Fort Campbell Soldiers put Female Body Armor Prototypes through paces

Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan – Last summer, prototypes for new female body armor was distributed to select female 101st Airborne Division Soldiers at Fort Campbell, KY, for field-testing during an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

Gender-specific body armor has been, in many ways, a long time coming. Military clothing classically comes in two sizes: too big or too small. While this may be workable for garrison duty uniforms, it isn’t acceptable for protective gear.

Fort Campbell’s 1st Brigade Combat Team along with Afghan Border Police deliver Supplies to Local School

Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan – The Zone 1 Afghan Border Police along with 2nd Brigade Afghan National Civil Order Police delivered school supplies to hundreds of students as part of a community outreach mission, May 25th, at a school in western Jalalabad.

U.S. Army Soldiers with ABP Zone 1 Security Forces Advise and Assistance Team, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division assisted their Afghan National Security Forces counterparts by providing security and help hand out supplies.

Fort Campbell Soldiers observe Air Assault, the Afghan way

Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan – Dozens of Afghan National Army soldiers, Afghan Uniformed Police, and a smattering of U.S. Army Soldiers serving as mission advisors sat by their heavy packs on the gravel, talking and laughing in quiet anticipation, waiting for a sound.

After several hours of checks and double-checks, roll calls and final updates from the command center, the punchy staccato of rotors came faintly in the distance. Louder and louder the noise sounded, until the reverberations deafened and the dusty prop-wash buffeted those waiting at the landing zone for the choppers.

Fort Campbell’s 1st Brigade Combat Team Bulldogs assist ANSF to secure Wazir Valley

Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, recently completed a five day mission, titled OQUAAB XI, with their Afghan National Security Forces partners March 27th–31st, in the Wazir Valley of the Khogyani District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

OQUAAB, which is Pashtu for Eagle, was a combined operation consisting of ANSF forces from the Afghan National Army, Afghan Uniformed Police, Afghan Border Police, Afghan Local Police and Coalition Forces.

Fort Campbell’s 1st Brigade Combat Team Soldiers get visit from U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel

Forward Operating Base Fenty, Afghanistan – Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Chuck Hagel, visited the U.S. Army Soldiers of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, March 9th.

Hagel and his team landed at Forward Operating Base Fenty in a U.S. Air Force C-130 and were given a briefing by the command team of 1st BCT about the status of operations in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces in Afghanistan.

After the briefing, Hagel made his way to the entrance of the FOB where he addressed Combined Team Bastogne Soldiers.

Forward Operating Base Fenty, Afghanistan – Trying to teach a room full of Poshtu speaking children English can be difficult for some, but for U.S. Army Spc. Gamei Kwong, a native of Hamtramck, MI, it’s a labor of love.

Kwong joined the Army in 2009 as a civil affairs specialist with her first and current unit the 414th Civil Affairs Battalion, is on her first deployment at Forward Operating Base Finley-Shields, Afghanistan, with Provincial Reconstruction Team Nangarhar, attached to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan – For Spc. Jennifer Benevente, an avionics repair specialist with D Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, serving in the military is something that has been in her family.

Even with a family history of military service, it was a series of events that nudged her toward the military.

101st Combat Aviation Soldiers Rebuild one gate at a time

Forward Operating Base Fenty, Afghanistan – On the morning of December 2nd, 2012, insurgents detonated a truck laden with explosives next to Forward Operating Base Fenty in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, and detonated it.

A two-hour battle followed and the insurgents were defeated by the cooperation of coalition and Afghan forces. The insurgents were defeated, but a gate was destroyed as a result of the battle.

Three Fort Campbell Soldiers receive medals for Valor

Fort Campbell, KY – Three Currahees from 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, were awarded Army Commendation Medals for Valor, during a ceremony January 23rd, 2012, at Fort Campbell, KY.

“The great thing about today is we’re recognizing three soldiers who are mentally and physically tough, they’re masters of their craft, and they have proven themselves under fire,” said U.S. Army Col. Valery C. Keaveny Jr., the commander of the 4th BCT, 101st Airborne Division.
