After primary apathy, long but fast moving voters lines are “a breath of fresh air”

Kudos to the Election Commission staff for keeping the lines flowing smoothing during these first days of early voting.

As I have for nearly 40 years, I cast my vote today, though having seen the crowds, which includes hundred of new voters, waiting to exercise the privilege and right to vote, I was wondering just how long it would take. Less than 15 minutes. With at least 50 people ahead of me.

Six stations have trained staff ready and waiting to check your credentials, verify your ID, and move you on to a hallway where the ballot is posted for you to review (if you haven’t already). From there, it’s a few steps to the machines, and a few buttons to push.

There is ample parking at the Veteran’s Plaza lot, and the lane leading to the commission door is lined with enthusiastic campaigners and signs. Plenty of handicapped parking slots have been earmarked, and given that the pace of voting is quick, there seems to be a constant availability of handicapped parking slots for those who are mobility impaired.

Remember that no campaign badges, buttons, bumper stickers or other political material can be brought to the voting site, and discussion of the issues and candidates is prohibited in the waiting lines.

Don’t be alarmed at the number of voters ahead of you; it is a finely tuned process that, so far, is doing just what it is supposed to do. There’s no excuse not to vote. Not even the lines.

After the epidemic of primary race voter apathy, the 100-people lines are a breath of fresh air.

Montgomery County Democratic Party

The Montgomery County Democratic Party will host a “get out the vote” rally Saturday at 10 a.m. at Veteran’s Plaza. State legislators and local candidates will join the event in an effort to energize and encourage early voting, which if the first day of early voting is any indicator, will be encouragement falling on willing ears.

After the rally, the group plans to enter the Election Commission as a group and vote for the candidates of their choice.

On Wednesday, the early voting line extended out the door and down the covered walkway, with as many as 60-80 people in line at any given time.

Early voting for Montgomery County for the Presidential, State, General and City Election will begin on October 15 at the Montgomery County Election Commission, Montgomery Veterans Plaza, 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 404. The actual election day is November 4.

Here are the days and times when registered voters can go to the Election Commission office to cast their votes:

Early Voting: October 15 -30, 2008

Wednesday, October 15,Thursday, October 16, and Friday October 17: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, October 18: 8 a.m. to noon.

Monday, October 20, Tuesday, October 21, Wednesday, October 22, Thursday, October 23, and Friday, October 24: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday, October 25: 8 a.m. to noon.

Monday, October 27, Tuesday, October 28, Wednesday, October 29, Thursday, October 30: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Early voting ends on October 30, at 6 p.m., to allow Election Commission officials to set up local polling places for the formal election on the first Tuesday (11/4) of November, 2008.

35 days and counting until Election Day!

The Montgomery County Democratic Party and Clarksville for Obama encourage everyone age 18 and up to register to vote and to encourage their friends to register, by either going to the Election Commission of on Pageant Lane or by registering online at www.ClarksvilleForObama.com .

The last day to register to be eligible to vote in the general election is OCT. 6^th.

An Early Voting Rally will be held October 18 at Veterans Plaza Parking Lot (located near the Public Library) at 10 a.m.. Join all Democrat candidates at a rally setup to encourage early voting and to energize all Democratic Party members. After the rally we will all go inside the Election Commission to vote as a group!
