Adkisson, 58, an out-of-work truck driver charged with the killing of two people and the wounding of six others during a children’s musical at the church Sunday morning. Chris Lugo responds to that news and the issue of crime and gun control.

Many Tennesseans were stunned to hear the news that yesterday morning at 10:18 a.m. a lone gunman walked into a welcoming congregation in Knoxville and opened fire on the congregants who were gathered in anticipation of watching their children perform a scene from the musical “Annie” as part of the morning services, killing two people and shooting several more in the head before being tackled to the ground. That church, the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, is a beacon of joy and hope in East Tennessee. Its congregation is made up of some of the most loving, kind and gentle people in the fine city of Knoxville, and the horrific tragedy which was visited upon that church is a wakeup call to good people throughout Tennessee to re-examine our approach to gun control in Tennessee and throughout this nation.

Sadly this is not the first nor the last example of guns in churches, schools and public spaces being used to kill innocent men, women and children. In the past decade alone, dozens of people have been killed in our nations schools, churches and public gathering places by people who had obtained guns legally and illegally with the sole intention of killing unarmed civilians. The public school shooting rampage phenomenon started here in the South only a decade ago when two students in Jonesboro, Arkansas opened fire on their fellow middle school students killing five and wounding eleven. Since that time our nation has witnessed school shootings in over a dozen states with victims numbering in the hundreds. There have also been shootings at shopping malls and church shootings in the past year in Texas, Colorado and now Tennessee.

Unfortunately, in many of these cases, the guns that were used in the commission of felony first degree homicides were obtained legally. Either the guns were in possession of parents who were not able to keep the guns from the access of their children, or in some cases rifles were used. In many states there are no laws regarding the use of these weapons by minors. In other cases guns were obtained illegally. No matter how the gun was obtained, it was used in the commission of a crime against men, women and children who lost their parents, children or grandchildren as was the case today in Knoxville.

I cannot imagine the horror of the children yesterday watching as their parents were shot in front of them, but this incident further illustrates to me the need for effective gun control regulations at the federal level. The fact is that guns kill people and in the United States they kill a lot of people. The United States has the highest per capita murder rate in the developed world, with 14 people per 100,000 dying of gun violence each year. This adds up to nearly 10,000 people a year who die at the hands of a gun, not including the additional 16,000 suicides that happen each year with the use of a gun. This is nearly thirty three times the number of Americans who have been killed in Iraq since the beginning of the war.

The recent Supreme Court ruling on the second amendment by the Bush and Reagan stacked court insures that our nation’s cities can continue to live in perpetual fear of similar incidents happening around the nation as what happened in Knoxville on Sunday. Cities are already scrambling to deal with the chilling new reality handed down by the Supreme Court this summer, which seems to mean that it is open season for every crazy person who can get their hands on a gun in our nation’s urban centers.

There is a solution though, and it is up to Congress to exercise the political will to make a decision to pass laws which place strict limits on gun ownership and to hold gun sellers strictly accountable for who they sell their products to. We have a responsibility to protect our children and our nation’s citizens have a right to live free of the fear of being visited with violence as they go about their daily lives of working, shopping and worshiping as they choose. As a candidate for federal office I believe that federal government has the responsibility to place strict limits on gun ownership in this country. Gun rights advocates argue that guns make us safe, but I believe that a heavily armed nation is a dangerous place to live. It is time to make our country safe for our children. Now is the time for comprehensive gun control for a safer America.

Courtni Lee Nichols, 24, of 3060 Harris Circle, Palmyra, has been booked into Montgomery County Jail where she is being held without bond on first degree murder charges for negligence that led to the death of her child on Tuesday.

According to police reports, Nichols (pictured at right) left the child in the back seat of her car, which was parked outside Dodge’s Store shortly after 10 a.m.. Nichols reportedly went in and out of the Yes Deer Bar several times and went to another bar with friends, leaving her child alone in the vehicle. Six hours later EMS and police responding to a 911 call found the baby “unresponsive,” rushed the child to Gateway Medical Center, where the infant was pronounced dead, according the arrest report written by Detective Tim Anderson. The child’s temperature was 103.8 degrees. Courtni Nichols admitted leaving her baby in the car, which was not running or air-conditioned, while she went bar-hopping.

According to state law, a murder charge may be applied in the case of a death committed in the context of “aggravated child abuse or neglect.”

It is against state law (Class B misdemeanor) to leave a child under age seven alone in a vehicle without another person at least thirteen years of age to supervise, or if the vehicle is running or the keys are inside the car. To leave a child unattended in a car can result in child abuse/neglect charges for any child under the age of 18. Nichols’ prior record includes pending charges including driving under the influence, multiple charges of driving after her license was revoked, driving an uninsured vehicle, and additional traffic charges.

The next time someone tells you that giving up some your freedoms is the price we must pay for security, tell them to watch this 1998 movie and then get back to you! Often the refrain is innocent people have no reason to fear unbridled questioning or surveillance by the government. Enemy of the State, a well executed action thriller, goes a long way to turn that notion on its proverbial head.

An innocent man, unaware he has been drawn into a covert operation, doesn’t surrender his freedom. It’s taken from him and not in a nice way! Robert Clayton Dean, played by Will Smith, is a successful D.C. labor lawyer, has a lovely ACLU lawyer wife, Carla, played by Regina King, and is quite happy with his life. Carla is fearful of the government’s electronic surveillance abilities. Robert thinks she’s overreacting.

As the film opens, Jon Voight plays Thomas Reynolds, a high level NSA director, who has overplayed his hand and needs to cover up his mistake. Separately, Dean has a tense encounter with a mob boss figure, played by Tom Sizemore. A chance encounter with a former college chum turns Dean’s comfortable life upside-down. Dean’s law career and marriage are trashed, his finances dry up and he’s none the wiser of the forces that have been marshaled against him.

Lisa Bonet is Dean’s former girlfriend, Rachel, who also caught up in his downturn spiral, puts him in contact with Brill, played by Gene Hackman. From this point on, Robert Dean begins to see that he is caught up in someone else’s web. Hotel chase scenes, balcony climbing and jumping, satellite intercepts and surveillance are all on display. The ease and adeptness of government agents to violate privacy and personal liberties is shown to frightening detail. Loren Dean, Scott Cann, Jake Bussey, Seth Green, Gabriel Byrne and Jack Black all have supporting roles as the electronics bad guys. They have no qualms about what they do to Dean’s life or the others they dispatch so readily.

Gene Hackman’s Brill and Will Smith’s Dean come to together to defeat the efforts of the NSA team and recover their own lives and extract justice for the wronged deaths in their wake. Being chased in Washington D.C. tunnels, down railroad tracks, dodging helicopters and bullets and a very noisily exploding building, good guys Brill and Dean begin to turn the tables and bring our overzealous government boys into accountability for their actions and violations of the law.

In the end, the bad guys are made to pay and the good guys have their sane, if not so innocent, lives again. Justice extracts its pound of flesh. The viewer is left with the admonition that safeguarding your liberties is not to be sacrificed to qualms about security. Truly, without safeguarded liberty, there is no security. Enjoy the thrill ride. Add Enemy of the State to your DVD collection.

How many times has a film tried to tell the story of an ex-felon trying to go straight? Well, here is one that does the job and does it well. Even in another language, no less! Manuel Boursinhac’s La Mentale, original title in French, known as The Code is a wonderful telling of a crime story. If you liked The French Connection, Once Upon A Time In America, The Godfather, you’ll enjoy this DVD.

This film is in French with English subtitles, but that does not detract from the success of the storytelling. And it gets better. The actors portray an unusual set of characters: Persians and gypsies living in France and engaging in criminal enterprises. There is a reference to the undercurrent of unrest and racial prejudice that erupted last summer in parts of France’s immigrant community. There’s a rivalry between established French gangsters. There’s a younger brother wanting to be a part of the big boys action and resenting that older brother’s shadow is blocking his advancement. Or so he thinks. And somebody wants to settle a score.

Dris, a Persian, is the main character and it’ss his struggle to come to terms with his old life and his new one that drive the film. He wants to go straight- but, as he yells his wife Lise, “It’s hard!” He doesn’t want to see his younger brother follow in his dark footsteps, but Yanis, his old partner in crime, is hellbent on having him back in the gang. And he pulls every trick at his disposal to achieve this end, including using Dris’ old gypsy girlfriend.

Dris keeps avoiding the bait. He nibbles here and there, but he never takes that full bite that would set the hook. That is until…, well for that you have to watch the movie yourself. Yanis keeps pushing Dris about a big upcoming job, but fails to tell him of some other developments which darken the horizon. And of course, the promised perfect job has a unexpected downside. And then there’s that score, a vendetta, to be settled. Younger brother Mel’s ambitions have placed him in a bad spot and big brother Dris tries to extricate him.

Deceptions, betrayals, vendettas, murder, heists, guns, regret– it’s all here and well played out. A French crime story, true. A great crime story, even more so. Starring Samuel Le Bihan, Samy Naceri. Get this film.

The grand jury has indicted two people in the shootout that resulted in the accidental death of former Northwest High School basketball coach Willard Ross. The two men were arrested and racked with several charges each. Jovan Preche Dixon, a 27-year-old man who gave an address of 267 Millstone Circle, and Jeremy Andrea Jarvis, a 19-year-old man who listed his address as 211 Oak Street, have both been arrested.

A press release from the Clarksville Police department indicates that both men were arrested “in connection” with the shooting incident that resulted in the death of the beloved high school coach. Ward 2 City Councilwoman Deanna McLaughlin said that the hard work [of the police department] has paid off. “It has been suggested that this incident was gang related,” she said in an email, “It was NOT gang related.”

McLaughlin said she was limited on what she could share but was confident in her statement.

The specific charges are as followed: Dixon was charged with attempted first degree murder, felony murder, reckless endangerment, and unlawfully carrying a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $1.3 Million.

Jarvis was charged with attempted first degree murder, premeditated murder, felony murder, reckless endangerment, and unlawfully carrying a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $1 Million. All further questions have been deferred to the District Attorney’s office.

Ross was working in his fireworks tent in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Fort Campbell Boulevard when he was shot. He later died at Gateway Medical Center.

We will provide more information as it surfaces.

This is a new venture for me. Reviewing feature DVDs for home collections, that is. With the steady steam of DVD releases, titles can be become blurred. Two releases that are not to be missed are Blood Diamond and The Departed. If you have not seen either film in the theater, you’ve actually done yourself a favor as you’ll be engrossed with what flows onto your TV screen. Both offerings deliver the goods

Blood Diamond is a strong, captivating epic of a movie. Djimon Houson (Amistad) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic and The Basketball Diaries) give outstanding performances that compel your attention and your commitment to the story. Djimon is a father separated from his family by internal strife in Sierra Leone, Africa. He struggles to reunite his family and reclaim his son who has been abducted into the child soldier ranks of the rebels terrorizing the countryside. You feel his anguish and share his determination to succeed.

DiCaprio stuns as a fully grown adult, a seasoned veteran of the apartheid warfare of South Africa. His physical appearance is a complete break from any teen idol images you may hold from his past. This is a grown man with a life’s burden weight on his shoulders now engaged as a smuggler.

Both characters are linked by a rare diamond and the pursuit to own it and escape the turmoil around them. I’ll not give away too much of the story but this is one movie which is sure to leave you sitting back in your seat, exhausted. It holds up quite well under repeated viewings. Get this one and prepare to be enthralled.

The Departed is another engaging movie now out on DVD. Here, DiCaprio teams with Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson , Martin Sheen and Mark Walberg to take you on a trip inside the wiseguy politics of Boston. And what a wild, cat-and-mouse trip it is! The anti-organized crime unit have an operative infiltrate the bad guys and the bad guys have their own operative inside the anti-organized crime unit.

Each group becomes aware of the other’s infiltration and the chase is on to uncover the other’s infiltrator first. This makes for a very intense journey for each infiltrator.

Each betrayor is stunningly defined and revealed to the audience and you are drenched in the drama of this well crafted wiseguy expose. The ending will surprise and maybe even anger you. But it fits well. Nicholson is totally engrossing as the mob leader plying his trade. Damon and DiCaprio dance around each other with finesse and cunning, always staying just one step ahead of the other. You’ll want to watch this more than once. This is another highly recommended addition to your DVD collection.
