Nashville – Draughons Junior College has changed it’s name to the Daymar Institute. Draughons, a well‐known and respected junior college in Tennessee offered certificate, diploma and associate degree programs in a variety of disciplines. The name change is in conjunction with a transition to a higher credential‐level which will allow them to also offer Bachelor of Applied Science programs in Business Administration, Business Management, Criminal Justice Administration and Healthcare Administration (program availability varies by campus).

Mark Grabis, president of Draughons Junior College and Daymar College

“Many of our students have chosen to advance their education and earning potential by earning a bachelor degree,” said Mark Gabis, president of Draughons Junior College and Daymar College, “but until now they would have to transition to another institution to do so. Our students have been asking us to offer bachelor programs right here, with friends they know, faculty and staff they trust, and the academic excellence they can count on. We are very pleased to now be able to accommodate their requests through the launch of these new programs.”

Founded in 1879 as a business college in Nashville, Draughons Junior College has locations in Nashville, Clarksville and Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as well as a campus in Bowling Green and learning sites in Clinton and Russellville, Kentucky. In 2000, Draughons joined the Daymar family of colleges, with 13 locations in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana including a fully online campus, and 35 career tracks. Since joining the Daymar family of schools, Draughons has evolved and grown, adding new programs to meet the demands of the market; enhancing student and career services; and opening the Murfreesboro campus in 2003.

As part of the natural evolution of Draughons, the many enhancements over the last decade since it joined the Daymar family of colleges, and the fact that Tennessee law requires a name change to offer these bachelor programs at Tennessee locations, Draughons Junior College will become Daymar Institute on January 1, 2010. Draughons Junior Colleges in Kentucky will be named Daymar College.

“We are deeply proud of Draughons’ long history and exceptional legacy of educational excellence and community service,” said Gabis. “We intend to carry on that legacy as Daymar Institute, maintaining the warm, friendly and nurturing small college atmosphere and commitment to each student’s success.”

The Tennessee campuses will immediately begin accepting applications for the higher‐degree level programs. In early 2010, the campuses will host special events to honor Draughons and to provide additional information on bachelor degree programs. For more information, see the attached Fact Sheet and call 1‐ 877 258‐7796 to speak with an admissions representative.

The event brings local agencies and employers together with hundreds of people who are actively seeking employment.

Some like Barbara Lucas had been looking for work (in the legal field) for over 6 months. She is currently considering returning to school. Jonathan Ligon said he was laid off 5 months ago, since then he has been unsuccessfully looking for work as a welder. Beverly Cossingham unemployed for five months, is looking for an administrative or clerical positions. However, Katie Nolan probably summed it up best. “I am looking for anything at this point, anything”, she said.

Katie Nolen discussing job opportunities with a Wendy Harrison from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Career Center

With the recent economic downtown, layoffs have become an all too common occurrence across middle Tennessee. A good example of this is the Springhill, TN GM plant which made the Chevrolet Traverse that will halt production in November laying off another 2,447 employees.

At the Clarksville Career Center booth they were handing out the listing of available jobs to the job seekers. Wendy Harrison took a minute to speak to us. Things are picking up she said, “The job market is still down, but it’s getting better”.

<a href="http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/img_5016.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" title="Tyrone Taylor speaking with Freda O'Neal from B&F Marketing. Tyrone is interested in locating an accounting job.

Vickie Kloeman, the Administrator of Elections for the Montgomery County Election Commission, was on hand to register people to vote but as she noted, “attendees seemed more interested in jobs, then voting right now”. However, she had signed up eight people to vote. “That’s eight more than we had on the rolls this morning” she said.

Draughons Campus Director Katharine Purnell wanted to say thank you to all of the agencies and employers who attended, “They have simply been wonderful.”
