Fright on Franklin Street

This year’s first ever Fright on Franklin is set to take place Saturday, October 31 in Downtown Clarksville. The family friendly Halloween event is for adults and kids of all ages and provides activities such as costume contests, pumpkin carving contests and trick-or-treating.

Festivities begin at 4p.m. Local businesses will have booths along Franklin Street from 4-7p.m. where kids can trick-or-treat safely with the supervision of their parents.

Costume contests begin at 5p.m. Costumes will be judged in several age categories including Babies, Toddlers, Kids ages 5-8, Pre-teens ages 9-12, Teens ages 13-17, Adults ages 18-54, Seniors ages 55 & up and Dogs. All costumes should be in good taste and appropriate for a family event.

Among other activities, is the Pumpkin Carving and Painting Contest. Adults and children are invited to attend the Downtown Market on Saturday, October 24 where they may purchase and decorate pumpkins to enter into the contest. The carved and painted pumpkins will be displayed throughout Franklin Street businesses where they will be judged. The Carving and Painting contest is divided into several categories: Painting for ages 1-3, Painting for ages 4-6, carving for ages 7-9, carving for ages 10-13, carving for ages 14-17, carving for ages 18-54 and carving for ages 55 and up.

If you want it done right: Do It Yourself

Does he really know what he's doing?

I”m a former HGTV junkie. I used to sit and watch hours of it, and I absorbed more interior decorating, real estate, and DIY than I could possibly use in a lifetime. I would probably still be that way, but my current occupations as mommy, taxi, nurse, teacher, finance manager, counselor, cook, maid, and of course, writer, do not leave much of an opportunity for television.

But if there was one thing I learned from my HGTV education, it’s that preparation is key when doing any type of project. I’ve put this principle into practive with every job I have done and have always had great results. Whether it is painting a bookshelf or completely gutting a bathroom, you have to start out the right way.

I wish someone had told that to the handyman I hired a couple of weeks ago to paint my kitchen buffet. As the  DIY mommy, I prefer to do things myself, but for this particular project I was pressed for time and wanted it done before my husband returned from a business trip. So, I found two local “experienced” handymen who came complete with referrals to tackle the simple task of painting a hutch along with a few other small things around my house. Sounds great, right?

APSU Community School of the Arts announces classes for fall 2009

The Community School of the Arts at Austin Peay State University announces music, art and dance classes for children and adults for Fall 2009. Registration opens on Monday, Aug. 3rd. Most classes start Aug. 31 and continue through Dec. 12. New students may continue to enroll after the start date. Community School of the Arts announces summer session programs

The summer session will begin June 1 and end July 10. Programs will be offered in both music and visual arts.

The music program will feature Individual Music Instruction, Class Voice and Drum Circle; also scheduled is the annual APSU Piano Week, June 15-19.

All music programs are scheduled in the Music/Mass Communication Building.

Community School of the Arts lists Spring class schedule

Austin Peay State University announces the schedule of classes for the Spring 2009 Community School of the Arts.

The Community School of the Arts teaches a variety of music and visual arts classes to children and adults. The spring term begins Tuesday, Jan. 20 and ends on Saturday, May 2.

The dates for preregistration for returning students is Nov. 24 – Dec. 5. Open registration for new students begins Dec. 8. All classes begin during the week of Jan. 20 unless otherwise stated in the class description. Late registration will be accepted.

Music classes are scheduled to take place in the Music/Mass Communication Building on APSU’s main campus. Available classes are listed below along with course descriptions.

INDIVIDUAL MUSIC LESSONS give students one-on-one instruction for 30 minutes each week on the bassoon, cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, horn, oboe, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, tuba/euphonium, violin/fiddle or voice.  Lessons take place weekday afternoons and evenings. ‘Frolic on Franklin’ celebrates music, dance, theatre and the arts

On September 20th, the 100 block of Franklin Street will come alive with music, dance, theatre and art. This marks the Second Annual Frolic on Franklin: A Celebration of the Arts. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Franklin Street will be teaming with artists displaying and selling their creations. They will be sharing the event with performing artists, bands, singers, dancers, players. In all, the Frlic will host  twenty-five booths and more than 50 artists.

The Frolic on Franklin: A Celebration of the Arts, a portion of the festival, is free and open to the public. The artists will display and sell their work, including art, jewelry, wood crafts, pottery and more. In addition, a minimum of five demonstrations including pottery, wood working/turning, a letterpress and painting, will be showcased, offering parents and children alike the opportunity to watch and learn. Interactive opportunities for the children will be made through activities such as sidewalk chalk and face painting.

This event was conceived by the Downtown Clarksville Association (DCA) members to bring arts to the streets on the same day The Roxy Regional Theatre hosts its annual Gala. «Read the rest of this article»
