APSU Football - Austin Peay State UniversityNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University football was picked ninth in the Ohio Valley Conference by a vote of the conference coaches and sports information directors announced Monday at the annual OVC Media Day.

Defending champion Jacksonville State was the top preseason choice for a third straight year, picking up 16 of 18 first-place votes and 128 points total.

Instant Peay Play: Four names added to pantheon of APSU Baseball Draft Picks

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – This past week in New York City, Major League Baseball held its annual amateur draft with four Austin Peay State University (APSU) baseball players having their names called, bring the all-time total to 40 players selected in the draft from APSU since the first Gov was drafted in 1972.

Juniors Ridge Smith (catcher), Logan Gray (third base), Garrett Copeland (second base) and senior pitcher Jared Carkuff were chosen in the 12th, 13th, 30th and 35th rounds, respectively, marking the second time Austin Peay had has as many as four players drafted at one time – and trailing only the 2013 MLB draft were the Govs had five players picked.

Four APSU Govs picked in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player draft, Saturday

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityNew York, NY  – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team saw a quartet of student-athletes drafted in the third day of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, Saturday.

Junior catcher Ridge Smith was the first Governors player to be drafted, hearing his named called in the 12th round (372nd pick) by the Toronto Blue Jays. Junior third baseman/outfielder Logan Gray went next with his hometown Kansas City Royals nabbing him in the 13th round (403rd pick).

2016 OVC Baseball Championship begins Wednesday, May 24th

 

Ohio Valley Conference - OVCBrentwood, TN – The 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship field is now set. The event will be held May 25th-29th at The Ballpark at Jackson (formerly Pringles Park) in Jackson, Tennessee.

This year marks the seventh year in a row the event will be held at the venue, which is home of the Jackson Generals, the AA-affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

An Austin Peay State University track and field team that battled injury, illness and inconsistency throughout the 2016 season and entered the weekend under the radar righted the ship at the perfect moment, securing a third-place team finish at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships.

It’s the third straight season that Austin Peay has finished in the top-three at the OVC Outdoor Championships.

Austin Peay State University Baseball plays UT Martin at home this weekend

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The final home weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play awaits Austin Peay State University’s baseball team when it hosts UT Martin in a three-game series at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The Govs and Skyhawks will begin the set with a 6:00pm, Friday contest followed by a special 6:00pm, Saturday meeting. The weekend will conclude with a 1:00pm, Sunday matchup.

Austin Peay’s Logan Gray selected APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Junior Logan Gray, of the Austin Peay State University baseball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

In hitting .611 (11-for-18) with four home runs, 14 RBI and seven runs scored last week, Gray not only led the Govs to a sweep in their Ohio Valley Conference series against Eastern Kentucky and a midweek win against Lipscomb.

The Leawood, Kansas native earned adidas®/Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Player of the Week, was one of six players named to the Louisville Slugger® National Player of the Week list and was recognized for his good work in Baseball America’s weekly “Off the Bat” report.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Softball’s Danielle Liermann has strong case for OVC honors

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s Danielle Liermann has put together one of the best freshman campaigns in school history for the Governors softball program and with the 2016 season coming to an end this week has made a strong case for being considered for several Ohio Valley Conference honors.

With three games left on this year’s schedule, Liermann – a 5-7, third baseman from Simi Valley, CA – is hitting .369, with nine doubles, a triple and six home runs.
