49 APSU Student Athletes Receive Degrees

 

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN - A record 1,222 students were conferred degrees, Friday, as Austin Peay State University held its 84th Spring Commencement in the Dunn Center and 49 of those were Govs and Lady Govs student-athletes.

The morning commencement saw students earn degrees from the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science and Mathematics and the School of Technology and Public Management will participate in commencement.

Austin Peay Governors Football are on the road this weekend to face No. 15/18 Virginia Tech

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBlacksburg, VA – In the last three years Austin Peay has played Big 10 (Wisconsin) and Big East (Cincinnati) programs for the first time in University history. This weekend the Governors will play an Atlantic Coast Conference school for the first time when they travel to Blacksburg, VA, to face Virginia Tech.

Kickoff will occur 12:34pm, CDT from Lane Stadium, considered one of most difficult places in the country to play for visiting teams. For a second straight week, APSU will have a game broadcast by ESPN3. John Sadak and John Gregory will have the call while Rontina McCann will serve as sidelines reporter.

Austin Peay Governors Football’s Antwaun has proven to be a Major pain to opponents

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – The smallest man in Austin Peay’s secondary is also the most respected player on the Governors defense.

Little has come easy for senior safety Antwaun Majors, a 5-9, 170-pound fifth-year senior. Despite twice earning Region Defensive Player of the Year Award and the prestigious Nick Coutras Award while at Mt. Juliet High School, he came to Austin Peay as a walk-on.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – With spring break behind it, Austin Peay State University’s football team, buoyed by a veteran group returning, will hit the football field for spring football practice. Practice will commence 3:45pm, Tuesday, in Governors Stadium.

The Govs will practice two days—Tuesday and Wednesday—in shorts before putting on the pads this weekend.

Football Govs inconsistent in first scrimmage

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Inconsistency was the key word from both sides of the football after Austin Peay State University‘s first scrimmage, Monday morning, at Governors Stadium.

The offense tallied six plays of 25 or more yards while the defense produced 16 plays that resulted in negative yards in a scrimmage that saw 85 plays run. The offense finished with 13 first downs and three scores while the defense failed to produce a turnover, although defensive personnel did block an early field-goal attempt.

Govs second football scrimmage to be held on Morgan Brothers Soccer Field

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TNAustin Peay State University’s football team will scrimmage approximately 9:20am, Saturday.

However, if interested fans show up at Governors Stadium, they will be watching APSU’s track meet.

If they want to find the football scrimmage, they will have to venture out to Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

For the first time since the former Austin Peay football practice field was converted into the home of the Lady Govs soccer team will APSU’s football team scrimmage on grass—APSU has used it for occasional practices in the past. The Tennessee Titans did use the soccer field for scrimmages when they were in Clarksville for training camp in 2006.

Austin Peay Governors football vs. Murray State Racers

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Thirteen seniors will be honored prior to kickoff on Senior Day.

Since rejoining the Ohio Valley Conference the Governors own a 1-2 record against Murray State. The Govs lost in Murray, 27-17, in 2009.

Austin Peay enters the contest on a six-game losing streak. The Govs have endured at least a six-game losing streak five times since the new millennium, the longest losing streak (eight games) coming in the 2003 season.

Senior running back Terrence Holt made his first career start at running back against UT Martin. Even though he has shared the running back duties with Ryan White for the past two seasons, the latter always has drawn the starting nod until last Saturday.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Since rejoining the Ohio Valley Conference the Governors own a 1-1 record against Eastern Illinois. The Govs won 15-13 in Charleston two years ago but lost at home 30-20 last season.

Austin Peay enters the contest on a four-game losing streak. The Govs have endured at least a four-game losing streak in seven of the last eight seasons.

Austin Peay comes into the game ranked 111th (out of 117 teams) or higher in four defensive categories–rushing defense (117th/260.00 ypg), total defense (113th/455.43 ypg), scoring defense (116th/40.86 ppg) and sacks (115th/.71). The Governors have permitted five teams to rush for more than 200 single-game yards, including Jacksonville State, which finished with 307 yards rushing. «Read the rest of this article»
