Water. Seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with it. But in spite of the 326 million cubic miles of water on Earth, many people do not have access to fresh, clean water.

The basic water requirement (BWR) describes the amount of water a person needs per day for domestic purposes: water for drinking, human hygiene, sanitation services and food preparation. The minimum recommended BWR per person is 50 liters—or a little more than 13 gallons. Unfortunately 20 percent of the world’s population only has around 5 liters—or a little more than 1 gallon—each day. ‘Muck Pluckers’ clean up Cumberland river and shoreline

David Boen with tire, Bill Irby in backgroundWhat do a shopping cart, two auto tires and a Leaf Chronicle newspaper box have in common? They were picked up today as litter along the shore of the Cumberland River in downtown Clarksville.

All that, along with chairs, buckets, plastic pipe and about 14 bags of trash, were pulled from the shoreline by a team of volunteers who call themselves the “muck pluckers,” a volunteer team that braved the high heat, humidity and poor air quality to clean one small part of the city. «Read the rest of this article»
