APSU Athletics icon Cheryl Holt inducted to OVC Hall of Fame

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsNashville, TN – For nearly 35 years, Cheryl Holt served in the Austin Peay State University (APSU) athletics department in various roles. Holt has been inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame during ceremonies held in conjunction with the OVC Spring Meetings, Friday.

Inducted into Austin Peay’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012, Holt joined the Governors athletics program in 1982 as a tennis coach but was tapped by then-Director of Athletics Johnny Miller to elevate the volleyball program. She served just two seasons as tennis coach, but her tenure as volleyball coach lasted much longer – an impressive 23 seasons.

APSU Sports cap impressive 2018-19 campaign with best-ever finish in OVC Commissioner’s Cup

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsBrentwood, TN –  The Austin Peay State University (APSU)s athletics department posted its best-ever finish in the 2018-19 OVC Commissioner’s Cup behind two regular-season championships and another pair of Top 3 finishes in Ohio Valley Conference play

APSU delivered its second-straight 100-point tally in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup, with its 109 points this season an improvement over last season’s 101.5 points. That total pushed the Governors to fourth among the league’s 12 members. Murray State won the 2019 competition with 128 points, its first victory since the inaugural commissioner’s cup was awarded in 2008-09. Jacksonville State finished second (115) followed by Belmont (114) and Austin Peay.

Austin Peay State University student-athletes average 3.0 GPA for a record fourth straight semester

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) student-athletes posted a departmental grade-point average of 3.0 or better for a program-record fourth consecutive semester finishing the Spring 2019 semester with a 3.096 mark.

A department-record 70 percent of Austin Peay’s 289 varsity student-athletes earned academic honors for the spring semester. The last eight semesters dating back to Fall 2015 have yielded eight of the top-10 semester GPA’s since tracking data began in 1993. For just the fourth time, more than 100 Govs earned a spot on the Dean’s List, with 48 posting perfect 4.0 GPA’s for the semester.

APSU Women's TennisTempe, AZ – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team has been awarded the Ohio Valley Region Community Service Award. This was announced Saturday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) when they released their regional award winners.

APSU Sports has Five squads post best-ever APR number in latest NCAA updates

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsIndianapolis, IN – The NCAA released Wednesday, May 8th, that five Austin Peay State University (APSU) intercollegiate athletic teams posted their best-ever multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR).

The NCAA released the complete four-year APR rates for 14 of Austin Peay’s teams—beach volleyball, in its third season, is still building an APR while indoor and outdoor track and field were combined into one data sport-group in 2015. Baseball (985) posted its best-ever APR for the fifth year in a row, increasing from 949 after the 2013 season to 985 via the 2017-18 data.

Meanwhile, a quartet of Austin Peay programs were honored by the NCAA with the Public Recognition Award last week for landing in the top-10 percent among their respective sports.

APSU Tennis coach Ross Brown gets contract extension

 

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison announced, Tuesday, May 7th, that tennis head coach Ross Brown has been given a contract extension. Brown is fresh off an appearance in the NCAA Tournament after Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships in women’s tennis.

The women’s tennis team entered the NCAA Tournament with a 22-0 record – the only undefeated program in the nation heading into the weekend.

APSU Women's TennisAthens, GA – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team’s thrilling season came to an end, Saturday, May 4th at the Magill Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Georgia, as the Governors fell to No. 22 Wake Forest, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
