Dunbar’s Spring Fling: Celebrating nature, wildlife and outdoor exploration

The annual Spring Fling, a celebration of nature, wildlife and outdoor exploration, will be held at Dunbar Cave State Natural Area on Saturday, April 26, rain or shine. All activities begin at the visitor center and are free of charge. The start times of some programs may overlap, and children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Donations accepted. Food, Tee shirts, and membership to Friends of Dunbar Cave can be purchased during the day.

Schedule of events:

7:00-8:30 am – Early Morning Bird Hike: Hike the trails at the park; watch and identify birds with members of the Warioto Audubon Chapter. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them.

8:45-9:45 am – Backpacking with Tennessee Trail Association: Merri Hinton, an experienced backpacker and long-distance hiker, will demonstrate the needed equipment for backpacking, day hiking and camping.

8:45-9:45 am – Bluebirds in your Backyard: Duane Rice, local Audubon Society leader and bluebird expert will talk about how to host Eastern Bluebirds around your home and property. «Read the rest of this article»

Friends of Dunbar Cave spread the mulch

An Aerial view of Swan Lake and the entrance to Dunbar Cave.On March 29th, Friends of Dunbar Cave and other volunteers spread Christmas tree mulch to areas around the dam, parking lot and picnic tables at Dunbar Cave State Natural Area. They started this job at 9 am and were done by noon. The 39 volunteers included members of Den 11, Pack 509, Tiger Den, Pack 565, and many other lovers of the park.

The rain held off in the cool weather. The young worked with the old, all sharing pride in their hard work and accomplishment. The Friends of Dunbar Cave send out a hearty thanks to all who volunteered. «Read the rest of this article»

Clarksville residents interviewed for new Dunbar Cave film

Clean Cut Productions at APSU is making a short introductory film for Dunbar Cave. This film will introduce Dunbar Cave to its visitors and talk about how the cave was formed, its cultural history, and how it is a natural area. The Friends of Dunbar Cave is sponsoring the costs of production.

“I remember when Dizzy Dean, the famous pitcher turned sportscaster, and Joe Namath, came to a huge golf tournament at Roy Acuff’s newly built golf course,” (now Swan Lake Golf Course). “They gave out baseballs with Dizzy Dean’s autograph on them. I think I still have mine somewhere. That was when Joe Namath had just gone pro,” says Jerry Clark in a recent filmed interview at Dunbar Cave State Natural Area.

Clarksville’s Tennessee Trails stays one step ahead in New Year’s resolutions.

Hiking symbolA common New Year’s resolution many of us make is to lose weight, to get more active and healthy. Tennessee Trails - Clarksville, begins their New Year with a two-part tradition they’ve had for around seven years:

They meet on New Year’s Eve at 9 p.m. to walk in the New Year.

The group pictured above joined others in walking walked three to four miles of downtown Clarksville, starting at McGregor Park, using the walking bridge that crosses Riverside and the other sidewalk “trails” created for downtown. They walked up Dog Hill, admiring some of its historic houses, then over to Public Square with its eternal flame and memorial to the soldiers.

They paused to peek in the shop windows along Franklin, then trailed down to Riverside on 2nd Street, over Riverside and across the walking bridge before ending back at the park. Dunbar readies ‘Haunting History’ tours

For the 8th year running, Friends of Dunbar Cave brings Haunting History right before Halloween. Visitors can see exciting and fun skits performed inside Dunbar Cave on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

The $5 per person entry fee goes toward maintaining, preserving and promoting Dunbar Cave State Natural Area. Parking is free.

At different “stages” inside the cave, talented young performers from the Roxy Regional School of the Arts, directed by Roxy regional Theater Stage Manager Ellie Ellis, will presents skits. These historically based vignettes won’t scare you but while being entertained, will offer information about bats and other critters, the haunting history of the cave, and Native American art in the cave.

No reservation is needed. Guided tours leave the Visitor’s Center every 15-20 minutes. «Read the rest of this article»

Bring your family and come attend a day of exciting and informative activities. All of the activities are free of charge and will begin at the Visitors center. Some programs may have start times which will overlap others. These events will be held rain or shine. All children must be supervised by a responsible adult.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Dunbar Cave, the Warioto Chapter of the National Audubon Society, the Tennessee Trails Association, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

The Friends of Dunbar Cave Meeting/Local Historian Randy Rubel to talk about Civil War history and Dunbar Cave

Randy Ruebel, A Local Civil War HistorianOn Thursday, January 18th at 6:30 p.m, The Friends of Dunbar Cave has arranged for local Historian Randy Rubel to talk about Civil War history and Dunbar Cave. This will take place in the visitor center, at the Dunbar Cave State Natural Area. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Amongst other stories, Randy will tell us about the Union soldiers’ barbecue at Dunbar Cave, and how the black community formed what was then known as African Town. He will also be presenting a slide show.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area to unveil archaeological finds at new entrance gate dedication

Historic Indian Art discovered in Dunbar Cave partially covered with more modern graffitiClarksville, TN,  State Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke will visit Dunbar Cave State Park and Natural Area on July 29, 2006 at 10 a.m. CDT for a ceremony to help dedicate the new entrance gate at the cave.

The new gate was made possible through a cooperative effort with the Friends of Dunbar Cave and the State Department of Environment and Conservation, and will help protect the significant archaeological finds inside the cave, while also allowing the public access to see the sights firsthand.
