Four Austin Peay State University sports teams earn NCAA public recognition for second-straight year

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsIndianapolis, IN – For a second consecutive year, four Austin Peay State University athletic teams earned one of the NCAA’s top academic honors, Wednesday, receiving a Public Recognition Award from the organization for maintaining a multiyear Academic Progress Rate among the top 10 percent of their respective sport.

“Our big picture goal is for each student-athlete to leave APSU with a championship ring on one hand and a diploma in the other and these recognitions show we are committed to that ideal” said Austin Peay Athletics Director Ryan Ivey. “I want to congratulate the coaches and student-athletes on those teams for receiving public recognition from the NCAA. I also want to thank our dedicated academic services staff and university faculty for their service.”

APSU Volleyball releases 2018 Schedule

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – In 100 days, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will open its 29-match regular-season schedule, which includes 10 home matches, head coach Taylor Mott released.

The Governors will open the 2018 season with an August 21st exhibition contest against Trevecca in Clarksville.

APSU Men’s Basketball junior Zach Glotta to travel abroad as part of Athletes In Action team

APSU Men's BasketballClarksville, TN – APSU Men’s Basketball junior point guard Zach Glotta’s summer vacation will be a little different this year.

The O’Fallon, Missouri native has a couple of big events coming up in the next few weeks. First, he’ll say “I do,” to fiancée Ashley Slay, former Austin Peay State University volleyball standout, May 19th, 2018. Then he’ll flee the country.

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsFairfax, VA – An incredible 10 Austin Peay State University student-athletes have been named to the 2018 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Teams, selected by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.

Twins Lidia and Claudia Yanes Garcia, of the women’s tennis team, were joined by David Martinez (baseball), Jalen Marsalis (football), Benedict Louis (football), Renee Semaan (soccer), Pamela Penaloza (soccer), Nia Gibbs-Francis, (track and field), Logan Carger (volleyball) and Hezron Kiptoo (men’s cross country) for the most Governors honored in the award’s history.

Austin Peay State University Student-Athletes participate in APPLE Training Institute

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Promoting and ensuring student-athlete wellness is a priority for Austin Peay State University, and in January, two student-athletes got the unique opportunity to participate in the APPLE Training Institute, which promotes wellness and substance abuse prevention for all student-athletes.

Sophomore tight end Trey Pruitt, of the football team, and sophomore setter MiMi Arrington, of the volleyball team, along with Athletic Trainer Lindsey Gamble and Academic Coordinator Ryan Combs traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia to participate in the 2018 APPLE Training Institute.

APSU Volleyball junior Kristen Stucker’s Spring Break starts at U.S. Women’s National Team Tryouts

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – While most college students will take their Spring Break to, well, take a break, Austin Peay State University volleyball junior setter Kristen Stucker will at least start her Spring Break under the microscope of the U.S. Women’s National Team’s coaching staff and evaluators.

You see, Stucker was one of 234 athletes from 89 colleges and universities across the nation to be invited to the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts which will be held March 2nd-4th at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

APSU signs Volleyball head coach Taylor Mott to Four-Year Contract

APSU Women's VolleyballClarksville, TN – After seeing its volleyball program construct the most successful season in program history, Austin Peay State University has agreed to a new four-year contract with head coach Taylor Mott, athletics director Ryan Ivey announced Wednesday afternoon.

The new agreement begins January 1st, 2018 and carries through the end of the 2021 calendar year.

A Look Back at Austin Peay State University in 2017

 

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University, which turned 90 in April, experienced another big year, with new buildings and programs transforming the campus over the last 12 months.

Women’s volleyball and men’s football electrified the community this fall, and in August, thousands of people cheered as the afternoon sky went dark for nearly two minutes. As this 90th year comes to an end, here are some of the major stories that came out of Austin Peay in 2017.

APSU Athlete of the Month Brooke Moore

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University volleyball freshman outside hitter Brooke Moore has been named the Chick-Fil-A Austin Peay Student-Athlete of the Month for November.

The Louisville Kentucky native made the final month of her first Austin Peay campaign a memorable one, becoming the first freshman in Ohio Valley Conference history to earn OVC Tournament MVP honors after leading the Govs to their first OVC Tournament title since 2010.

She helped rally the Govs from first-set deficits against both Eastern Kentucky and Murray State, posting a career-high 22 kills in the semifinals against the Colonels and recording seven of her 15 kills during the final two sets against the Racers.
