Austin Peay State University Cross Country teams compete in Rhodes College Invitational, Saturday

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s and women’s cross country teams move forward in the 2016 season, with the Rhodes College Invitational due up Saturday in Memphis.

Needing an additional meet with a gap in the schedule, the Governors added Rhodes to the slate for the first time this decade. The event will be held at Shelby Farms.

The Govs took a big step forward last weekend at the Powerade Invite, with three men’s runners – Daniel Hamm (23rd, 16:12.42), Hezron Kiptoo (24th, 16:14.50) and Tyler Smith (30th, 16:29.96) – finishing in the top 30.

APSU Men's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityCharleston, WV – Austin Peay State University men’s golf rallied in the third round of the Joe Feaganes Invitational, posting its best team score of the tournament at Berry Hills Country Club.

The five-man 292 bettered APSU’s previous best by 11 strokes. Austin Peay posted nearly as many birdies in the third round (13) as they did in the first two rounds combined (16).

Instant Peay Play: APSU’s Kelley Guth has been a constant in Governors 15-year soccer history

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s women’s soccer team celebrated the program’s 15-year anniversary this past weekend, including capping things with a 2-0 victory over Alabama A&M at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

But while players have come and gone over the past decade and a half, the one continual over the years has been head coach Kelley Guth – the only head coach the Govs have ever had in their history.

APSU Men's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf opens its 2016-17 season by heading to Charleston, West Virginia for the Joe Feaganes Invitational, hosted by Marshall.

Nestled along the Appalachian plateau, Berry Hills Country Club will be the site of the two-day, 54-hole event.

Tennessee Tech stuns APSU Governors Football 41-7

APSU Football - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In front of a record crowd at Fortera Stadium of 7,507 fans, Austin Peay State University’s football team dropped its home and Ohio Valley Conference opener to Tennessee Tech, 41-7, Friday night in Fortera Stadium.

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start offensively, scoring their first touchdown less than four minutes into the contest en route to a 28-0 halftime lead on the Govs.

APSU Cross Country Teams show improvement in Chattanooga

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsChattanooga, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s and women’s cross country teams continued to make improvements in the second meet of the season, the Powerade Invite, at the Moccasin Bend Race Course.

The Governors men’s team finished fourth out of six competing schools, while the women claimed sixth of seven spots. Other universities competing in the event were Middle Tennessee, who won both events, Alabama, Chattanooga, Samford, Mercer and Alabama A&M.

Saturday’s meeting is the earliest contest between the two teams in the all-time series.

APSU’s Jay Bowen elevated to assistant basketball head coach

APSU Men's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University head men’s basketball coach Dave Loos announced Tuesday that Jay Bowen has been elevated to assistant head coach.

Bowen, who returned to Austin Peay last season for a second time, has more than 30 years’ experience on the sidelines and is in his third tour of duty alongside Loos—the two coached together at Christian Brothers from 1984-87 and again at Austin Peay in 2001-02.

Instant Peay Play: APSU Football Govs need to build on positives heading into home opener

 

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University may have lost its season opener September 3rd at Troy University, 57-17, but there were several positives that the Governors can build on this week as they prepare for not only their home opener, but their Ohio Valley Conference opener as well versus Tennessee Tech this Saturday, September 10th.

Offensively, the Govs showed they are capable of putting some points on the scoreboard – putting up 17 points on their NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision opponent – the most in six years against a FBS team and the most in a season opener in six years.
