Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – As summer rounds the bend and heads into the final stretch, there are several early storylines for Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) athletic department to watch as the new school year nears.

Leading the list of storylines is there are still a few staff positions still vacant in the department, including athletic director and head softball coach among others.

The athletic director’s position could be filled very soon, with the university having held interviews with three prospective candidates for the job last week.

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University (APSU) volleyball program had been trending upward for several seasons under the direction of head coach Taylor Mott, transforming into a perennial contender with a deep well of talent to draw from.  

But from the moment the Govs toppled 19th-ranked Missouri in an epic five-setter in the season’s third match, even the most casual observer could see the 2017 campaign was going to be special.

2017-18 Top-10 — No. 4: APSU has an abundance of OVC honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Usually in Austin Peay State  University’s yearly top-10 countdown, APSU takes special care to identify each individual who was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach, Player, Freshman or other comparable “Of the Year” honor for their respective sport, because that’s a big deal and needs to be recognized as such.

But, well… there were too many this year, so they all get to go here.

Between coaches and players, 14 members of the Austin Peay extended family earned one of the top honors for their respective sport in 2017-18, including five Freshman of the Year honors.

2017-18 Top-10 — No. 6: Back-to-back 3.0 semesters for APSU Student-Athletes

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – APSU enjoyed huge successes on the field of competition in 2017-18, but might have been even better in the classroom.

For the first time since 2008-09, Austin Peay State University student-athletes posted back-to-back semesters with a department-wide 3.0 grade-point average, including a program-record 3.110 mark for the fall semester.

The tennis program’s led the way, with the women’s team posting a 3.964 in the fall and a 3.957 in the spring; all eight members of the men’s team earned Dean’s List honors after a 3.890 in the fall, and followed that up with a 3.691 in the spring.

If we’re lucky, APSU might get a dozen or so chances in a given year to take down a top-25 foe.

The 2017-18 year saw a trio of Governor squads topple a team considered to be among the nation’s best.

Several institutions took note of his impressive accomplishments, and earlier today, Ivey announced he will leave Austin Peay to become athletic director at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas.

APSU Governors athletics posts best-ever finish in OVC Commissioner’s Cup

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsBrentwood, TN – Behind a quartet of Top 3 finishes in Ohio Valley Conference play, Austin Peay State University’s athletics department posted its best-ever finish in the 2017-18 OVC Commissioner’s Cup.

Austin Peay posted its first-ever 100-point tally in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup, under the new format that began 10 years ago. The Governors 101.5 points pushed them to fifth among the league’s 12 members. Eastern Kentucky won the title for the fifth consecutive season with 118.5 points followed by Murray State (114.5), Belmont (111.25) and Jacksonville State (110).

Four Austin Peay State University sports teams earn NCAA public recognition for second-straight year

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsIndianapolis, IN – For a second consecutive year, four Austin Peay State University athletic teams earned one of the NCAA’s top academic honors, Wednesday, receiving a Public Recognition Award from the organization for maintaining a multiyear Academic Progress Rate among the top 10 percent of their respective sport.

“Our big picture goal is for each student-athlete to leave APSU with a championship ring on one hand and a diploma in the other and these recognitions show we are committed to that ideal” said Austin Peay Athletics Director Ryan Ivey. “I want to congratulate the coaches and student-athletes on those teams for receiving public recognition from the NCAA. I also want to thank our dedicated academic services staff and university faculty for their service.”

APSU Volleyball releases 2018 Schedule

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – In 100 days, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will open its 29-match regular-season schedule, which includes 10 home matches, head coach Taylor Mott released.

The Governors will open the 2018 season with an August 21st exhibition contest against Trevecca in Clarksville.

APSU Men’s Basketball junior Zach Glotta to travel abroad as part of Athletes In Action team

APSU Men's BasketballClarksville, TN – APSU Men’s Basketball junior point guard Zach Glotta’s summer vacation will be a little different this year.

The O’Fallon, Missouri native has a couple of big events coming up in the next few weeks. First, he’ll say “I do,” to fiancée Ashley Slay, former Austin Peay State University volleyball standout, May 19th, 2018. Then he’ll flee the country.
