At Custom House: Time Made Real with works by sculptor Tim Lewis

Time Made Real: the Carvings of Tim Lewis, is showing in the Bruner, Crouch and Orgain Galleries through October 31. The exhibit features the life and work of renowned carver Tim Lewis from Kentucky. Lewis is one of America’s premier living self-taught artists.

After this debut at Customs House, selections from the exhibit will travel to the Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, Ohio) and Mennello Museum American Art (Orlando, Florida) before closing the tour at the Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University.

Sixty pieces of Lewis’s work have been gathered from twenty-two public and private collections from across the Southeast and Midwest by guest curators Bruce and Kathy Moses Shelton. Works exemplify the full range of Lewis’s ability to tell a story from his first Noah’s Ark to his most recent, Win, Place & Show, an homage to the Kentucky Derby. Mining the experience of family and home, as well as a trove of legends and beliefs accumulated over a lifetime, Lewis has created a body of work that emerges as a visual narrative rich in its ‘telling.’ «Read the rest of this article»

Duck Stamp exhibit features young artists

An exhibit of Duck Stamp art by area students is now on exhibit at the Custom House Museum in downtown Clarksville.

The exhibit is small, confined to a single wall panel, but features wonderful mixed media drawings and paintings by young artists. The Duck Stamp exhibit is part of a statewide initiative to bring awareness to local wildlife and its ecosystems.

Think Clarksville! Shop Clarksville!

Lately, the national economic news is rather bleak—there’s even been the reluctant mention of the “R” word, but how does it apply to our area? Further, what can we do about it?

According to a new U.S. Census report, the Clarksville TN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area is now the 10th-fastest growing MSA in the nation. Even though the national news may be depressing, our local economy is in good shape. Jimmy Settle, business editor for The Leaf Chronicle, says of the recent slow down in the residential market, “It’s a temporary condition, and should be perceived as more of a correction in the market, than a troubling decline. The truth is, the economy in northern Middle Tennessee is currently one of the nation’s best.”

The other truth is the residents in Clarksville are doing more than their share when it comes to helping the economic growth for surrounding cities and counties. The numbers are quite staggering! (More on those numbers later . . .)

The entire nation is feeling the pain at the gas pump. Gas prices are at an all time high and climbing higher. We’re all thinking about how to save gas, which will then make more money available for the necessary expenses and the extras; extras like dining out, shopping for clothes and home goods, entertainment, and more.
