Austin Peay Governors Basketball opens season with Samford at home Friday night

Austin Peay vs. Samford

November 9th, 2012 | Dave Aaron Arena | Clarksville, TN

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – It has been a rare occasion Austin Peay men’s basketball team has opened at home, at least under head coach Dave Loos.

In fact, Friday’s 7:00pm, season opener against Samford in Dave Aaron Arena is only the fifth time in Loos’ 23 season the Governors have opened a season at home. It has been since the 2003-04 season the Governors (Knoxville College) have played at home. It has been since the 1995-96 season since the Govs played a Division I team (Northern Illinois) at home to open the season. Normally the Govs are paying the bills through guarantee games or related tournaments.

The Final Horne: with James D. HorneClarksville, TN – Except for the hardcore fans of the teams that have been knocked out, and despite an atypical-boring and injury-changed first round, most pundits and casual NBA fans hoped for the NBA Finals match up that we have between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder that gets started Tuesday night in Oklahoma City, OK on ABC.

We all know the stories of the two teams.

The Final Horne: Is Jeremy Lin Sanity fever going to be cured by return of Carmelo Anthony?

Clarksville, TN – You love him. I love him.

We all love the story of Knicks sensation and point guard Jeremy Lin, the almost three-time NBA cast-offed, undrafted and two-time Ivy Leaguer from Harvard.

The Palo Alto, California, native is the All-American story: Down to his last chance, Lin excelled and exceeded expectations and did has done it all for the team on the biggest stage in the city of 8 million stories, the grand land, ‘if you can make it there you can make it any where’, New York City.

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay certainly hasn’t gotten to the point of hitting the panic button, but the Governors are in an unaccustomed spot heading down the regular-season stretch.

Historically, Austin Peay peaks in February. Since the mid-1990s the Govs have captured nearly 70 percent of their games in Feburary-March. The Govs find themselves entering Wednesday’s 7:00pm game with Morehead State already owning a 0-3 February record.

Tailgating: Marc Gasol escapes from brother’s shadow, arrives as elite NBA big man with All-Star selection

Clarksville, TN – For much of his life, Marc Gasol has seemingly lived in the shadows.

Already growing up in the shadow of his older Pau Gasol, who starred for Spanish basketball powerhouse Barcelona, Marc continued to remain the forgotten Gasol when Pau was taken in the 2001 NBA Draft and shipped to the Memphis Grizzlies.

After the Gasol family made the move to Memphis to stay close to Pau, Marc continued to search for his own basketball glory.

The Final Horne: In the end Kobe won the war with Shaq

Clarksville, TN – I was on Shaquille Rashaun O’Neal’s side during the epic and legendary Shaq-Kobe Bryant Wars that were waged earlier this century. The pair formed the greatest duo the NBA had had seen since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were leading the Bulls to six championships in subsequent three-peats in the early and then late 1990′s or certainly since Hulk Hogan and the ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage formed the then WWF’s famed ‘Mega Powers’ tag team in the late 1980′s.

Being apart of Shaq’s Army was cool. And why wouldn’t it be when you’ve got a 7-foot-1, 325-pound general leading the way. No one doubts Shaq is the most dominate center of our time and is hard to argue that he may be the greatest center to ever play the position. «Read the rest of this article»
