Lady Govs volleyball to face Illinois at NCAA Touranment

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will play at No. 8 Illinois, Friday, in Champaign, IL, during the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship, as announced by the NCAA, Sunday, on ESPNews.

Not only will this be the Lady Govs first trip to the NCAA tournament, it as well will be the first for head coach Haley Janicek, who might be the youngest head coach in the NCAA at only 23-years-old.

A former All-Western Athletic Conference player at the University of Idaho, Janicek joined the Austin Peay staff as an assistant under then-head coach Mike Johnson, in 2009, following her husband’s transfer to the 101st Airborne Division. When Johnson departed, the program opted to promote Janicek to lead the program in a move that has paid off.

Lady Govs volleyball returns home for fourth OVC home weekend

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team, second in the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season race with five matches remaining, prepares for its fourth home conference weekend when it hosts Jacksonville State in a 7:00pm, Friday contest followed by a 2:00pm, Saturday match against Tennessee Tech.

Friday’s contest against Jacksonville State is the volleyball program’s designated “Pack the Peay” night. The APSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee sponsors the “Pack the Peay” event as an opportunity for all Austin Peay students to enjoy the various athletic contests throughout the academic year. Students attending Friday’s volleyball match will have the opportunity to receive free food with their valid student identification card.

Lady Govs volleyball knocks off last of OVC unbeatens

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Playing its third consecutive five-set match, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team handed Ohio Valley Conference leading Morehead State its first league loss, 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9), Friday night at the Dunn Center.

Trailing 2-1 entering the fourth set, Austin Peay (16-4, 7-2 OVC) saw its offense respond with errorless efforts in both the fourth and fifth sets. The Lady Govs recorded 14 kills and a .412 attack percentage in the fourth set. They followed that with nine kills and a match-best .474 attack percentage in the fifth set.

Lady Govs seek to stem road woes at Tennessee State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will look to end a two-match road losing streak when it meets Tennessee State in a 7:00pm, Friday, Ohio Valley Conference contest at Kean Hall in Nashville Tennessee.

Austin Peay (14-4, 5-2 OVC) has lost its last two road outings in five sets, falling at Jacksonville State, September 25th, and at Eastern Kentucky, Tuesday. The Lady Govs led both matches 2-1 before surrendering the fourth and fifth sets. Austin Peay was its own worst enemy in both contests, committing uncharacteristic errors on offense and struggling to keep serves in.

Lady Govs travel to Eastern Kentucky

 

APSU Women’s Volleyball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team will look to remain in contact with the league’s top teams when it faces Eastern Kentucky in a 5:00pm (CT), Tuesday contest at McBrayer Arena in Richmond, KY.

Austin Peay (14-3, 5-1 OVC) won both matches in its recent two-match OVC homestand, sweeping both Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois. Tuesday’s contest will be the Lady Govs sixth true road game this season and they have enjoyed some success in hostile arenas, posting a 3-2 record on the road this season.

Lady Govs survive slow start, down Eastern Illinois

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team had to hang on during a rough start, but finished with a flourish to down Eastern Illinois in three sets (26-24, 25-20, 25-10), in Ohio Valley Conference action, Saturday, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (14-3, 5-1 OVC) found itself in a battle from the match’s first serve as visiting Eastern Illinois jumped out to a 6-3 lead courtesy kills by Reyane Hutchinson, Jorie Dieter and Kelsey Orr. Sherrod tops OVC field at Louisville, named Athlete of the Week

 

Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Senior Luke Sherrod, of the Austin Peay State University men’s golf team, tallied a 15th-place finish at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, last Tuesday, and has been named the Copies in a Flash Athlete of the Week.

Luke Sherrod Against a difficult field at the Louisville tournament, Sherrod improved in position each round before closing the tournament with the Govs only under-par round. That final-round 70 allowed him to finish at one-over par for the event.

Out of the four participating Ohio Valley Conference teams, Sherrod was the top performer in the event and named the OVC Golfer of the Week.

Thus far, Sherrod has been the Govs top performer. He was one of two Govs to finish under par at the Marshall Invitational and, last week he overcame a windy day on a tough course to complete his climb. «Read the rest of this article»

Inconsistency plagues Lady Govs in loss at Jacksonville State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsJacksonville, AL – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team was unable to solve Jacksonville State losing a five-set match (20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 13-15) in Ohio Valley Conference action at Mathews Coliseum. It is the third consecutive five-set match the two teams have played in the series, the Gamecocks winning all three.

Jacksonville State (8-7, 3-1 OVC) needed a 6-1 set-ending burst to win the opening set, 25-20. The set saw the teams trade the lead five times, but neither team could gain more than a three-point advantage until the final JSU burst. Austin Peay led by two points, 9-7, early and had an 18-17 lead late, but committed six errors (three attack, two reception and one setting) in the final run.

Lady Govs return to OVC play with crucial road trip

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Two dangerous opponents await Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team as they return to Ohio Valley Conference play, Friday and Saturday. The Lady Govs will travel to Tennessee Tech for a 7:00pm, Friday contest before visiting defending OVC champion Jacksonville State in a 2:00pm, Saturday match. Both matches can be seen on OVCSports.tv, the league’s live streaming video site.

Austin Peay (11-2, 2-0 OVC) will look to bounce back from a three-set loss to Lipscomb, Tuesday, in Clarksville. It was the Lady Govs first loss since losing to Mississippi State, August 27th – the season’s first day. Austin Peay’s offense had a particularly bad night, as Lipscomb held it to a season-low .114 attack percentage. Sophomore Nikki Doyle, the OVC “Offensive Player of the Week,” led the Lady Govs with 10 kills.

Lady Govs unable to stop Lady Bisons stampede

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team had few answers for visiting Lipscomb’s offensive onslaught, losing a  three-set decision (25-12, 25-17, 25-18), in non-conference action, Tuesday night, at the Dunn Center.

The Lady Bisons quickly showed they weren’t suffering a hangover from that experience, leading all three sets wire-to-wire.

Austin Peay (11-2) could not find its rhythm on either offense or defense. The offense was limited to just 31 kills and a season-low .147 attack percentage. Sophomore Nikki Doyle found some success, recording a team-best 10 kills, but also committed four errors and finished with a .214 attack percentage. «Read the rest of this article»
