Austin Peay State University’s Breigh Jones earns CoSIDA Academic All-District honors

APSU Women's Track and Field - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Senior Breigh Jones, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, earned Capital One Academic All-District III honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for women’s track and field/cross country.

Jones, who graduated in May with a degree in psychology after a storied Austin Peay career, is the first Governor track performer to earn Academic All-District honors since Molly Basch (2013-14).

Alex Robles powers APSU past Belmont in OVC Baseball Tournament

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityJackson, TN – Junior pitcher Alex Robles became the first Austin Peay State University pitcher in nine seasons to reach 10 victories as the Governors defeated Belmont, 12-7, Wednesday night, in first-round Ohio Valley Conference tournament baseball action at the Ballpark at Jackson in a contest that didn’t end until 1:47am, Thursday.

Weathering permitting, the third-seed Governors (29-21) now will face second-seed Jacksonville State, 3:00pm, Thursday.

Austin Peay State University has four Govs earn All-OVC honors

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityJackson, TN – Junior utility man Logan Gray led a group of four Austin Peay State University baseball players named to the 2016 All-Ohio Valley Conference teams and recognized during Tuesday’s banquet preceding the OVC Baseball Championship.

Gray was the only Governors player to receive first-team recognition in a vote of league’s baseball coaches and sports information directors. Junior right fielder Chase Hamilton, junior starting pitcher Alex Robles and senior relief pitcher Jared Carkuff were each named to the league’s second team.

Instant Peay Play: Breaking down APSU Baseball’s return to the post season

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team returns to the post season for the first time in three years this week, as it enters the Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tournament at Pringle Park in Jackson, TN, as the number-three seed.

The Govs (28-21, 17-9 OVC) were the number-two overall seed after completing their OVC schedule a week-and-a-half ago, but had to vacate four conference wins this past week due to playing an ineligible player which allowed Jacksonville State to past them in the conference standing this past weekend, sweeping Tennessee Martin in their three-game OVC series.

Savannah Amato selected APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Freshman pole vaulter Savannah Amato, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Amato took gold at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, hitting a career-best 4.04m (13’ 3”) for her first career OVC gold medal. The 10 points she contributed to Austin Peay’s team score proved crucial to the Governors third-place finish—the third consecutive top-three showing by Austin Peay at the OVC Outdoor Championships.

Austin Peay State University has Six Govs earn Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsFairfax, VA – Six Austin Peay State University student-athletes were named to the 2016 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Teams, selected by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine.

Senior Breigh Jones capped her stellar career with a third honor from the publication, while seniors Kymmalett Ross and Jessica Gray and junior Unjala Lester earned their second honors. Senior Tiasha Gray and sophomore Kirstin Robertson were first-time recipients of the honor.

Jones, Ross and Tiasha Gray were part of Austin Peay’s 37-athlete graduation class that participated in the May 6th commencement exercises.

Savannah Amato to represent APSU Track at 2016 NCAA East Preliminary

APSU Women's Track and Field - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – For the sixth consecutive season, Austin Peay State University track and field will be sending at least one athlete to the NCAA East Preliminary, with freshman pole vaulter Savannah Amato slated to represent the red-and-white Friday, May 27th in Jacksonville.

Amato, Austin Peay’s first pole vault qualifier since Carrie Burggraf, a three-time qualifier from 2008-10, is the third Austin Peay freshman in four years to advance to Preliminary competition, after Breigh Jones (2013) and Kaylnn Pitts (2014).
