Relays.

After clearing her first two attempts at 3.41m and 3.56m with ease, Amato needed all three attempts at 3.71m before clearing the bar on her final vault. She broke her own personal best on her second attempt at 3.86m before entering Austin Peay lore on her final attempt at 4.01m.

Yanes Garcia went 2-0 in singles last week, helping the Govs to Ohio Valley Conference wins against Southeast Missouri and Murray State. She opened her week with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Southeast Missouri’s Mila Majtan.

Michael Costanzo named APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Sophomore pitcher Michael Costanzo, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Costanzo was named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, Monday, after carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Saturday’s contest against Bradley. The Chicago native was masterful in his third career start, scattering two runs, a hit and a walk to go along with eight strikeouts.
