Two Govs Finish in Second At APSU Fall Invitational

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Two Govs finish in second place as the Austin Peay State women’s tennis team completed its fall home tournament, the APSU Fall Invitational.

In Flight 1, Lidia Yanes Garcia opened play with a bye before cruising to the finals after a pair of straight set wins. She defeated UT-Martin’s Assel Jumamukhambetova 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before topping Lewis’ Dora Andrejszki, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State University women’s team will host the five-team APSU Fall Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Play will start Friday morning at 9:00am with the Flight 1 and Flight 2 singles action.

APSU Athletics Department sports New Faces

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – A new academic year brings a host of new faces into the Austin Peay State University athletics family, with an ever-expanding department bringing an increased demand for talented staff.

Two additions were made in the academic services area. Ryan Combs, recently of Belmont, joins the department as an academic coordinator working alongside Austin Peay’s soccer, baseball and women’s basketball programs. In addition, Kara Carpenter joins the department as an advisor to the football team after spending last season at Texas A&M-Commerce. She graduated from Western Carolina in 2013.

Twenty-one APSU student-athletes earn OVC Medal of Honor recognition

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsBrentwood, TN – Twenty-one Austin Peay State University student-athletes were among the record 245 Ohio Valley Conference athletes to earn OVC Medal of Honor accolades for the 2015-16 academic year.

For the fourth year in a row, every Academic Medal of Honor recipient posted a 4.0 grade-point average. The record shattered the previous high of 212, set during the 2012-13 academic year. Over the past five years, 1,025 student-athletes have earned an OVC Academic Medal of Honor.

The OVC Academic Medal of Honor recognizes those student-athletes that achieve the highest grade-point in their respective OVC-sponsored sport for the entire academic year, were eligible and used a season of competition while participating in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport.

170 APSU Student-Athletes earn Spring Semester Academic Honors

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Over half of Austin Peay State University’s student-athletes received academic recognition following the recently concluded spring semester with the department announcing its student-athletes posted a 2.91 grade-point average.

The department saw 170 student-athletes named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, each earning a minimum 3.0 GPA during the semester. The athletics department saw 84 student-athletes named to Austin Peay’s Dean’s List and 34 of those were recognized on the President’s list, each posting an unblemished 4.0 GPA.

Lidia Yanes Garcia named Outstanding Female Athlete, Track’s Breigh Jones chosen Female Legends

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TNChris Horton, who punctuated a consummate basketball career with Ohio Valley Conference tournament most valuable player honors, has been chosen as both Austin Peay State University’s 2015-16 Outstanding Male Athlete as well as the Legends Award recipient as the most valuable male senior athlete.

Meanwhile, Lidia Yanes Garcia, who became the first women’s tennis player in OVC history to be named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season, was named APSU’s Outstanding Female Athlete.

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s women’s tennis team has had several outstanding players over the years, but none accomplished what Lidia Yanes Garcia did as a freshman.

This past week Garcia became the first women’s tennis player in Ohio Valley Conference history to take both the OVC Player of the Year and OVC Freshman of the Year honors, while being First-Team All-OVC along with her twin sister Claudia Yanes Garcia.

APSU Governors athletics teams continue NCAA APR improvement

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsIndianapolis, IN – Ten of Austin Peay State University’s 14 intercollegiate athletic teams improved or posted a perfect score in the most recent release NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate, Wednesday.

Last week, the NCAA released its public recognition awards which are presented annually to those programs that post the top marks in their respective sport-groups. Austin Peay saw its women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s volleyball teams recognized as each scored a perfect 1000 Academic Progress Rate.

APSU Lady Govs Tennis falls to Eastern Illinois at OVC Tournament

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team fell to Eastern Illinois 4-0, Friday, in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference at the Centennial SportsPlex, ending its season.

The Govs finish the year with an overall record of 7-10, their highest win total since 2013. In that same season, APSU also lost to EIU in the first round, 4-0.

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityBrentwood, TN – Freshman Lidia Yanes Garcia, of the Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team, received the highest honor at the annual Ohio Valley Conference banquet, Thursday, becoming the first women’s player in OVC history to be named Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season.

In addition, twin sister Claudia Yanes Garcia was named to the All-OVC first team.
