Clarksville, TN – New APSU head coach Kirby Cannon took his football team to Governor’s Stadium for the first day of spring practice today, thus beginning another chapter in Austin Peay football. The weather was brisk, but the squad looked like they were excited to be on the field, as Cannon started laying the groundwork for what hopes to be a winning program.

Clarksville, TN – Despite the program being without a head coach, Austin Peay State University signed 12 players, Wednesday, to National Letters of Intent on the first day of signing for 2013.
“I believe this is one of the finest recruiting classes we had since I have been here,” APSU interim coach Granville Eastman said. “We addressed needs and added some real quality depth to this program.”

Austin Peay Governors Football coach Christophel submits resignation to become NFL Cardinals assistant

Clarksville, TN – It is now official. Rick Christophel, Austin Peay State University‘s football coach the last six seasons, has submitted his resignation in order to become the tight ends coach with the Arizona Cardinals.
“I am excited about starting a new chapter in my coaching career,” Christophel said. “I started thinking about this (coaching in the NFL), talking about this all the way back when I was in high school. What was I going to do with the rest of my life? If I couldn’t play I wanted to coach at the highest level possible.
“This has become a dream come true.”

Govs Football adds Derrick to coaching staff

Clarksville, TN – Paul Derrick, who played wide receiver at Austin Peay from 2002-04, has been hired as assistant football coach with Austin Peay State University, head coach Rick Christophel announced Thursday.
Derrick, who also was a graduate assistant under Christophel during the 2007 season, will work with the Govs secondary. He replaces Dainon Sidney, who resigned last week.

Eastman set to serve week-plus internship with Colts

Clarksville, TN – With the NFL lockout ended, it also means Austin Peay State University defensive coordinator Granville Eastman will be leaving later this week to begin an internship with the Indianapolis Colts.
Eastman, who will begin his ninth season as a Governors assistant, will leave Thursday for Anderson (IN) University and the internship will begin Friday. He will remain with the Colts through Sunday, August 7th, before rejoining the Govs for the first day of practice, Monday, August 8th.

Gary Shephard joins Govs Football Staff as Linebackers Coach

Clarksville, TN - Austin Peay State University head football coach Rick Christophel announced the addition of longtime coaching-cohort and APSU alum Gary Shephard as the team’s new assistant coach, Wednesday. Shephard will take over as linebackers coach effective immediately.
Adding Shephard means reorganizing the defensive coaching staff, and Christophel is pleased with the moves it will allow to him make. Granville Eastman will move from linebackers to the secondary, while also remaining the team’s defensive coordinator.
