HUD allocates $1 Billion in Recovery Act funding to support state and local community development

CDBG funding designed to build critical infrastructure and create jobs

Washington – In an effort to stimulate community development and job growth, U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today allocated $1 billion in funding to nearly 1,200 state and local governments through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). These grants will be provided through HUD’s long-standing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and will primarily benefit low- to moderate-income persons living in these communities.

CDBG enables state and local governments to undertake a wide range of activities intended to create suitable living environments, provide affordable housing and create economic opportunities. Under the Recovery Act, recipients shall give priority to prudent projects that can award contracts based on bids within 120 days of the grant agreement.

“Today, we make another investment in the economic recovery of our cities, counties and states,” said Donovan. “President Obama and I are anxious to put this money to work for long-term, sustainable community development. Treasury, HUD announce housing grants funded through Recovery Act

Grants Will Increase Jobs, Provide Boost to Local Housing Economies

Washington – As part of an innovative partnership aimed at job creation and easing the pressures on the housing market, the Department of the Treasury and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today jointly announced programs that will provide billions of dollars in recovery funds to spur the development of thousands of affordable housing units in states around the country. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (The Recovery Act), the programs together will provide approximately $5 billion for states to finance the acquisition and construction of affordable housing for working families.

Through the Recovery Act, the Treasury Department will now for the first time provide state housing agencies resources from which they will in turn provide cash assistance to developers of qualified affordable housing developments to fill the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LITC) gap. The program will increase the supply of newly constructed or recently renovated affordable housing units for families – affordable housing that otherwise may not have come to market due to current economic conditions. «Read the rest of this article»

Kanovsky, Kovar, and Trasviña sworn in as HUD Assistant Secretaries

WASHINGTON – Helen Kanovsky, Peter Kovar and John Trasviña were sworn in Monday as the General Counsel, Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, respectively at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. All three were unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 1, 2009.

County Ad Hoc Committee hears citizens redevelopment ordinance concerns

The county’s Redevelopment Ad Hoc Committee met with community spokespersons recently to address concerns about the city’s redevelopment and urban renewal ordinance.

County Mayor Carolyn Bowers, County Commissioners Ron Sokol, Martha Brockman and Mark Banasiak, comprise the ad hoc committee on the redevelopment plan at the county level.

The ad hoc group met with a group of citizens representing minority community concerns. Attending were the meeting organizer, Terry McMoore, executive director of the Urban Resource Center; his wife Wanda McMoore; Turner McCullough Jr., a local community affairs and grassroots activist; Jimmy M. Garland Sr., Clarksville NAACP branch president and 3rd Vice President of the Tennessee State Conference NAACP; Candy Johnson, candidate for City Council Ward 5, and Pastor Timothy Grant, Deliverance Outreach Temple.
