SIU picked up the doubles after taking wins at No. 2, 6-1, and No. 3, 6-2. Twins Lidia Yanes Garcia and Claudia Yanes Garcia held a 4-3 lead in their No. 1 match that went unfinished.

Austin Peay State University Women’s Tennis falls at Chattanooga

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityChattanooga, TN – The Austin Peay women’s tennis fell in its season opener on the road at Chattanooga Monday, 6-1.

The Mocs swept the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. Samatha Caswell and Rachele Gazzola defeated Claudia Yanes Garcia and Lidia Yanes Garcia 6-0 at the No. 1 spot before taking a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles when Caroline Hall and McKenzie Barco defeated Brittney Covington and Alessandra Maganuco 6-1.

The Govs are coming off of a 2016 season that saw APSU make the OVC Tournament on the heels of Lidia Yanes Garcia‘s OVC Player of the Year season.

180 APSU Athletes earn Fall Semester Academic Honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – For the fourth consecutive semester, more than half of Austin Peay State University’s athletes received academic recognition following the recently concluded spring semester.

The department saw 180 athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, each earning a minimum 3.0 grade-point average during the semester. That amounted to more than 53 percent of the department’s near-record 335 athletes earning academic recognition from the department.

It is the fourth consecutive semester the department has seen more than 50 percent of its athletes post a 3.0 or better GPA.

APSU Athletes post 2.922 GPA for Fall Semester

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Eleven Austin Peay State University athletics’ teams surpassed the 3.0 grade point average during the fall semester highlighted by a department-high 3.875 GPA from the women’s tennis team as announced Tuesday.

Women’s golf followed women’s tennis with a 3.626 GPA, while volleyball posted a 3.453 GPA. Tennis also posted the top GPA in a men’s sport with a 3.286 GPA with men’s cross country and baseball following with 3.109 and 3.078 GPAs respectively.

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityMalibu, CALidia Yanes Garcia lost both of her opening matches Thursday morning at the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters – Powered by UTR at the Malibu Racquet Club.

Yanes Garcia and her mixed doubles partner, Andrew Watson from Memphis, lost their opening match 6-0 to Bryce Shankle and Max Tchoutakin from Baylor.
