Clarksville Community Centers in full swing

All three of the Clarksville community centers are in full swing with after school and evening activities.  The youth basketball league began Thursday at the Burt-Cobb Community Center and will continue every Thursday from 4:30-6p.m. through October.  The league is for youth ages 11-17.  Players will be divided into age groups and placed on teams.

For youth who are looking to expand their artistic skills, Kids on Crafts is the ideal class for them.  Classes begin tomorrow at all three community centers from 3-4:30p.m.  The class is led by art instructors who teach kids a wide variety of artistic skills.  The class lasts ten weeks and finishes with an art show to display what the kids created during the course.  The cost for the class is free.

On Wednesday nights, adults ages 18+ are welcome to enjoy open volleyball games at the Burt-Cobb Center.  Games begin at 6:30p.m. and conclude at 9p.m.  Games are informal and are a great way to have fun while getting exercise.

Along with the evening programs at the community centers, youth and adults can stop by to use the computer lab, lift weights, play on the racquetball court and enjoy the game room.  Use of the community centers (and participation in any classes at the centers) requires an I.D. that can be purchased for $5 at any of the community centers.  The I.D. is good for an entire year.

Stay tuned for other new and exciting activities and classes that are set to begin at the community centers in the near future.  Some of these include ballroom dancing, aerobics, cheerleading, toddler activities and more.  Continue to check out our website at www.cityofclarksville.com/parksandrec for newly added classes.

We hope everyone will join us Saturday, August 29 for this month’s Movie in the Park.  We are excited to show a movie that has quickly gained widespread following all across the United States.  This month’s feature is “a modern day tale of forbidden love between Edward and Bella.”  Any guesses?

Pre-show activities, including games for kids, begin at 6p.m.  Christy’s School of Performing Arts will display some of their talented dancers at 7:15p.m. and the movie is set to begin right after sunset.  If you have not been to this community favorite series Movies in the Park, this is one you do not want to miss.

Don’t miss the Downtown Market

This week’s Downtown Market theme is “Share a Recipe” week.  Vendors and other friends of the market have submitted their favorite recipes that will be featured in a cookbook.  The cookbook will be available at the market for only $5.  Junior Auxiliary of Clarksville will also be at the market selling their cookbook.  This is a great week to pick up a cookbook and explore some of the new ways to prepare your favorite foods.

Along with the wide variety of home grown produce, freshly baked pies, homemade soaps, bread, candles, beautiful stained glass and jewelry,  the Downtown Market is very excited to have on-site charcoal portraits next Saturday.

Summer Youth Program

Thanks to everyone who joined us throughout the weekend for Jammin’ in the Alley, the Downtown Market and Movies in the Park.  We had a great time and hope to see everyone at future events.

Adult Softball

Registration for the Fall Adult Softball League began this past week.  Deposits of $100 will continue to be accepted through July 24 at the Parks and Recreation office.  Each league is limited to 24 teams so be sure to get your deposit in early.  No late registrations will be accepted.

The Summer Adult Softball League just recently wrapped up for the season.  Congratulations to Radical Mission for placing first in the Monday Men’s League Tournament and to Hilldale Baptist #2 for taking second place.  In the Men’s Wednesday Night League Tournament, LLD/BSAS took first place, and second place went to the Line Drive Team.

Congratulations to these guys, and we hope to see everyone again next season.

Concerts in the Park

The Red River Breeze

It is time again to enjoy Concerts in the Park.  If you have not been, this is a great atmosphere to relax, enjoy live music and spend time with friends.  This month’s concert features The Red River Breeze.  Their music is a unique combination of Celtic and old fiddle music.

The concert starts at 6p.m. at McGregor Park.   Edelweiss Club will have concessions available for concert goers to purchase during the show.

Downtown Market

Join us Saturday at the Downtown Market for a day dedicated to kids… and parents, too.  The market theme is Kids’ Health and Wellness.  Parks and Recreation will be on hand to provide information on kid related exercises, activities and fun recipes.  Kids can also enjoy hula hooping and jump roping while the adults make their purchases at the market.

If you are looking for fresh fruit or vegetables to make that homemade pie or favorite side dish, this is another great week to stop in.  Vendors will have a wide variety of fresh produce.  If cooking isn’t your thing, the market will also offer items that have already been prepared.  You can find homemade pies, breads, sweet treats and more.

The Downtown Market takes place every Saturday from 8a.m. to 1p.m. at 1 Public Square.

Riverfest Fish Naming Contest

We are still seeking the public’s help in naming the Riverfest fish.  The fish became our official mascot last year at the 2008 Riverfest Celebration, but was never given a name.  If you have a suggestion, we would like for you to share it.  And if your name is chosen, you win a 2009 Riverfest VIP Package.

Billy Dunlop Park closed

Billy Dunlop Park will be closed to the public July 13 through July 25.  Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be using the park on these days.  The park will be open to the public on July 25 at noon.  We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.  Feel free to visit any of the other parks.

Pre-show activities for Movies in the Park will begin at 6 p.m. and the movie will begin at dark. We cannot tell you the name of the movie, but we can provide you with this hint: this movie is for everyone who has waited to be chosen and wasn’t. Your day has come with the 1994 classic where little football players become giants in this feature presentation.

Games and activities will be available for the kids to enjoy before the movie, and Natalie’s Dance Network will provide pre-show entertainment at 7:15p.m. So, come early to save your spot and enjoy the fun activities before the movie begins. Be sure to bring your picnic blankets and lawn chairs. As always, you are welcome to bring your picnic basket, but concessions will be available. Admission to the movie is free.

Adult Softball Coaches Meeting Today

Fall Adult Softball League coaches are meeting this afternoon to discuss the upcoming season and vote on several league-specific rules.  The meeting begins at 1:30p.m. at the Burt-Cobb Center.

Registration for the league begins July 13.  Deposits are $100 per team and will continue to be accepted until July 24 at the Parks and Recreation Department.

Weekend Events

We hope to see everyone this Friday and Saturday night for a couple of fun weekend events. Friday night is Jammin’ in the Alley on Strawberry Alley in Downtown Clarksville.  This month’s free concert features Chris Robertson and The Country Music Band.  The concert begins at 7p.m.  Come early to grab dinner at Front Page Deli, Brunies, or Edwards.

The Downtown Market is going to the dogs next Saturday, July 18.  The market theme will be “Dog Days” with the Clarksville-Montgomery County Humane Society providing fun activities for dogs and their human companions.  A Bobbing for Balls game, Italian Ice for dogs, and an information booth are a few of the things you will find. The group is also bringing pets that are available for adoption or in need of foster homes.

Aside from furry friends, the market will feature baked goods, jewelry, homemade crafts and more.  If you are looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, this is a great week to stop by.  Fresh produce will be abundant at the market this weekend.  So, bring your dog and enjoy everything the Downtown Market has to offer.

Youth Recreation Softball League

The Youth Recreation Softball League wrapped up its season July 9.  Parks and Recreation would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who helped make this season successful.  Coaches, assistant coaches and parents volunteered their time to help 330 children who participated in the league.  We hope everyone will participate again next year.

Sign ups for next year’s Youth Recreation League begin in February 2010.

Hershey Track and Field Winners

Clarksville should be very proud of one of their own youth for qualifying for the 2009 North American Hershey Track and Field Finals.  Bethany Rich advanced from District competition through Regional and State to qualify for the national competition in the 11-12 Year Old Girls Long Jump event.

Please be sure to congratulate Bethany and all the other Hershey Track and Field participants.  We look forward to seeing all the kids again next year.

The Downtown Market and Boy Scouts of America are continuing their support of The Fisher House this coming Saturday.  Boy Scouts of America will be joining us again to collect donations for the organization.  The Fisher House is place where families of wounded service members can stay while their loved one is undergoing prolonged treatment and recovery at the Veteran Affairs Hospital.

Donations in the form of canned goods, boxed food and monetary donations will be accepted.  This is an excellent way to show your patriotism and appreciation for our soldiers and their families even after the Independence Day holiday.

Just like weekends past, the Downtown Market will offer a variety of locally produced items.  Nursery stock, fresh produce, homemade crafts and baked goods are just a few items that will be available at the market this weekend.   The market continues growing, and we would like to thank the Clarksville community for making it such a success.

Summer Youth Starts Winding Down

The Summer Youth Program will begin wrapping up next week.  Kids have enjoyed learning about new cultures, creating arts and crafts, learning how to eat healthy, working on golf skills, acting lessons, swimming and much more.

Summer Youth Program sites will close next Thursday afternoon, but the fun does not end there.   On Thursday, Summer Playhouse students will put on their final performance of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ for parents and friends at Roxy Regional Theatre.  Then, on Friday night the Summer Youth Program will hold a “Family Night Out” for the students and their families.  If your child participated in the Summer Youth Program, we hope you will join us for this night of fun and activities.

Jammin’ in the Alley

This month’s Jammin’ in the Alley takes place Friday, July 17.  Local musician Chris Robertson will entertain the crowd on Strawberry Alley.  Like months past, restaurants on Strawberry Alley will offer outdoor dining to concert goers.  Beginning this month, Jammin’ in the Alley will begin at 7p.m. instead of the usual 6p.m.  But, come early to save a seat for you and your friends.

Riverfest Regatta Race

At Parks and Recreation, we are already gearing up for the 2009 Riverfest Celebration on September 11 and 12.  The popular Riverfest Regatta Race will take place for the third time this year.  Now is the time to gather up your team and begin building the perfect cardboard boat.

In case you missed the Regatta the past two years, it is an event where participants work in teams to build boats out of cardboard and other approved materials such as duct tape, silicon sealant, construction adhesive and paint.  Organizations, businesses and other groups can build their boats and enter them in the race.  Teams compete with others to finish the 100 yard course on the Cumberland River first.

Teams are separated into several different divisions: Adult Open, Business & Industry, Church/Civic Organization and Military. Prizes are awarded to first, second and third place teams in each division.  While winning is a great accomplishment, looks do make a difference. All boats will be judged prior to the races beginning, as well.

It is a fun for event for participants and spectator alike, so you will not want to miss it.

This weekend when you stop by the Downtown Market, you can help a good cause. Boy Scouts of America will be collecting donations for The Fisher House of Fort Campbell. Summer Youth Program

A summer youth program participant and staff member.

This year’s Summer Youth Program began June 8.  So far, the kids are having a great time playing with friends and learning new things at their program sites. The program has continued to grow over the years. This year all but three of the sites are filled to capacity.

If you would like for your child to participate in the remainder of the Summer Youth Program, there are still a few spaces available. Burt Elementary, Liberty Elementary and Byrns Darden have a limited number of spaces available. If you would like to enroll your child, you can take him or her to one of the sites to register.

Hershey Track and Field

The Hershey Track and Field Competition took place June 20. Six local youth athletes advanced to and competed in the state level competition. All six of these participants finished in the top three of their categories. Bethany Rich placed first in the 11-12 Year Old Girls’ Standing Long Jump. Caitlyn Rich received first place in the 13-14 Year Old Girls’ Softball Throw. Alaysia Johnson competed in the 9-10 Year Old Girls’ category winning first place in the Softball Throw, second in the 50 Meter Dash and third in the 100 Meter Dash.

Congratulations to all the young Clarksvillians who competed in the State Competition.

Movies in the Park was held on Saturday evening. Well over a hundred people showed up to catch a free screening of the animated feature Madagascar 2 Escape to Africa. The pre-show games included a limbo contest for youths and adults. The next movies in the Park will be held at Heritage Park on Saturday July 18th 2009.

Independence Day Celebration

The City of Clarksville will be celebrating our nation’s independence this Friday night at McGregor Park. This is the third year for the Independence Day Celebration, and it is expected to be better than ever.

Performers Traci Koon, Diana Pelham, The Groove Fellas and the 198th Army Band will provide live music throughout the evening. The night will culminate with an 18 minute fireworks show, the largest in Clarksville.

Food vendors will be offering a wide variety of favorite foods like kettle corn, hotdogs, smoothies, homemade ice cream, cheesecake on a stick, shaved ice, schnitzel and more.

Event guests are encouraged to park at the Austin Peay State University Dunn Center. The Clarksville Transit System will be providing free transportation to and from the event. The first bus leaves for McGregor Park at 5:30p.m., and the last will leave McGregor promptly at 10:15p.m. following the fireworks display.

In order to prepare for Friday night’s event, McGregor Park will be closed to the public prior to the event beginning Thursday night at 8p.m.

Summer Youth Programs

Participants in the Summer Youth Program are having a blast so far! Kids are learning new things, making new friends and most importantly having fun! According to Burt-Cobb Community Center site director Laconza Gilliam, students at her location are enjoying the daily activities. Gilliam says “We have had great fun so far with group games and dodge ball.” Gilliam says her site will also be having a Beach Party in the Park next week for the younger kids.

Students at the other eleven Summer Youth Program sites are having a great time, as well. Site directors are working hard to see that this year’s Summer Youth Program is the best yet.

This week the Downtown Market is celebrating businesses in Downtown Clarksville. Lovin’ Spoonful Cafe will be this week’s guest vendor offering samples of their delicious cuisines to Downtown Market patrons.

The market will have information on and directions to Downtown Clarksville establishments. You never know what you might find when you discover Downtown Clarksville.

As always, the Downtown Market will host a variety of vendors again this weekend. It is the perfect place to find one of a kind homemade jewelry to match that summertime outfit or the fresh fruits for that homemade dessert.

It is time to enjoy another Movie in the Park this weekend! Get out your lawn chairs and call all your friends for a night of fun and relaxation. Pre-movie activities begin at 6p.m. with games for children to enjoy. Concessions will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own picnic baskets for your family to share. The movie will begin at dark. As the summer nights get longer, it is difficult to know exactly when the sun will set. But, don’t worry. There will be plenty to keep you preoccupied before it begins.

This month’s movie is a favorite among both kids and adults. You will have to wait until the night of the show to find out what movie will be playing. But, we can offer you this clue: Travel to Africa with a group of New York Zoo animals in this animated sequel to the block-buster feature from 2007. Any guesses?

Independence Day Celebration

Even though it is still a few weeks away, the City of Clarksville is already gearing up for its annual Independence Day Celebration. Friday, July 3 McGregor Park will be filled with food, fun and entertainment for the entire family.

Activities begin at 6p.m. Live music from performers such as Diana Pelham, Traci Koon, The Groove Fellas and the 198th Army Band will be played throughout the night. The night will finish with a spectacular fireworks finale, the largest in Clarksville.

If fireworks are not your thing, the food is reason enough to come to the celebration. Several vendors will offer a variety of favorite foods including kettle corn, hotdogs, smoothies, homemade ice cream, cheesecake on a stick, shaved ice, schnitzel and more.

Bring your friends, family and appetite for an Independence Day Celebration you won’t soon forget.

Famous American writer Edwin Way Teale once said, “The world’s favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May.”  At Parks and Recreation, we couldn’t agree more. May has a way of drawing us out of our shells to enjoy the outdoors, as well as bringing the joy of knowing summer is right around the corner. It is our hope that you will join us as we take pleasure in the final week of this beautiful month.

Movies in the Park

Our first Movies in the Park event on May 30 is the perfect opportunity to frolic in spring’s nighttime air.   Events will begin at Heritage Park Soccer Field at 6p.m. with the movie beginning shortly after dark.  Bring picnic baskets, friends and a blanket for this night under the stars.  The first movie this season will take you on a wild ride to the center of the earth in this 3D version of the movie.  And of course, the 3D glasses will be provided.  Any guesses?  Join us to find out.  We promise you will not be disappointed!

Senior Games

Local seniors were fortunate enough to have that lovely May weather this past week during Clarksville Senior Games.  Seniors competed all over town in events such as horseshoes, shuffleboard, golf, basketball free throw, badminton, bowling, miniature golf and table tennis.  They finished out the week with a closing ceremony followed by a dinner and dance.

We want to congratulate all of this year’s winners and medal recipients.  We cannot wait to see you next year!  Parks and Recreation also plans to offer classes and events for seniors throughout the year.  So, stay tuned.

Kids on Crafts Spring Art Show

We would like to send a special thank to everyone who stopped by the Kids on Crafts Spring Art Show Friday to view the artwork these students have created this season.  Also, congratulations to the winners!  We hope to see everyone again when the program resumes in October.

Pools

As kids, we all looked forward to schools ending in and May.  Filled with anticipation, we could hardly wait for summer to begin… and the local pool to open.

Don’t let your children miss out on that same excitement.  Purchase your pool passes now, and get ready for city pools to open their doors on May 30.  Pool passes will be available at all three of the community centers until June 6 and at the Parks and Recreation Office all summer.

Downtown Market

The City of Clarksville’s first Downtown Market is still looking for vendors wishing to sell their homemade or homegrown items.  The Downtown Market is set to kick off on June 6 and will continue to take place every Saturday from 8a.m.-1p.m. on Public Square.

Items such as fresh cut flowers, potted plants, homegrown produce, art, handmade crafts and other goods can be sold at the market.

If you would like to participate as a vendor, please visit our website www.cityofclarksville.com.  You will find a printable copy of the market guidelines and a vendor application.  Fill it out and return it to the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Office.  Approved vendors can reserve 10 ft. by 10 ft. booths at no cost. Larger booths are available at a nominal fee. Vendors from outside Clarksville are also invited to participate.  For more information contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 645-7476.

Softball Leagues

Coaches for the Tuesday night church league softball and Thursday night women’s league softball teams may pick up their coaches’ packets at the Parks and Recreation office (104 Public Square) on May 29.  The church league games begin June 9, and women’s league begins June 4. 

Summer Youth Program gyms open on June 9 for six weeks of free summer fun for children ages 6-16. Locations include: Burt-Cobb Community Center, Crow Community Center, Kleeman Community Center, Barksdale, But, Glenellen, Hazelwood, Liberty, Minglewood, and St. Bethlehem Elementary Schools, Summit Heights and Caldwell Lane Housing Authority sites, and New Providence Outreach Center. Sites are open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except Caldwell Lane which is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The first Movies in the Park of this season will show on the big screen at Heritage Park Saturday, May 31. The Clarksville Jaycees have planned lots of fun pre-show activities for the Jaycees’ Kid Day events beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at dark. This month’s flick is about a little buzzing insect named Barry B. Benson. Movies in the Park is a free event and is great fun for the entire family.

The Eighth Annual TWRA and City of Clarksville Youth Fishing Rodeo will be held at the Fairgrounds Park duck pond on Saturday, June 7. This event is free and open to the public, and does not require a fishing license. Pre-registration forms are available at most sporting goods stores in the area. Registration starts at 7:15 a.m. The pond gets crowded quick so come early to claim your spot. The first round of fishing starts at 8:00 a.m. and lasts until 9:00 a.m. for ages 9 and under. Ages 10 to 16 get to fish from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. You are allowed one fishing pole per participant and sorry parents, you can’t fish, only assist in baiting, casting, or taking the fish off the hook.

In addition to tons of summer games and arts and crafts activities, children can take dance, karate, tennis and golf lessons or join the Roxy’s Summer Playhouse program (requires a $30 fee). Plus Fridays are free swim days and each child receives a free nutritious lunch daily. For more information, call the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department at 645-7476.

The Parks and Recreation office and all community centers will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Everyone have a safe holiday weekend and enjoy the sunshine!
