Daniel Lee Stevens Jr.

Nia Association announced the awarding of the first annual Daniel Stevens Youth Build Scholarship Award, to the Tabernacle Christian School (TCS).  Daniel Stevens was the Co-founder of Nia, and a staunch advocate of youth achievement. Mr. Stevens taught youth in varying capacities for over 24 years, after retiring from the US Army.

His last public school period of instruction was at TCS where he was invited by Principal Katobwa Stallworth to teach students about the American Flag, its value, its meaning, its colors, how to hoist and retire the colors, and how it is to be folded and stored. It is befitting that this first award be given to benefit a student who merits financial support and exhibits strong potential to excel. At the 2009 TCS graduation ceremonies, Mr. Stevens’ youngest granddaughter, Kampbell Mack, a Pre-K 4 student, boldly and proudly exclaimed the TCS mantra, “If Excellence is a Possibility, then Good is Not Good Enough!”

The Kids at Tabernacle Christian School exemplify the ideals of this award, as made evident by the many sucessful graduates from the school.

Some like Barbara Lucas had been looking for work (in the legal field) for over 6 months. She is currently considering returning to school. Jonathan Ligon said he was laid off 5 months ago, since then he has been unsuccessfully looking for work as a welder.  Beverly Cossingham unemployed for five months, is looking for an administrative or clerical positions. However, Katie Nolan probably summed it up best.  “I am looking for anything at this point, anything”, she said.

With the recent economic downtown, layoffs have become an all too common occurrence across middle Tennessee. A good example of this is the Springhill, TN GM plant which made the Chevrolet Traverse that will halt production in November laying off another 2,447 employees.

At the Clarksville Career Center booth they were handing out the listing of available jobs to the job seekers. Wendy Harrison took a minute to speak to us. Things are picking up she said, “The job market is still down, but it’s getting better”.

Vickie Kloeman, the Administrator of Elections for the Montgomery County Election Commission, was on hand to register people to vote but as she noted, “attendees seemed more interested in jobs, then voting right now”. However, she had signed up eight people to vote. “That’s eight more than we had on the rolls this morning” she said.

Tables and chairs are available for employers to set up their booths. Arrival time is between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. for set up.

The college will also be providing a complimentary breakfast for all employers prior to 10:00 a.m. they will continue to  provide refreshments throughout the day, a catered lunch and hourly door prizes!

Daniel Lee Stevens Jr. 1942 - 2008

Daniel Lee Stevens Jr., 66, a prominent football coach for North West High School, a Retired Sergeant Major and Deacon at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, passed away recently.

Daniel Stevens and his wife Carol are the Founders of NIA Association here in Clarksville. NIA is a premier non-profit that provides around-the clock holistic human services for the disabled, health-care employment opportunities and affordable housing for low to moderate income individuals and families.

Calling hours for Deacon Stevens will be Tuesday, December 2, at Foston Funeral Home, 816 Franklin Street, Clarksville, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Members of his family will be present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services for Deacon Stevens will be on Wednesday, December 3, starting at 11:00 a.m., at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, 900 Tiny Town Rd., Clarksville.
