One of the fun experiences I have is researching odd facts on the Internet. I recently looked at some statistics on the “top 10 jobs in America.” Here are a few bits of information I learned:

Lists vary on the top two jobs. Some say Surgeon and others say Anesthesiologist. Salaries for each range from roughly $175,000 to $185,000 on average. (Note: This means that some of these people make much more and some make much less.) At least one list stated that Investment Bankers were second. The most common list of the top 10 highest paying jobs follows.

Obstetricians

Obstetricians and Gynecologists generally place third with about $172,000 a year. Then come Orthodontists (those who place braces in our mouths!) at about $163,000 annually. They are followed by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (teeth pullers) at around $161,000. Internists (specialists in adult internal medicine) come in just under $161,000.

Prosthodontists (dentists who replace teeth, make bridges, etc.) are considered seventh in the list at approximately $159,000 a year. Eighth are Psychiatrists who make about $150,000 annually. Ninth are Family and General Practitioners are reputed to make around $110,000, and finally Chief Executives at tenth place make about $145,000. (Obviously, this list does not take into consideration those CEOs making multimillions in bonuses every year!!!)

One list of the highest paying jobs for people without a college degree names Railroad Conductors and Yardmasters; Flight Attendants; Real Estate Sales Agents; Railroad Brake, Signal and Switch Operators; Pile-Driver Operators; Chemical Plant and System Operators; Subway and Streetcar Operators; Commercial Divers; Gas Compressor and Gas Pumping Station Operators; and Brickmasons and Blockmasters.

First Responders

Another no college degree required list claims these top ten: Air Traffic Controller (about $102,000 a year!); Storage and Distribution Manager; Transportation Manager; Police and Detectives Supervisor; Non-retail Sales Manager; Forest Fire Fighting and Prevention Supervisor; Municipal Fire Fighting and Prevention Supervisor; Real Estate Broker; Elevator Installers and Repairer; and Sales Representative.

When it comes to top paying jobs for people with no high school diploma, one list insists the following are at the top: Bailiffs ($36,500); Drafters ($36,000); Industrial Production Managers (36,000); Construction Managers ($33,500); and Electricians ($32,000). This list could be wrong!

Information technology jobs seem to come into an area where only a high school diploma or G.E.D. is required. Depending on someone’s skills in these areas, it is not uncommon to make a six-figure income. These jobs just don’t necessarily fit at the top or bottom of anyone’s list.

Worst paying job lists include Fast Food Cooks; Food Prep and Servers; Cafeteria Attendants; Dishwashers; Waiters and Waitresses; Shampooers; Gaming Dealers; Food Counter Attendants; Hosts and Hostesses; and Amusement and Recreation Attendants.

You might notice that education level can make a tremendous difference in the amount of money most people can expect to make. Most of these highly successful people can thank a teacher somewhere in their past for helping them step up to a higher salary. (Notice that teachers do not hit any charts!)

Here’s a surprise. I found one list that asserted the following have the highest job satisfaction: Singers; Municipal Fire Fighters; Aircraft Assemblers; Pediatricians; College Professors in Communications: Educational, Vocational and School Counselors; Managers and Supervisors of Animal Husbandry and Animal Care Workers; Criminal Investigators and Special Agents; College Instructors; and Therapists.

One fact you can’t ignore, however. Bill Gates, one of the richest men on the planet, doesn’t even have a high school diploma.

Think about it. It’s not what you’re taught, but what you do with it that counts!

Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn held a town hall meeting yesterday afternoon with her constituents. During the roughly hour long meeting Blackburn repeatedly expressed her opposition to the Democrats’ health-care reform principles. The meeting was quiet and orderly. Blackburn punctuated her responses using frequent Republican Party talking points, like not allowing bureaucrats to stand between patients and their doctors and hospitals. In all fairness, it must be said that is exactly what Health Insurance companies do on a daily basis. She also expressed her support for leaving the for-profit insurance companies in overall control of the health care system.

Blackburn took questions from the audience on topics ranging from the obvious questions on healthcare reform to lobbying, the growing number of cabinet Czar positions, immigration reform, tort reform, and emergency room misuse. Many members of the audience raised their hands to ask questions, however just a select few were able to ask them. Of those, the majority of those who were allowed to ask questions supported Blackburn positions on healthcare reform, however that could easily be a result of how those questioners were selected.

The Civic Hall was packed for Marsha Blackburn's Town Hall meeting

Blackburn presented some unbelievable numbers, including a claim that 4,000,000 jobs would be lost if H.R. 3200 was made into law. The high cost of healthcare and other benefits are frequently cited as the primary concerns holding businesses back from hiring more employees. She also did not address the ever increasing amount of money made by the C.E.O’s and top executives of the health insurance companies, which is paid for by increasing their customers premiums each year. (The numbers and C.E.O.’s below are from 2008)

Aetna – Ron Williams – $24,300,112

Amerigroup – James Carlson - $5,292,546

Centene – Michael Neidorff - $8,774,483

CIGNA – H. Edward Hanway – $12,236,740

Coventry Health Care – Dale Wolf – $9,047,469

Health Net – Jay Gellert – $4,425,355

Humana – Michael McCallister – $4,764,309

UnitedHealth Group – Stephen Hemsley – $3,241,042

Universal American – Richard Barasch – $3,503,702

WellPoint – Angela Braly – $9,844,212

These 9 CEO’s made the as much as 2,521 families living in Clarksville, TN ($33,885 per family). Their salaries ate up the combined yearly premiums of 29,547 Tennesseans (Average per individual $2891.25).

In the end, those who went into yesterday’s town hall meeting opposing healthcare reform still, oppose it. Those who went in supporting it, still support it. There is one point that everyone can agree on, doing nothing is not an option!

The Clarksville-Montgomery County Voters Council has thrown its support to Senator Rosalind Kurita (D-Clarksville) in the Democratic Primary for Senate District 22. The endorsement was made at a rally held at New Providence Outreach Center. The council is a voter advocacy group focused on minority issues.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Voters Council,” Kurita said. “I am and will continue to be a staunch advocate for women, minorities, children and seniors in the state legislature.” Senator Kurita is speaker pro tempore of the Senate.

On the heels of that endorsement, the National Federation of Independent Business, Tennessee’s leading small business advocacy association, also announced its endorsement of incumbent Rosalind Kurita in Senate District 22. Sen. Kurita has been a strong supporter of the needs of her small business constituents, NFIB/Tennessee State Director Jim Brown said.

“I am honored to have the support of the National Federation of Independent Business. I will do everything I can to pass legislation that encourages small businesses to grow and continue creating jobs.” — Sen. Rosalind Kurita

Brown noted Sen. Kurita’s co-sponsorship of an important healthcare reform bill, SB 4014, as an example of her outstanding leadership. The legislation, which passed this year, will enable certain small businesses and their employees to join small group health cooperatives to spread risk and obtain better predictability of health insurance rates. Sen. Kurita also voted for regulatory flexibility for small business in 2006, the comprehensive workers’ compensation reforms of 2004, and the CoverTN health insurance program that offers an affordable and portable option for certain small businesses.

Kurita is speaker pro tempore of the Senate. She is vice chair of the Senate General Welfare, Health & Human Resources Committee and a member of the following committees: Transportation, Rules, Finance, Ways & Means, Joint Veterans Affairs, Joint Workers’ Compensation and Joint Select Oversight Committee on Education. She is a registered nurse.

House District 22 encompasses Cheatham, Houston and Montgomery counties. The primary will be held Thursday, Aug. 7. The general election will be held Nov. 4.

NFIB’s endorsement is important for Kurita. Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB has pledged it will activate its grassroots network on Sen. Kurita’s behalf. NFIB’s political support is based on the candidate’s position and record on small-business issues. Rosalind Kurita’s endorsement comes from NFIB/Tennessee SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the political action committee for NFIB/Tennessee’s membership. The endorsement brings the considerable grassroots support of Tennessee’s small-business owners to Rosalind Kurita’s campaign.
