The new facility provides a much needed exhibition space for APSU faculty and alumni in what has rapidly become the focal point of the Arts community in our town. “It’s a way to help our alumni who are out there trying to build their careers,” said Gregg Schlanger, APSU professor of Art. “It gives them a line on their resume and allows us to brag about our program.”

Critiquing the art

Downtown Clarksville is the home to several exceptional Art Galleries, the Customs House Museum, and of course the wonderful Roxy Regional Theatre. Downtown Businesses which prominently showcase the arts include Hodgepodge, ARTifacts, Rogate’s Boutique, Visions Metaphysical Boutique, The Front Page Deli, and Ingredients. Professor Schlanger noted that their Downtown Art Gallery will become a major contributator “We’re going to add to what’s going on around here.”

The gallery opened with “Whatever,” an exhibition of work by APSU art alumni. Artists featured in this exhibit include Chip Boles, Marc Pewitt, Miranda Herrick, Betsy Wynkoop, Kelly Kerrigan, Ally Reeves, Bill Eilliot, Scotty Peek, Young Kim, Donna Stack, Travis Childers and Melody Shipley. The exhibit runs through Nov. 28. For those interested in visiting the gallery, it is located at 116 Strawberry Alley. They are open from noon to 4 p.m., on Tuesdays through Saturdays. Simpson as part of the Southern Arts Federation’s Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers at the museum on Saturday, November 7th at 2 pm. Following a screening of his documentary, “Milking the Rhino,” Simpson will engage the audience in a discussion about the film and his work as a filmmaker. Admission to the screening is free.

“Milking the Rhino” tells a nuanced tale of human-wildlife coexistence in post-colonial Africa. The Maasai tribe of Kenya and Namibia’s Himba—two of Earth’s oldest cattle cultures—are in the midst of upheaval. Emerging from a century of “white man conservation,” which turned their lands into game reserves and fueled resentment towards wildlife, Himba and Maasai communities are now vying for a piece of the wildlife-tourism pie. Community-based conservation, which tries to balance the needs of wildlife and people, has been touted by environmentalists as “win-win.” The reality, however, is more complex. “A rhino means nothing to me! I can’t kill it for meat like a cow.” And when drought decimates the grass shared by livestock and wildlife, the community’s commitment to conservation is sorely tested.

David E. Simpson has crafted award-winning films for 25 years. As a producer, director and editor he plies his trade in the belief that a well-told story can move viewers’ hearts and minds regarding crucial, human issues. David co-produced and directed “When Billy Broke His Head,” a documentary about disability culture that won the Sundance Film Festival’s Freedom of Expression Award. David directed “Refrigerator Mothers,” about a generation of mothers who raised autistic children under the shadow of professionally-promoted mother-blame. The film won top honors at the Florida, Indiana, and Sedona film festivals and aired on the PBS series P.O.V. David also produced and directed “Halsted Street, USA,” a multi-award-winning snapshot of America through the prism of one multicultural street. His experimental narrative, “Dante’s Dream,” a re-working of Dante’s cosmology, earned five 1st place festival awards.

Phillis Levin, of New York, and Kate Gleason, of New Hampshire, will visit Austin Peay State University that day for a 7 p.m. poetry reading at the Morgan University Center.

Both women share a talent for the written word, but they recently forged a new connection. Levin, in her role as contest judge, selected Gleason’s poetry collection, “Measuring the Dark,” as the winner of the First Book Award at Zone 3 Press.

Zone 3 Press is a nonprofit literary press supported by the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts at Austin Peay State University.

Finding someone as esteemed as Levin to select the winning manuscript for the 2008 award ensured the press would produce a book noted for its high artistic and literary attributes. Levin is currently a professor of English and poet-in-residence at Hofstra University, and she also teaches in the graduate creative writing program at New York University.

She attended Sarah Lawrence College and the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of the poetry collections “Temples and Fields,” “The Afterimage,” “Mercury” and “May Day.”

Her poems have appeared in numerous publications, such as The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Grand Street, Poetry, The Nation, Agni, The New Republic, The Kenyon Review, Poetry London, Literary Imagination and the Paris Review.

After combing through numerous manuscripts submitted to Zone 3, Levin chose Gleason’s “Measuring the Dark” to win the press’ coveted prize. Gleason is the former editor of Peregrine literary journal. She earned a Bachelor or Arts from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and attended writing workshops at Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, the New Hampshire Writers’ Project and Amherst Writers and Artists.

Gleason is the recipient of several writing fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the Vermont Studio Center. She also won the Outstanding Emerging Writer Award from the New Hampshire Writers’ Project and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Her poems have appeared in Best American Poetry, Boomer Girls, Claiming the Spirit Within, Crab Orchard Review, Ekphrasis, Green Mountains Review, Lost Angeles Times Book Review, Sonora Review, The Spoon River Poetry Review and Zone 3.

The poetry reading, which brings these two talented poets together, is free and open to the public.

Gay will read from his work at 7 p.m., July 14 in Room 303 of the APSU Morgan University Center. This reading is free and open to the public.

Gay, a Tennessee native, emerged upon the literary scene later in life, not publishing his first novel, “The Long Home,” until after he was 40. Critics and readers, however, were quick to notice his talent, placing him among such luminaries as William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy.

Gay has been described as a master of the “southern gothic” novel with his stories focusing on rural characters and locales, and he’s earned numerous accolades to accompany this praise.

He was awarded the 1999 William Peden Award, the 2000 James A. Michener Memorial Prize, a 2002 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2007 Ford Foundation U.S. Artist grant.

Gay is the author of three novels, “The Long Home,” “Provinces of Night” and “Twilight,” and the short story collections, “I Hate to See that Evening Sun Go Down” and “Wittgenstein’s Lolita.” A fourth novel, “The Lost Country,” is due out sometime this year. His short stories have also appeared in numerous magazines, such as Harper’s, Atlantic Monthly, GQ and New Stories from the South 1999 and 2000.

The First Thursday Art Walk was held on June 4th. Downtown businesses features work created by local artists and offer wine and other tempting treats for the Art Walkers.

Paige King’s Hodgepodge featured the ethereal art by Susan Tomi Cheek. Her pictures, many of them made by using a double exposure, held a haunting sense of the otherworld. One particular picture evoked the image of the tunnel and light that many people claim they see during near death experiences with the soul caught half way between life and death. Susan has a different perspective on the world, and that allows her to capture images that other artists would find hard to duplicate.

Susan is the official photographer for the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (CECA) events. It was also my distinct pleasure to meet one of her daughters, Cherish.

Susan Tomi Cheek and some of her ethereal art

At ARTifacts which is upstairs from Hodgepodge one exhibitor had just sold out as I arrived, but Gabriele Wardeiner was on hand to show me her exhibit of dragons. I love Asian culture and her dragons were reminiscent of their representation of the dragon. Her signature piece was Reisa’s dragon (Center of image below) which was based off of a friends tattoo. She also has some “one of a kind” postcards. Each one with its own unique touches. Including washers, an old onion bag, the tags from tea bags, pieces of a Roxy program, a rubber tree’s leaf. “I never throw anything away” Gabriele said.

Gabriele Wardeiner and her dragon art at ARTifacts

At Visions Metaphysical Boutique owner Linda Cain greeted me as I walked through the door. Her business has such a warm energy that people immediately find themselves at ease. Debbie Bugg was there to do readings for the evenings Art Walkers.

The Roxy had already closed up for the evening by time I arrived but several of the people at the walk had told me that they had really enjoyed Disney’s Cinderella Jr performance that evening. The show which is presented by the Roxy School of the Arts Students, plays through June 13th so it is not too late to catch it!

The timeless fairy tale meets the magic of Disney in this adaptation of the treasured animated film. Poor Cinderella is endlessly mistreated by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and denied a chance to go to the Royal Ball. With a little help from her mice friends, and a lot of help from her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella goes to the ball, meets the Prince, and falls in love! With a beautiful score including “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and the classic “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” this musical will charm its way into your heart, and remind you that dreams really can come true.

Her show Serendipity hangs at the DAC until June 27th. Talking about the exhibit she explained it to me, “I sometimes sit in front of a canvas and don’t know what will come out. Serendipity, it’s a happy mistake, I just made lots of happy mistakes.” Painting on the canvas with acrylic paints she finds that the speed acrylics requires vs the slowness of oil paints, enables her to let her creativity flow freely. “It brought out my inner artist. Instead of doing little tiny details and making sure everything is right. I just sort of spiritually started painting from the inside out. Instead of from the outside in.” She has 27 pieces in the show. With soft pastel colors her city scape scenes have a light airy feel to them. My favorites pieces from her show was the Tuscan Vineyard, and her Potters Shed. She also had a very good Painting of the old Ringgold mill.

Over at the Front Page Deli, they were holding their trivia night to a packed house. But lets save that’s for a future story!

The First Thursday Art Walks are always new and unique, and are a great way to experience new art and artists. If you haven’t been before plan on attending the next walk on July 2nd. This is a great opportunity to directly support the local art community by purchasing some of the pieces you see.

The University now has the Chandler and Price printing press, as well as three cabinets of pristine metal type, typesetting equipment and a selection of printed ephemeral works.

The press was donated by Martha Goldsmith, whose late husband, Arthur Goldsmith, is the namesake of the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection, an entity within the APSU Department of Art and the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.

“Arthur enjoyed playing around with the type,” Martha Goldsmith said. “He liked to collect fine print books and study the type.”

She said she was glad to see the Chandler and Price printing press and typesetting equipment go to a new home that would appreciate the value to arts education and to the production of finely printed artifacts.

“I wanted the press to go to a place where there would be some interest, where people would enjoy them,” Martha Goldsmith said.

The donation will be a welcomed addition to the existing collection of type cases and printing presses that make up the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection at APSU.

The Goldsmith Press is a unique letterpress facility that includes thousands of hand-carved wood letters, typesetting materials and antique printing presses. The wood type was originally created for a New England advertising company, Metropolitan Showprint (est.1890). APSU purchased the collection in 1997.

The letterpress and type collection were named in honor of Arthur Goldsmith – an advocate for public literacy, a lover of books and a long-term supporter of the arts in middle Tennessee. The Goldsmith Press, which has been awarded 10 regional and federal grants, has proven to be a valued teaching tool and a coveted studio for artists, designers and writers.

“The donated press and equipment have special value because it belonged to Arthur,” said Cindy Marsh, professor of art and director of the Goldsmith Press. “His love of books and printing has always been our inspiration.”

The event will occur at noon, Thursday, April 30, the day after Obama’s 100th day in office. The parade will begin with a walk through campus and around the perimeter of the college and will end with a unique recitation of the inaugural address in front of the Browning Building at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by the African American Cultural Center.

Titled “The First 100 Days,” this exhibition will involve 100 students, faculty and volunteers wearing T-shirts bearing a portion of the president’s inaugural address.

The Printmaking III class will print the T-shirts, each containing roughly 25 words of the president’s inaugural address. The inaugural address is 2,383 words in length.

A number of printers in the Nashville region have heard about the project and have volunteered their service to help with the daunting task. Art groups from all across the country have expressed interest in getting involved.

The project began in February with a three-day printmaking event conducted by students in professor Cindy Marsh’s Printmaking III class and visiting print artist Amos Kennedy. During the event, students began the task of printing Obama’s inaugural address on shirts, posters and fabric squares for a quilt.

The event was conceived and initiated by Marsh, director of the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection at APSU, and students in her Printmaking III class.

The Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection is one of the largest collections of wood type in the realm of fine art higher education. Traditionally, wood type was used from 1800-1950 for rural posters announcing traveling shows, county fairs, athletic events, etc. The use of this type was an appropriate choice to celebrate a grassroots president. The press has received nine local, regional and federal grants.

“The First 100 Days” is funded by the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, the APSU Department of Art, the Wilbur N. Daniel African American Cultural and donations from regional printers.

For more information, contact APSU professor of art Cynthia Marsh, (931) 221-7349.
