Austin Peay State University trails in OVC Commissioner’s Cup All-Sport trophy

Brentwood, TN – After the completion of the winter sport championships, Eastern Illinois University has taken the lead in the 2012-13 Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner’s Cup all-sport trophy standings; the Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships.

Austin Peay’s Bruce Myers co-recipient of OVC’s Thurston Banks Award

Brentwood, TN – Dr. Bruce Myers and Dr. Gail Richard have been named the inaugural winners of the Ohio Valley Conference Thurston Banks Award for Distinguished Academic Service.
The award was established to recognize an individual (e.g. academic advisor, professor, tutor, etc.), with at least five years of service at one or more OVC member institutions, for his or her outstanding contributions to OVC student-athletes’ academic success, learning and development as well for his or her overall commitment to the institution’s athletics program.

Charleston, IL – Jimmy Garoppolo threw five touchdown passes, all longer than 50 yards, to lead Eastern Illinois to a 65-15 victory against Austin Peay State University, Saturday afternoon, in Ohio Valley Conference action at O’Brien Field.
The loss left the Govs 0-5 on the season, 0-3 in OVC play.

Governors win overtime game againest Eastern Illinois

Charleston, IL – Eastern Illinois was unable to hold on to a 13 point second half lead as they fell to Austin Peay, 77-73 in overtime, on Saturday night. EIU dropped to 3-5, 1-1 in the OVC. APSU improved to 5-4, 2-0 in the OVC.
The Governors were able to build a seven point lead in the first half as Tyshwan Edmondson drained back-to-back 3-pointers to give APSU a 21-14 lead with 12:47 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by Justin Blake pushed APSU’s lead to 25-16 at the six minute mark. EIU closed the half with a 13-5 run as they trailed 30-29 at the break.

EIU hands Lady Govs basketball first OVC loss

Charleston, IL – A late second half run led to Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team dropping a 79-58 decision to Eastern Illinois, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference play.
While the Lady Govs (2-7; 1-1 OVC) trailed the Panthers for most of the game, they had it in single digits at 53-45 with 10:49 to play after a jumper by sophomore Meghan Bussabarger. However, a bucket by Hillary Held sparked an 18-6 EIU run that finished off the Lady Govs.

Charleston, IL – Under Mike Miller, Eastern Illinois has made a steady climb up the Ohio Valley Conference ladder. Last season, the Panthers finished 19-12 overall and 11-7 in the OVC, tying the Govs for third place.
In the 2010-11 preseason poll, the Panther are picked to finish third behind Murray State and Morehead State and just ahead of the Governors. The Panthers host the Govs at 6:00pm, Saturday, at Lantz Arena.
