Austin Peay State University Baseball’s Craig Massoni, Tyler Rogers sweep OVC Postseason Awards
May 22, 2013 |
Jackson, TN – For the third time in program history Austin Peay State University’s baseball team can celebrate a sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference’s top awards. Junior first baseman Craig Massoni was named the league’s Player of the Year and senior closer Tyler Rogers was named its Pitcher of the Year at the annual OVC Baseball Awards Banquet held Tuesday night.
“I’m not sure I have a word that is good enough to describe what these two men meant to our team,” said Austin Peay head coach Gary McClure. “Having Tyler involved in 27 decisions over 42 wins is incredible. And on the other hand, Craig was a guy who hit almost .500 in league play and didn’t do it with singles – he did it with doubles and home runs.

On precipice of becoming OVC’s wins leader, Gary McClure to be inducted into APSU Athletics Hall

Clarksville, TN – When Billy Merkel stepped down as Austin Peay State University baseball coach in Fall 1987, then-athletics director Bob Brooks had a decision to make: begin a search for a replacement, possibly interrupting fall practice and workouts, or name Gary McClure, the program’s graduate assistant, as interim coach.
It would be unfair to call Governors baseball an afterthought back then-APSU only had one Ohio Valley Conference title (1972) prior to that, but it certainly was not at the forefront of any APSU athletics discussions.
